5.0 out of 5 stars TIGHT!
This is such a sic CD! Aaron does not have an annoying whiney voice as i have read in some of the reviews. He is a very good singer. This is one of the best new metal/hard rock bands around. This CD is easily up there with SLIPKNOT for best CD of '99. The guitars are pounding, the bass is thumping, and the drums are brutal. I saw them live at FAMILY VALUES and they...

3.0 out of 5 stars Back in the day...
I just listened to this cd for the first time in a long, long time. What can I say, it's alright. Too damn mopey, and it's really pretty goddamn embarassing that I really identified with this album like 4 1/2 years ago. Still, this is some pretty decent stuff, though it probably wouldn't be worth owning if it weren't for 'Mudshovel', but that song still does friggin...

I saw them live at FAMILY VALUES and they were the ones who made the concert worth the $35.00 ticket. Here are my individual ratings for each of the songs:

1. Suffocate-5/5 Great opener to the CD.

2. Just Go- 4/5 Good follow up to Suffocate, was the first single of DYSFUNCTION.

3. Me- 3/5 Song really doesn't fit...too soft

4. Raw- 5/5 awesome song second hardest on the CD really gets you going after ME

5. Mudshovel- 5/5 Song that got them popular, but it still is a cool song, love the bass intro.

6. Home- 4/5 Good Song but again they get softer.

7. A Flat- 5/5 again good song to get the listener goin again.

8. Crawl- 6/5 BEST/HARDEST/MOST ENERGIZING song on the CD. the bridge in this song is awesome.

9. Spleen- 5/5 Great closer to the CD. Another hard song. THERE IS ALSO A HIDDEN SONG ABOUT EIGHT MINUTES AFTER THIS ONE IS OVER.

Another thing if STAIND ever comes to your town, go see them live! They are SOOOOOOO kick a** in concert. You won't regret seeing them. BUY THIS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise Surprise, May 5, 2000
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Someone recommended Staind to me saying they're like KoRn. Though I like KoRn, I didn't care because I don't listen to metal all that much, but I decided to try something new, so here I am. I'm really impressed with the purchase. Staind, while owing to KoRn somewhat, are more like our (well, mine anyways) fallen Seattle heros, especially Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. For the 13-year-olds, that's a very high praise (and if you like KoRn and Staind, you'll love those two). Instead of the usual loud racket, bad attitude, talentless metal bands (that's why I rarely listen to it), Staind are very thoughtful. Some very smart lyrics, amazing musicians, topped off with a smooth flow, and you have "Dysfunction". Don't worry though, if it's hard rock you want, you've come to the right place. Mike Mushok can deliver very crunchy riffs with a sense of melody, not catchy, but it will keep the listener tuned. He's a very good guitarist and he should be one to look out for in the future. Thankfully, the rest of the band members are just as talented. Johnny April is just as good as Mike, Jon Wysocki is an amazing drummer and Aaron Lewis has a very beautiful voice, very deep like Eddie Vedder's but just as crystal clear. But what's a band without any good songs? Staind have plenty, even though you only get ten (secret song at the end), these ten songs will keep those who listen very happy. "Suffocate" is a great opener, couldn't have had a better one. "Just Go", "Mudshovel" and "Home" are the singles, I love them too. "Me" is a really beautiful song that may not find a place with metal heads because of it's slow pace, no matter, their loss. "Raw", "A Flat", "Crawl" and "Spleen" are very heavy songs, and they rock, I love them too. The secret song is an acoustic song, if you hated "Me" for it's slow pace don't bother, but it's really a touching amongst the heavy tunes. You should at least here it once. So there you go, a very solid CD that I normally wouldn't have bought but I'm glad I did. If you want something heavy, but not too heavy, I can't recommend this enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best rock cd ever, hands down., August 21, 2000

Anthony (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Alright, let me just say i first heard of Staind when i saw them on the family values 99 tour here in san antonio. at that time i was not much into rock, but i thought that they rocked it. now they are my favorite band.

This is really Staind's second album, which they really matured on. this cd offers something for everyone, unless you are like me and love every song. The singer Aaron Lewis shares everything with his audience. His singing is strait from the heart, and that makes the best music. See him live and watch how he preforms, he is close to tears. He can truly "sing" as shown in songs like Home, Just Go, and Me. He also gets mad on tracks like Raw and Spleen. I can really relate to him, and numereous times this cd has brought me to tears.

