4.0 out of 5 stars Great portable vacuum to almost replace your real vacuum, January 19, 2011
By
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
I've had this vacuum (Australian model) for a couple of months now and am very happy. I definitely recommend it. It is so good it will probably replace using the larger Dyson DC 08 we have, or at least reduce the amount of times we have to pull it out.

A few thoughts so far:

Pros
This has the typical advantages of normal Dyson vacuum cleaners such as bagless, easy to use (and empty), great suction, etc but here are a few more
+ Cordless means it is quick and easy to grab and use so it's great for cleaning up around the dining table and after the kids. I'm more likely to use this and vacuum occasionally, rather than waiting til everything is really dirty before dragging our big vacuum cleaner out
+ Can use with or without the wand attachment which means it is much more flexible than an upright vacuum cleaner
+ Solidly built and very easy to clean/use and move around.
+ The suction is probably as good as my big Dyson (or almost as good). It is fantastic for cleaning the car mats/seats.
+ 15 mins of suction is more than enough to do the dirty bits of the house, and in fact almost all the house. I wasn't sure about this but it's more than enough (e.g. yesterday I did 5 rooms + hallway and it didn't run out of charge).
+ Fast to charge (approximately 3 hours) and comes with docking station
+ Li ion battery means no battery memory, and it has a removable battery which means it can be easily replaced. Batteries hopefully aren't too ruinously expensive (they seem ok from my current check)
+ Looks great. :)

Cons (most of these are fairly minor)
- Expensive, it would be cheaper to buy some of the other Dysons!
- A little bit heavier and harder on the wrist/hand than I thought (but I guess that is why it has a decent battery life). After 5 mins vacuuming, my hand was slightly sore but you can always change hands.
- Don't like having to squeeze the trigger all the time. There is no way to leave it on. This constant squeezing of the trigger may contribute to the sore hand/wrist.
- Electrical cord is rather short, especially given most power points are on the floor and the docking station will be up high. It means your docking station needs to be very close to a power point or you need an extension cord
- Motorised head is narrower than I thought so it takes longer to vacuum than using the big Dyson, but the tradeoff is not having to move the extra weight of a full sized vacuum
- A flexible hose attachment for getting hard to reach places (e.g. under the car seat) is not included
- No pass through charge, otherwise I could vacuum while it is on the charger (and use it as a normal vacuum)
- Doesn't stand upright by itself (but that's not a big deal).
- When charging, the charging status light is shown on the adapter at the power point, not on the vacuum cleaner itself. This is really strange, especially given
(i) your power point is likely to be low, less visible than the top of the vacuum cleaner, and possibly even obscured.
(ii) there is an indicator light on top of the vacuum that indicates when it is turned on. This light should have been used to indicate charge status. I'm not sure why this indicator light is needed for feedback given you can't really turn it on by accident, and if you do it emits this loud vacuuming noise. A charging indicator on the cleaner itself would be helpful (but not essential).

5.0 out of 5 stars Dyson DC35 in a word: AWESOME, April 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
First ever Dyson product and we absolutely LOVE IT. Read all the reviews, blahblahblah, took the plunge and ordered it. After about a week of use, here's my take:

- Suction is great. Don't know what planet the people are on who say it's lacking here. Oh, and BTW: Vacuum varies based on elevation, so if you live at like 9,000' yeah, ANY vacuum won't suck (or will suck, depending on where you're coming from).
- Overall design is fantastic. Smart, smart, smart. Dyson obviously puts a LOT of thought into their design and I, for one, appreciate that.
- Trigger: So I was concerned about this. But it's fine. Actually, it's (look for the theme, here) SMART. Why? Because you're looking at about 15 minutes runtime. Which is plenty. But the trigger forces you to turn the damn thing OFF when you move to another room, put it down to move a chair, whatever. Think about it: They put an ON/OFF switch and some dimwit will leave it on when they walk off to answer the phone, check on Fluffy, whatever...and when the battery runs out they will be the ones to gripe. So the trigger is fine. No sweat.
- Maneuverability: This thing will go ANYWHERE. Whatever it "supposedly" lacks in anything else, it makes up for in ease of use and the ability to get into small, strange places.
- Cost: Yeah, it's expensive. So are luxury cars and you generally get what you pay for. Given that this thing improves my quality of life I am MORE than happy to pay the price.
- Accessories/Mounting Plate: Again, smart and very minimalistic.
- Battery life: OK, so I live in a smaller home, about 1,600 sq. ft. and while I have yet to run out of juice I can understand how if you lived in a big house this might be an issue. Not sure what to tell you...either get a corded one or just vacuum for 15 minutes at a time. I read a review where a lady said "Life is too short to spend more than 15 minutes vacuuming." Well-said, lady. Well-said.

I have used this thing nearly every day for three reasons: 1) It's just cool. 2) I am consistently amazed with the stuff it picks up. And let me tell you, we keep a clean house. That said, I dump the canister and just shake my head. 3) When something is easy to use, you're more likely to use it. Being cordless is just the way to go.

