Funktions Well,
By Cuzz (Where Real Music Lives) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dysfunktional Family (Audio CD)
Now this is a good soundtrack for those that enjoy gangsta rap primarily westcoast brand. I have been a fan of Death Row/Tha Row since it's inception and i was really curious to see what they had to offer now that seem to have landed on their feet again. For awhile Death Row had just tried to replace several artists they lost with talented but obvious knockoff's like Bad Azz with Swoop G, Snoop Doggy Dogg with YGD Top Dogg, Lady Of Rage with SKG, & most noteably 2Pac with Tha Realest but that was from 1999-2001 abouts and now in 2003 they have an intire new roster with fresh new production. Tha Row comes with female rappers Virginya Slim & Gail Gotti (a bit like a female Kurupt), a hard tongue twisting at times lyracist in Crooked I, a veteran in Kurupt Young Gotti of Tha Dogg Pound, a great talented RnB singer in Danny Boy & some other fresh hungry unique MC's in that of Spider Loc & Eastwood. Now all these make for a promissing album but also the fact that they have their own producers being Tha Row Hittas with their own production style headlining it being the multi talented Darren Vegas. Now onto the music i'll drop what the sound track gives you song wise in highlights and disappointments.Still Tha Row w/Crooked I & Virginya Slim - this is a good opening track it has a whiney westcoastish beat that is very loud and bass heavy. There is a sort of admirable low-fi quality to this joint. Crooked I lays down some good lyrics letting everyone know Death Row is back and discusses soem of the things the record company has gone through and Virginya Slim's part does get a bit anoying and that's the only problem with the song cuz she serves no real purpose, this beat was remixed and it is alot better than the original in my book. I'm Back [Remix] w/Kurupt - those of you itching for a brand new jaw dropping Kurupt Tha Kingpin track will be disappointed. The beat sounds a tad like his dungeon freestyle with Canibus but less banging and with less lyrical ability than he shows in the freestyle. The lyrics are laughable in parts and the only thing that saves the song is Kurupt does kick it up a nitch lyrically near the end, I'm still waiting for him to rip tracks up like he once did. Dysfunktional Family (Theme) w/Crooked I, Eastwood & Danny Boy - this is the albums true highlight. It shows Death Row's new talent working perfectly to create great music as they did back in the day on a nice posse cut. Crooked I, Danny Boy & Eastwood all drop great verses about the troubles of broken families and how even through it all it's still family and everything can turn out all right, gangsta music with a good message. The beat is a nice smooth mellow modern G Funkish beat. great stuff. Hovi Baby [Remix] w/Jay-Z - I personally thought the original version of thsi song was one of the best tracks off the disappointing Blueprint 2. I was just blown away by how they changed teh song alot but still maintained the great song it's self it covers basically how Jay-Z has evolved in this rap game. We Ballin w/Crooked I & Eastwood - great club track. This beat will have anyone wanting to dance it has a slightly dirty south feel and normally I hate that stuff but this works well because Eastwood & Crooked I both have great ability on the mic and Crooked I even pulls off his niceest verse on the whole album even though it's kinda short. All My w/Ashanti - Ashanti is and always will be a good song writer. Her doctored voice sounds nice on this track too. It's another club banger with Irv Gotti changing his style slightly to make the song extra sweet. Tha Row (Y'all Hoes) w/Eastwood, Spider Loc & Ganxta Ridd of Boo Yaa Tribe - Thsi is a diss track calling out Snoop Dogg and the whole DPG/Dogghouse/Doggystyle Records family in retaliation to Snoop Dogg's "Pimp Slapp'd" song where he calls CEO Suge Knight & Kurupt bitchs. Now none but Eastwood really know Snoop that I know of but all their raps are pretty funny insults especially when Eastwood says Snoop can't fit in a wife beater & it's backed witha good solid beat, it shows that Death Row is still good for what it has always been good, for dissing whether it was Eazy-E & Ruthless, Biggie & Bad Boy, Or Snoop, Dre & the whole Dogghouse family. all in all it's a pretty well rounded album even though it has very little to do with the actually movie it is for baring a couple of tracks. I say it's a buyer but that's for you to decided after listening to it you can tell it's a quality album that show cases some fresh new talent from a reliable record label for quality music if anything.

Death Row is Back!,

Death Row has a storied tradition of producing top-quality soundtracks including the "Gang Related" soundtrack, and the "Murder Was the Case" soundtrack. Whether for better or for worse, the landscape at Death Row has radically changed. The great Tupac Shakur passed away just before CEO Suge Knight was sent to prison. Snoop Dogg left soon thereafter, and eventually the entire original roster had vacated. Fast forward to 2003: Tha Row has an entirely new roster, and is faced with the daunting task of continuing their earlier success. Thankfully, Suge Knight is an excellent scout of talent. He has signed underground sensation Crooked Icon, Eastwood, and re-signed accomplished MC, Kurupt (of Dogg Pound fame) to propel Death Row to the top again. The roster is referred to as the "Second Dynasty." After listening to the soundtrack, I'm proud to say that they definitely are carrying on in the footsteps of the inmates before them. BREAKDOWN: 1) Crooked I (Feat. Virginya Slim) - Still Tha Row \/\/ Ridiculous Lyrics, Production, and Song, 9/10 Overall - 8.0/10.0 This is a solid purchase, you won't be disappointed. Crooked I, Eastwood, and Tha Row Hitters production team put it down and prove that Death Row is definitely back.