The music is unbelievable. Lead by hard heavy guitars thanks to Mike Mushok who is amazing. Bassist Jonny April also very talented. Drummer Jon Wysocki (is that right?) can pound the drum set with impeccable timing along with Aarons vocals.

When i need to "let it all out" i sing along with the whole cd. when i am working out i listen to the cd. i listen to it in the car. it is always a good time for Staind.

If you havent heard Home, Mudshovel, or Just Go on the radio, you must check this album out. If you have heard these on the radio, there is plenty more on the album. If you didnt really like what you heard on the radio, all the songs are not like that. Just listen to it at a local music store.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Issues, December 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Amazing 'cause no one really sounds like them. This isn't rap/metal,this is hard rock or alt/metal that leans towards the metal side more often than not, despite the occasional hip-hop beats. The only reason I say alternative because of the hidden track, which is called "Black Rain" if i'm not mistaken, which is acoustic. The band is amazing with some serious talent. The guitars are great,"Raw",and the bass is too like in "Mudshovel" both Mike and Johnny should be proud.Jon does an excellent job on this album mixing heavy metal-type drumming with furious hip-hop beats that I love.Aaron Lewis though has to be heard. His vocals are like Eddie Vedder and lyrics are some of the best i've heard in a long, long time. The lyrics are thought provoking and are way better then you think. "Just Go" is the perfect example of this bands talent and Aaron's ability to come up with moving lyrics. The first five songs are easily the best and way better then any thing i've heard in a very long time."Suffocate" and "Raw" totally rock."Just Go" and "Mudshovel" are the two amazing singles."Me" is kinda slow but I love it and Aaron's voice sounds so hurt. The rest range from good to great "A Flat" being the best. The hidden track is the best song on the album 'cause it's so emotional and hauntingly beautiful. It reminds me of Nirvana's "Something In The Way".Both songs have production problems,Kurt used a broken guitar and Aaron's voice sounds like he was in a hallway, but both are touching, brilliant, and show undeniable talent. Please give this a try, you'll love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dysfunction...the epitome of rock fusion, December 11, 1999
By
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Take the vocal talents of Steve Weiland (STP), Layne Staley (Alice in Chains),and Kurt Cobain(duh), mix them all together, add a little bit of Bizkit, (musically not lyrically) a couple of well placed Jonathan Davis growls and you have one of the most uniquely original bands to date...STAIND. For those of you who think this is Korn lite you are horribly wrong. Most of those people are the ones that didn't like this ablum simply because they're looking for the wrong type of music. Staind fuses the sounds of good old days of grunge vocals with modern crunchy guitars to produce something completely different than what you expect. By listening to thier first single "Mudshovel" I am amazed at how many peole miss the fact that the lead singer sings a melody similar to the way Kurt sung "In Bloom". On other tracks, such as "Me", the guitars whine and sway like the once great Alice in Chains while the INTENSE lyrical subject matter let you know that this ain't yer daddy's music! Most times, the lyrics on Dysfunction are leaps and bounds more thought out and poetic than most Korn lyrics I've heard(issues excluded). The lyrics are very introspective at times and are well written reminicent of "Dirt" by Alice in Chains. For these reasons Dysfunction is simply in a class by itself. Because Staind uses the best elements of some of the greatest modern rock bands they can't really be put into the same class as Korn & Bizkit. All in all when you purchase this ablum don't look for a Korn or Bizkit sound alike. Look for soul searching lyrics, Groovin riffs and a great vocalist. Everything else will fall in to place and you will see what I mean. 4 starz cuz there is ALWAYs room for improvement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy, Meaningful Music, August 18, 2000
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Not just another KoRn clone, Staind holds their own in a world full of hip-hop infulences. These guys have the ability to play some incredibly heavy music, as shown on tracks like "Raw" and "Crawl", but Staind also has incredible depth in their music, shown in tracks like "Me" and "Just Go". The best comparison that I can make between Staind and another band would have to be Sevendust (another great metal band). Aaron Lewis is the most passionate lead singer that I have ever come across, and John Wysocki is one of today's best drummers. Need proof? Just listen to "Spleen", which includes a spectacular drum solo in the intro (which is accomodated by Mike Mushok's creepy guitar riffs). A run-down of the tracks on a scale on 1 to 5.... 1. Suffocate-Awesome opener, a heavier track, but can seem out of sync at time (but who really wants to be NSYNC HAHAHAHA! Whoo I had to let that out) (4/5) 2. Just Go-I didn't really like this track the first time I heard it, but it grew on me, great songwriting on this one (4/5) 3. Me-Excellent song full of depth. Makes you want to cry when you hear it (4.5/5) 4. Raw-Heaviest song on Dysfunction, sounds alot like a Sevendust B-Side, great growling by Lewis (4.5/5) 5. Mudshovel-One of the singles, this track has a great bass line and chorus (4.5/5) 6. Home-My favorite track on the album. The music is heavy on depth and vocals, and Lewis' voice is great for the song (5/5) 7. A Flat-Don't care much for this song, but good anyway (3/5) 8. Crawl-Also on the Scream 3 Soundtrack, this is another great heavy song, guitars sound a little electronically mixed on this track though (4/5) 9. Spleen-Great heavy song, as I said before, drum solo at the beginning is spectacular and Mushok's guitar playing capabilities shine on this song (4.5/5) Overall, a worthy heavy metal release, but it could use some fine tuning. Fans of Sevendust, Deftones, Metallica, or any hard music should pick this up right away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Staind's "Dysfunction" Symbolizes Self-Expression In Metal, August 2, 2001
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Staind's 1999 album "Dysfunction" is not your typical CD, and Staind is not your typical band. The lyrics in the album showed me a whole new side of life, its Dark side. Its singles "Mudshovel", "Just Go", and "Home" are good examples of how life works. The singer, Aaron Lewis, sings about his life, which can be very depressing. He also tells you that he has made some mistakes in life. With the powerful lyrics, heavy guitar riffs, and creative and powerful drum beats, Staind makes this album well worth it. Now, I'm not saying this album is for everyone, many of my friends that I have talked to have said that this album is TOO heavy or TOO depressing in parts. I like to think of this album as one thing, a warning telling you this is NOT the last time you will hear about Staind.

