3.0 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT...
I am a clean freak. I pretty much vacuum 2x/week. I've had this vacuum for a little over a year. When our last vacuum (Hoover Windtunnel) was on it's last leg, which lasted us about 4 years, I figured I would spend a little extra and get the Dyson. I hear so much about it and how great its suction power. Not to mention that I don't have to buy anymore bags and it's...

You can use the Dyson like a canister vacuum by pulling out the hose, reversing the wand, and attaching the floor tool. The little tools that come with the yellow Dyson are OK for chairs and window sills, but the so-called stair tool is too wimpy for wide stairs. For that you need the floor tool. You need the floor tool for vacuuming under chairs and tables too, because the upright doesn't go flat enough. The 17' hose, 35' power cord, top mounted carrying handle, and easy roll-about rear wheels, make the red Dyson with floor tool as good as any canister. Then simply snap the hose and handle back onto the body, and you have an upright.

If you buy the yellow one, I highly recommend buying the floor tool too (it can be purchased separately). However, I don't think the extra tools that come with the purple one are worth the extra money. The only differences among the three Dysons are the colors, tools, and price.

Suction is excellent with the Dyson upright. It picks up most dirt with one or two strokes. It's very well designed, easy to use, requires no assembly other than mounting the hose/handle combination, and is much lighter than it looks (because of the high-impact plastic construction). I was only disappointed by the noise level. Other reviewers kept praising how quiet it is, but it sounds like a vacuum to me.

If you dislike housework as much as I do, get over the sticker-shock and buy a Dyson. It will do more with less effort. You won't have to run the vacuum over the same spot again and again, and you will vacuum less often because it picks up so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love my Dyson, April 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I got my Dyson DC07 with floor tool only today but I just had to review it right away because it's awesome. I was hesitant to pay this amount for a vacuum but now would do it again.
I have previously owned two lower-end bag vacuums and one Fantom bagless, have cream-colored carpets, a constantly shedding dog (dog hair), two small children (dirt), and a husband in the construction industry (lots more dirt).
I loved the Fantom but after a year of use it started breaking continually and it just wasn't worth it anymore.
As for the Dyson, of course it has great suction power; but I expected that in paying this price. What I was most blown away by was how well thought-out this machine is.
-There's a handle for extremely easy carrying.
-It's not as loud or heavy as I expected it to be at this performance level.
-It's a breeze to empty the cannister and put it back.
-It adjusts automatically to carpet height (and got my berber really clean- which my previous vacuums could not, even the Fantom).
-It's easy to release the handle to start sweeping, and the handle goes all the way to the ground so I can get under/around things easier.
-The hose and cord go on forever so I can sweep without changing outlets or sweeper positions as often.
-I didn't even get the stair tool (used one that came with the vacuum) and it got my stairs unbelievably clean.
-The tools it comes with are so easy to pop off and use, and yet so secure (they are stored in their own cubbies on the handle itself).
If I had to name one thing that I think could be improved, it would be that at first it seems a little awkward to handle the Dyson hose. The Fantom hose was easier but it had a shorter hose, and clogged often. The Dyson hose seems sturdier and is definitely longer.
I almost feel silly saying this because it sounds so overboard, but Dyson is a genius. Everything about this vacuum says "high end" to me and there is probably nothing I would change if I could. Why can't other vacuum companies make their vacuums this user-friendly?

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!, January 10, 2004

This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I have four children and three labs, we have been through many vacuums. In one week I purchased a Lindhaus, an Oreck and this Dyson. The dyson out performed both the Oreck and the Lindhaus. We have old hardwood floors and some linoleum in the downstairs, and carpeting upstairs. My floors have never been so clean. The dyson sucks the dirt up from between the cracks in the hardwood. We can walk barefoot in the house now! Needless to say the other vacuums went back hastily. I even attatched the upholstry tool and vacuumed the dogs. A couple of days ago two of my daughters 2&3 yrs old dumped a whole bottle of baby powder every where, themselves, beds, toys etc. the whole upstairs was covered. This vacuum cleaned it all. I used it on the matresses and when I beat them there was no powder billowing out, impressive. I love this sweeper so much even if it blew up tomorrow I'd buy another right away. It is also easy to use and empty, if you get a clog it's very easy to remove, all parts snap away for easy access. I got a clog once from a hard stick, but I've sucked up dryer sheets, a baby sock and sliced cheese wrapers oh yea and a screw, the thing didn't even baulk!!!!Compared to others this one is quieter. well kids are in bed think I'll go vacuum!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Suction but Has Two Weaknesses, September 18, 2004
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
The suction, derived from a patented cyclone action, fulfills the manufacturer's promise so the Dyson gets five stars on that count. It also gets another five stars for dust control as there is no leakage and removal of dust and debris is easy. So far so good. However, when you want to use the attachment, you come across two weaknesses. First, the wand attachment has an ungainly sized hump that impedes the attachment from getting under the bed, the couch or any tight place. Second, as you pull the hose, the heavy cannister bangs against the wall, your feet, and anything that happens to be in the way. Thus when you're on the floor extending the wand under the bed, you're in essence fighting the vacuum cleaner as its heavy cannister moves this way and that way, clunking about. If I could do it all over again, I would have bought the more expensive Dyson that comes with the slim wand attachment so I could avoid the hump like handle that I've already described. One last warning: Last I checked, you can't buy the base model and then upgrade by purchasing separate attachments, such as the slim wand cleaning attachment. So I'm stuck with a four hundred dollar Dyson that fails to meet some of my performance requirements.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the machine, don't oversell it, February 20, 2004
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
First it must be said that this is a man's vacuum cleaner. Rugged construction, very logical left-brain design, and I don't have to stoop to use it - the handle is the highest I've seen.