So by now you are sick of reading so let me just tell you that the Dyson gets two big thumbs up/5-stars from a hard-to-please, penny-pinching skeptic of a consumer.

5.0 out of 5 stars An upright cordless that actually works, January 24, 2011
By
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
This cordless vacuum really works and is a pleasure to use. If you've ever struggled with another upright cordless, you'll know what I mean. (If you've never used a cordless vacuum, imagine the difference between a mains-tethered motormower and petrol-powered version.)

Here's how the DC35 stands out:

* Power. While less powerful than a mains-powered vacuum, it's surprisingly good for a cordless and only occasionally annoys you by failing to pick something up. (Others are so weak you end up wishing you lugged out the mains-powered vacuum). Dyson say the power doesn't drop as the dust container fills, and this seems to be true from using it. Looking at how it's constructed, you can see why this is so - other manufacturers, take note!)
* Ease of emptying. For obvious reasons, portables have a small capacity and need frequent emptying. This model is (possibly?) unique in that you just press a button and the waste flicks cleanly out the bottom without an airborne dust explosion.
* Build and design quality. It's clear that the manufacturers have avoided cutting corners (and the price reflects it).

It doesn't entirely replace a mains-powered vacuum (or a hired cleaner), but I find this cordless does 95% of what's important. Battery life is only 13 minutes but life is too short to spend longer than that vacuuming. Once you get skilled at using it, 13 minutes of run-time is enough to do the main area of a medium-sized house plus half of the remaining rooms (which you alternate each time you vacuum). Perfect.

The motorized head is effective on both hard surfaces and carpets. It also comes with crevice/brush tools for getting into corners or cleaning the car. (Again, 13 minutes is a sensible time limit for vacuuming a car!) Unlike the Electrolux Boss I had before, the filter in the DC35 is not made of fragile paper that you have to periodically replace. It's solid and washable. The vacuum comes with a wall-mountable docking station although you don't have to to use it - you can keep the power cable separate from the docking station and just plug it in to recharge. The charger stops when the battery is full, so you leave it on all the time without shortening the battery life through overcharging.

I should also say this has a great 'feel' and is as fun as vacuuming gets. I don't find it hard to hold the trigger down continuously and the whole thing is light and maneuverable. This is the vacuum for people who have things to do in life besides cleaning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best cordless vacuum ever, February 4, 2011
By
Saibal (Fremont, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
After going thru nearly half a dozen cordless vacuums (Black & Decker, Electrolux and others), this really is the last vacuum you will buy - for two reasons - it does the work very well and you will be broke!

I took away one star for not providing a power switch lock option where I don't have to strain my finger holding it down all the time while using the vacuum.

It is very powerful, very well designed, has all the nozzles you need, can reach stuff on the floor and under the cot without bending down. And it is very easy to clean just like my 7 year old Dyson canister vacuum. Love the wall mounted charging stand much better than my floor mounted stand for my Electrolux. Keeps the floor uncluttered.

We wanted a vacuum that we could use in between house cleaning service and to pick up cat hair lumps. Works great!

Had to buy directly from Dyson online as no one seems to have any inventory. It is always frustrating buying from Dyson online as they never tell you the status of the order, but they ship very fast.

2.0 out of 5 stars Think Dyson forgot to test this first......, April 8, 2011
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
This is a great little cordless vacuum for cleaning out the car, and a quick sweep of the baseboards or other small messes. It does have good suction and is compact (albeit slightly heavier than other cordless handhelds), but unfortunately that is where the "pros" of this device end. For the cost, and the fact that Dyson makes such a big deal about how much time they spend testing and improving their products I just can't believe they released this as is!
Here are the cons: 1) You have to hold the "on" button the entire time you are using the product! Just unbelievable and EXTREMELY disappointing. Just seemed like it should have a been a "no-brainer" that a product has an auto-on button and not a manual-on button, 2) VERY short battery life - for a 3 1/2 hour charge time you get maybe 15 minutes max of cleaning. I know it's cordless, but again - for the price I just expected more, 3) The rotating brush on the attachment stops way too easy and if you don't have it attached to the long pole - it's way too "floppy" to really clean anything well.
Bottom line, save your money for now! Maybe they will come out with an improvement to these problems in the future, or perhaps you can find a comparable/better product for cheaper....