Although this CD only has 9 listed tracks (there is a secret acoustic track about 15 minutes after the end of track 9, Spleen) all 9 tracks are very well thought out and played very well. It's clearly obvious that Staind put a lot of effort into writing this album.

Their 1st album, "Tormented", is hard and heavy, with the screaming voice of Aaron Lewis singing about this world and his life. Their new album, "Break The Cycle", has its depressing parts and its "cheerful" parts.

I thought this album was one of the most amazing albums I have ever heard in my life. This album moved me very much. I liked this album because it told me about how other people live in life, and even though I have it made, others do not, such as Aaron Lewis. This album, to me, stood out from all the other CD's I have listened to. Its a very expressing album and a very well-put together album. This album symbolizes self-expression in heavy metal. I recommend this album to anyone to feels depressed, to let them know that they are not the only ones feeling this way, and to people who enjoy quality heavy metal on an amazing album. Like I said earlier, this is NOT the last time you will hear from Staind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best rock cd out there to date, April 12, 2000
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
When I got Staind, I was looking for a Limp Bizkit/Static X/Slipknot/KoRn type of band. However, Staind is a bit more reserved and less in your face. Although the cd does include some, a lot of the cd is more mellow type of rock such as songs like "Home" and "Addict". You can just as easily mosh to songs such as "Mudshovel" and "Suffocate." Please endorse bands like this because there aren't a lot of others like it. It's heavy and yet, refined. The perfect combination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Staind no longer Tormented, December 9, 1999

This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
I have both Staind albums, Tormented and Dysfunction. I must say, there is really no comparisan. Dysfunction is more mature, lyrically brilliant, and all-around a better album. From the start of the first track to the last note on the hidden track, this album rocks and then some. One of the best albums out there right now. A must for any hard-music loving fan!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sophmore Effort, November 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
This CD is straight from the text book of groove oriented rock. The next phase in the Helmet esque guitar arena. Melodic guitars and raw emotion make this a very disturbing yet a must have for your cd collection. The guitar parts are structured in an ever so brilliant manner. Coupled with the melodies and the lyrical content, this cd will take you on a trip to the darkest places in your mind. No doubt, a band that can rock and will be around for a long time.