I'll dispense with the accolades you can read below and point out a few things I didn't read elsewhere.

At every point where the vacuum line takes a turn, there's a clever quick disconnect that is amazingly easy to remove to see if something's caught in there. A little practice and they're just as easy to put back on with not an ounce of forcing needed. Everything clicks together with a light touch. Gaskets are a wonder of polymer design. They're just flexible enough, and high-friction to seat well against the ABS.

Dyson shouldn't try to hide from the fact that the 35-ft cord must be physically wrapped around the upper and lower catches. I read every word I could find and it's only mentioned in passing. Get over it. The distance between the catches is quite long - almost four feet - so it takes probably no more turns than a normal shorter cord on the other brands. And who needs a spring-loaded winder with a mind of its own?

The machine hugs the wallboards nicely so I didn't need to use the attachment tools. But let me say something about those: the crevice tool and furniture tool each have a thin row of openings at the very tip on the top, that open into little vertical channels. This draws air in and straight down, so it pushes up the dirt instead of trying to pull it up inside a little vacuum chamber. The channels also keep the tools from suctioning onto a smooth surface of sofa cloth. So simple; so smart.

I don't know how some of these reviewers live, but if they're getting a full canister after going over a rug or two, then I don't want to visit them. I am recently single, have lived in this house for three months with 5- and 9-year-old boys, and have not had a vacuum until today. They've been "careful" with cookies, shelled peanuts, rice, and other tiny things, but there was so much grit on the rugs I could sweep up at least half of it. After the Dyson run I was delighted to be able to take my socks off to walk on the rugs, but there's no full canister; just a little pile of fine dark gray stuff that doesn't quite cover the bottom. I'm not concerned; the hand-made wool Persian rugs are again as sleek and luxurious to touch as the day I brought them home. Just no full cannister. So come on reviewers: don't feel you need to exaggerate.

The colors are way cool (sorry I couldn't resist).

I don't know about HEPA standards but my throat felt dusty after vacuuming two rooms.

Sudden catching onto things: At the fringe end of the rugs you need to do a perpendicular couple of passes to avoid touching the fringe on a long pass. Same as with any vacuum but this one means business so watch out. Also, on the first passes over sections of the very low pile the machine choked when the pile changed directions. This means that it's in very close contact with the fibers. I switched from "rug" to "bare floor" (which is also said to be for short-pile rugs) and the phenomenon went away.

I don't know if it cleans out the joints between floor boards - I suspect it does - but there's no kicking around the grit on the floor. It just goes straight up into cyclone land as it's supposed to. What a pleasure! I've never had a vacuum that was so well behaved on (grit-covered) hardwood floors.

It doesn't pick up thin ribbons on the rugs. By extrapolation I guess it doesn't do well with long hair (not currently a feature here).

A few years ago my wife spent about $350 on an upright with supposedly a lot of power. It's a bear to move around, causes lower back strain from having to bend over (I'm 5'11"), frightens cats and small children with its roar, and doesn't clean rugs or bare floors with anything close to the straightforward confidence of the Dyson. If you don't have a vacuum, guys, get over to the laptop and spend some money at Amazon. BTW it arrived in two days. You gotta love it.

Four stars is a perfectly respectable rating. Nothing's perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mother of All Vacuum Cleaners, May 16, 2003
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
How many vacuums does it take to give you a clue that you've been had? Simple--four.

Over the years, I've bought dreadful, crummy, useless pieces of junk that claimed to revolutionize carpet vacuuming. The worst part of it? I didn't know how lousy my machines really were. Until I got a Dyson.

