5.0 out of 5 stars Love this vacuum
I have to completely disagree with the previous review. Yes, the head size is narrow but that makes it able to get into more places. Yes, it is lightweight, but that makes it so much easier to use and in no way affects its performance. It is a super vacuum removing much more sand, dog hair, dirt and debris than our previous vacuum, which is a cumbersome, heavy, bagless...

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice vacuum, but "motorhead" is worthless
Compact, bagless, seems to create great suction. Just one problem: the carpet attachment included with this model is narrow and pathetic. I've used my share of vacuums over the years, but I've never seen anything like this. I measure it at 9" across, which means you have to make a lot more passes to cover your floor than other vacuums you've probably used. It's also...

I have to completely disagree with the previous review. Yes, the head size is narrow but that makes it able to get into more places. Yes, it is lightweight, but that makes it so much easier to use and in no way affects its performance. It is a super vacuum removing much more sand, dog hair, dirt and debris than our previous vacuum, which is a cumbersome, heavy, bagless upright. The collection canister is very easy to empty. Our carpet feels so much softer as well, so the beater bars must be working - and that's with no extra weight applied, just normal movement. We also feel it works better, by far, than the built-in we had in a previous house and the Miele we had while living in Europe. The whole engineering of this vacuum is far superior to any we've used, addressing many issues other vacuums have. So, you have to make a couple extra passes. It moves so effortlessly the only thing you'll notice is how clean and soft your carpets are.

It's also very lightweight, and rests fairly high on a wheel where it joins the wand, so that it tends to skitter across the carpet rather than aggravating it. This is on normal, tufted wall-to-wall carpet. You can get it to work if you apply downward pressure on the handle while vacuuming. Takes forever. I checked the dyson website, and no other motorhead seems to be available. In short, if you have hardwood, buy the "turbine" (air-powered) version of this. If you have carpet, avoid it like the plague.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short "Love", September 29, 2010

Unfortunately, my "love" with my Dyson DC22 Motorhead canister vacuum was only one day long!
I have it returned to Best Buy next day after delivery.
Even vacuum itself performed well, but it was so inconvenient to use it.
It has heavy, bulky handle, too narrow motorized head, which stops as soon as
load increases a little bit, awkward accessories mounting, too short electrical
cord with very weak winding. The worst is stow away. The hose would not stay
wound, accessories bracket falls off. And all that comes with $800 price tag!!!
No surprize that it has been discontinued.
I would suggest Dyson engineers to rethink this vacuum design.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE this vacuum!, January 5, 2012
This review is from: Dyson DC22 Motorhead (Kitchen)
This was an upgrade for me, from our upright Dyson, a DC14. The DC14 was still working, after 6 years, but it was just too heavy for me to lug around, and the suction wasn't as great as it should be. We bought this after reading about the Motorhead being recommended for houses with pet hair- we have 4 cats, so we needed heavy duty. I wish I had bought this sooner- I would have kept my house cleaner! It is lightweight, easy to push/pull around the house and the suction is amazing. It rivals my parents' $600 Miele canister vac. The Motorhead provides a much stronger "suck" than the other model- a turbine head. It basically has an extra motor to spin the brush and pick up more hair and dust. This model is hard to find in stores, but for us, it was worth hunting down the motorhead version.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed, December 24, 2011

This review is from: Dyson DC22 Motorhead (Kitchen)
I was extremely excited to get this Dyson, especially since it was on sale at only $369. I figured since this was once Dyson's top of the line, $800 vacuum, it would be the best. Was I wrong.... First of all, I did not know it would be as small as it is. The dust cup holds practically nothing. The power nozzle is also TINY. It takes forever to get the job done. The hose is very stiff and gets twisted easily, making the vacuum very awkward to use. It seems kind of cheap that the tools are stored on the handle was well. The digital motor is neat, and so are the finger tip controls, but that is one of the only things that I like. If this machine had a longer, more flexible hose and a bigger power nozzle, I would love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, powerful compact vacuum, August 19, 2011

This vacuum has a few unique features that really appeal to me - compact, hose wraps around for storage, motorized brush, bagless -- and it doesn't seem this combination of features is available on another vacuum.

I wasn't sure how it would perform based on a few of the negative reviews here on Amazon, but I'm so glad I purchased this vacuum. The suction is VERY powerful and really helps pick up dirt on pretty much every surface. The motorized brushbar works very well at helping pick up dirt on my area rugs. So well in fact, that I was shocked at how much dirt and dog hair it picked up from my area rugs (which were cleaned with a stick vac just a few days before). The hard floor nozzle works very well on my wood floors and bathroom tiles, although it would be nice if it had the "ball" pivoting mechanism the motorhead has. The upholstery tool works well to get dog hair off my couch and curtains. And the crevice/brush tool works well on baseboards and those areas (like next to the washing machine) that build up dirt and dust bunnies.

There are a few downsides to this product. The cord is a bit shorter than I'd like, although it's really nice that it's retractable. The bin fills up relatively quickly, but if I use the vacuum regularly I generally through get a full cleaning before emptying it. And the clear bin does require a good cleaning every few uses, which takes a few minutes. But most of these are compromises needed to have a compact vacuum, and they're well worth being able to store this on the floor of a small closet.

I'm really glad I got one of these since they're now discontinued. It seems like the advanced features of this vacuum led to too high a price, and its replacement (the DC26 "City") has an even smaller bin, has significantly less suction power, and lacks a collapsible wand. Now that the final units are almost half off the original price, this is a GREAT deal.