I had researched various vacuum cleaner models on the Internet, having found myself in need of ANOTHER one. I came across the Dyson. I read the reviews with reservation. After all, I've heard it all before. I pondered the cost, the strange freakin' colors. I decided to go for it regardless of my husband's aversion to the cost (side note: cheap is genetically coded into all Y-chromosomes).

I choose the red and purple model, breaking out of my comfort zone of the somber blue, gray, or black of my past models. I got my Dyson, and, oh yeah, can we say marvelously brilliant here? This vacuum should be on a pedestal when not in use. Never mind that when I first saw it I thought of my daughter when she was three, playing house with her toy vacuum cleaner, while my boy played with his plastic red and yellow lawnmower (lawnmowers, another pet peeve). I test drove my new vacuum cleaner and nothing--I mean nothing--will ever convince me that there is a better model than the Dyson. Even my teenagers used it--a BIG test of endurance for sure. Teenagers and vacuuming? Nah! But hey, the vacuum cleaner was NEW. They had vacuumed up a writing pen. Blue, big, deadly for any other model but the Dyson. I just plucked the pen out of the easily accessible pipe behind the dust cylinder and went on without feeling the need to launch a tirade at my teenagers. Trust me, the Dyson is powerful, well designed, and sturdy. Basically, it's the Mother of All Vacuum Cleaners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its Great but some disadvantages!, August 13, 2003

Noella Forero (Elgin, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
Before I purchased the Dyson Dc07 I tried Orick Vac and that thing had only a few advantage over the Dyson and that is the Orick was really light weight and it could go under coffee tables and chairs with ease.
The Dyson sucks so well when I use the floor attachment on the bare floor I cannot lift it for it sucks the floor! Not even me and my husband can break off the suction. Its amazing! Right away it pulled up so much dirt in my carpet which I had it profestionally cleaned not even a week ago! So I am shocked at the power.
There are a few draw backs but I would still pay the money for it.
1>)One is its a little heavy for my taste and if you pay the price it should have power stearing like my old vac.
2>) Its made out of plastic and the first vac Amazon sent me was broken so I dont think its a good sterdy plastic so I am very careful. Normally I am very hard with my vacs.
3>)Third, Unless you get the floor attachments you cannot get it under a coffee table or chairs.
But for the power your getting is well worth all the above sacrafices!
It actually Makes your Carpet FEEL and LOOK Clean!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dyson DC07 Steel/Yellow, January 12, 2003
By
Weatherwiser (Cedar Brook, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
We just purchased this upright vacuum cleaner after reading all the consumer ratings and reviews we could find on Hoover, Eureka and the rest. We went to Best Buy armed with our research and were so impressed with the Dyson demo the salesman gave us that we ended up buying it. We just had new carpet installed and this is an unbelievable vacuum cleaner that has only recently been sold in the U.S. since it's made in the U.K. However, the price is $.... This vacuum is based on new "cyclonic" technology and all the others (Hoover, Eureka, Kirby) are now trying to capitalize on the technology as well. But nobody has it like a Dyson. It has incredible suction and does an outstanding job of cleaning carpets and hardwood floors. It's also bagless with a Hepa filter. I told my wife we have to be crazy to pay $... for vacuum cleaner, but it does an excellent job. In one bedroom, the carpet now looks like it did 5 years ago! The attachment hose is integrated and you can vacuum the steps all the way to the top while the vacuum remains at the bottom!

Just go to Best Buy and ask for a demo and you will see for yourself. Another guy also bought one too after swearing he would not pay over $... for a vacuum for his wife. If your're looking for the best vacuum cleaner out their today, get a Dyson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tired of BS ratings, December 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
Okay, I'm going to set the story straight. I'm tired of seeing bogus ratings on Amazon. I think the manufacturers or representatives are having too much fun trying to bash each other. I just bought my Dyson from Best Buy and received it via UPS last night. I am an engineer in Kansas City and I have NO relationship to any vacuum manufacturer-I'm just a customer. I was hesitant after reading the complaints. Let me summarize:

1. "The Dyson is very hard to put together"---Wrong. I had it assembled, skimmed the instruction book, and tested it in less than 10 minutes.
2. "You can't store all of the tools onboard"---Lie. All of the tools store with the exception of the large floor tool. Most vacuums don't come with this anyway, so this is an irrelevant complaint.
3. "Damaged in shipping". I suppose this could happen. However, mine was shipped via Best Buy and there was not a problem at all.
4. "Consumer Reports only rates it number 14."-Well Consumer Reports is the world's largest rip off. Who cares what they say.
5. "Unit tips over when using hose attachment"---A total lie! This unit is sturdy as the hose is anchored at the bottom of the vacuum! I tried and couldn't get it to tip.
6. "Can't clean close to the wall"---Perhaps. But I'm sure it's no worse than any other vacuum.
7. "Poor suction"-Well, it's suppose to be the best suction on bare floors (even per Consumer Reports). I'm not sure if it's great on carpet or not, but it was picking up dirt that my old Dirt Devil bagless had never picked up! Rather gross actually!

These were some of the complaint I read that concerned me. However, they're totally unfounded! Here are the positives that I see over any other vacuum cleaner-despite the obvious things:
1. This thing is EXTREMELY quiet! My wife and I could literally carry on a conversation from two different levels of the house while I was using it! And the kids were sleeping!
2. It just looks cool despite the funny colors!
3. Lifetime filters
4. An awesome method for dumping the "debris"! The bottom drops out and everything falls into the trash! Simple and clever!
5. Never have to adjust the unit for different pile heights!
6. This thing can steer and turn on a dime! My 4 year old could literally push it around with ease!
7. This thing was pulling dirt out of the carpet that I never knew was there! I think the suction is absolutely sufficient!
8. The hose and its attachments are extremely versatile! They can be attached three different ways!
9. Very ergonomic handle compared to anything else on the market.
10. Dyson was sued by one of the leading vacuum manufacturers. Dyson won because of the uniqueness of their design! Then, Hoover infringed on their patents and they beat Hoover!! Even Hoover tried to steal the idea because it is superior to their own products! I think this says a lot! Support the small company over large corporations.

Now, to be constructive, I list some of the negatives that people may "perceive":
1. The hose attachment is so versatile that it could be difficult to use. It's not a "quick-draw" style like on so many other units. But the versatility can really not be overlooked!
2. No headlight----but who vacuums in the dark anyway?
3. Expensive---But for $100 more than the nicest Hoover, I think you get what you pay for.
4. No automatic cord reel----I think these things break anyway, so the standard "wrap" is fine with me. But, when the cord is stored/wrapped, you can not use the hose attachment!

This is a totally unbiased review. After 10 minutes, I was already glad I bought this unit! Don't believe the other lies you read on Amazon.com. This unit is definitely a 5 star unit!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but hard to tell if it is really worth the expense, December 29, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dyson DC07 Low Reach Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
Just like the all the other reviewers, I have a bazillion dogs/children making for so much dirt, and the Dyson sucks it all up much better than the 9 year old cannister vac it replaced.

Instead of echoing the other reviewers I thought it worthwhile to give a more balanced view.

Comparing a bagless upright to a cannister vac w/bag isn't fair. Clearly bagless is going to work better than "with-bag". An upright is going to do better than a cannister due to the shorter suction path. You also can't see how much dirt you are picking up with a bag vac like you can with the Dyson.

I certainly wish we had been able compare the Dyson to another bagless upright to really know if the Dyson is worth the extra cost.

The vacuum does feel heavy but it rolls very easily; pretty cool. Our 5 year old had no problem driving it all over the place. If only we could get him to vacuum with it.

The onboard storage for the attachments is very handy and much better than our old vac. I wish there were a good place for the floor tool but that would just make the Dyson heavier.

Emptying the dust bucket is very satisfying. One button releases the cannister from the vac. A trigger drops the bottom out of the cannister dumping all of the dirt, dust, and dog hair into the trash.

Proof always being in the pudding (chocolate?), the Dyson does have much more suction power than our old vac and it has done a better job cleaning carpets and upholstery. The Dyson also does a good job keeping dust out of the exhaust air as well. Some of the attachments do require some care to make sure you get good suction contact.

If you're used to a cannister vac, you'll miss the retacting cord feature. If you plan on using the wand, you'll end up uncoiling all of the long cord. I wish this was better accounted for although there is a quick release tab that makes this easy.

This concern about having to turn the handle around to use the attachments is interesting. You don't have to actually turn it around. You can use the handle backwards which is clever and nice.

Lastly, some tips for selecting which model to buy:

The difference between models in a given line is the color and the attachments they come with. Since the reviews of the rotating mini-brush on the Animal were mediocre and we've not missed the failed mini-brush from our old vac, we decided to save a some dollars and get the Low Reach/Floor tool model.

If you look at the Dyson website, you'll also notice that the newer DC14 models have less suction and a smaller dust bucket. I confirmed this with Dyson folks and I suspect there may have been complaints about too much suction power. The lower suction/less capacity coupled with the higher price and enough comments about the DC14's having some design flaws in the beater bar assembly led us to pick this (DC07) model and we are very very pleased.