5.0 out of 5 stars Dyson DC35 cordless mini vacuum, March 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
Very impressed with this cordless, rechargable, mini vac. It is very spendy but you get your money's worth. Very easy to use for multiple purposes. I am not impressed with the way it vacuumes my area floor rug, but my other vacuum did no better. I have all tile flooring downstairs and it is a wiz to use and it does pick up the dust, dirt and sand. Easily converts to small handheld vac for all areas inside the car cleaning. The dirt canister is very small but very easy to empty. Push the red button on the side and the bottom flips open and you never touch any dirt or have to disassemble to empty. I really like the washable filter, it is not a paper type and is very durable. I easily convert the vac to a small handheld vac with rotary powered head in order to quickly clean my stairway going upstairs. This carpet it cleans easily. The battery last about 12 minutes and when it dies, it dies. You can easily have an extra battery ready in order to keep on cleaning. The charger is designed to charge a battery all by itself without the vacuum being attached. This vac is the best cordless vac I have ever had. I have had electrolux, hover, bissel, red devil, shark and this is the best out of all of them combined. I highly recommend it if your are wanting a high quality cordless vac, it has the power equal to a corded vacuum. I have tried a number of the other cordless vac's on the market and they do not have the suction power or the adaptabilty of this one. This vac makes cleaning quick, easy, fun, and fast. That is saying a lot since there is more to life then cleaning. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a 1 bedroom aparment, April 30, 2011
By
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
Pricey but cool. I never thought I would say that about a vacuum cleaner. But that's because vacuum cleaners of the past were always very loud, inconvenient, tethered by a cord, and clunky. This feels more like a power tool than a vacuum cleaner. I don't know why all the commercials feature a woman. They could definitely market this to men, like in the ol' shop cleaning up sawdust or their unnecessary sports car, it definitely has the feel of a new cordless drill or gadget.

Dyson has done a good job here. When I take the floor stick off of it and attach the brush I call it "the cleaning gun". Its like a high-tech dirt destroyer.

Because of this device, I have a cleaner home overall. A few minutes here and there winds up with formerly unreachable dust removed from all the lampshades, tops of mirrors, molding, etcetera. Cobwebs in corners? Eliminated with one reach of the arm. Its so easy and convenient you'll use it to clean up small stuff like a pile of crumbs.

For cleaning the carpets, it pulls a lot more out than you'd expect for something this quiet. (Quiet may be relative but its high-pitched instead of the low pitch of larger vacuums and the sound doesn't seem to carry). I think the rotating brush on the bottom does a nice job with carpets, I feel like the place is just as clean as with the old upright bagless I had. The floor attachment is also small enough to fit in more spaces, meaning less moving of furniture. This is why I say its good for a one bedroom apartment. For a big home, you might want a 2nd, larger vac.

The clear canister shows you your progress very easily. It has to be emptied quite a bit, but there's no way around that with something this size. It opens easily and most of the dirt pours right out. Occasionally you might want to reach in with an old toothbrush or something similar to pry any caked dust from inside the dust canister.

Battery life is not awesome at 15ish mins, but long enough to clean the carpets and then some. Since its so easy to just start using, you use it more often and clean for shorter intervals.

I'm happy with this thing. I like having a clean place but I always hated vacuuming, and having to position a larger unit to reach anything other than carpets was super annoying. That brings me to size and weight. I have no trouble with holding the trigger for 15 minutes or carrying this around, but I can see how your average couch potato might complain. I think they should have made a lock on the trigger, but having the trigger instead of a lock also saves precious battery life.

Definitely buy this thing if you have a few dollars to spend. You will have a cleaner home and spend less time/frustration cleaning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Vacuum, February 24, 2011
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
This is definitely the best hand held vacuum out there, and a good upgrade from dc31. The biggest difference that is not visual is Dyson finally included a Lithium battery witch extends working time to around 15 minutes from 10 compared to dc31. The other thing I noticed that most pictures shows light blue color ( maybe it's Australian version) The US version it's a dark neon blue.

The vacuum itself works great to pick up some spots, and hard to reach places that my Neato (robot vacuum)could not get to. Plus do to long reach wand it perfect for cleaning blinds and ceiling fans, I did had to buy a different head attachment to do this task. On top of that with extra battery time, vacuuming a car is much nicer.

DC35 like the previous model has 2 vacuuming modes, regular and MAX. To go to the MAX mode, simply press the button at the back of the unit. With the MAX mode your battery time also cuts in half, but this is the one that I prefer using a motorised floor tool attached. Now I do have a low pile carpet and the motorized tool works great, very easy to move it, and picks up dirt very easily. But I also have a 2 high pile rugs, and this thing is useless an them. It's almost impossible to move it on this type of rug. I never had that problem with other vacuums.

Noise from the vacuum in a MAX mode reminds me of a low power drill. In a regular mode is quite silent. DC35 is also bag-less. All dust and dirt can be seen inside a transparent canister. With a press of a button, you can open the canister to clear the dirt out. The only one thing I didn't like about the dirt bin, is that lid itself has 3 pieces of plastic that sticks out and when you try to empty the bin dust do tend to get caught on them, making it more difficult to empty.

The wall charger/attachment is a great addition it also has 2 locks on the bottom to hold additional accessories that comes with the dc35. The power cord however is not very long about 4.5 feet long. Just do some planing before installing it. Another odd thing the light that indicates that vacuum is charging is on the power adapter. But it is only on when the vacuum is plugged in, so if you missed to properly put the Dyson in to it's wall charger the light stays off.
I do wish that the trigger would have some kind of lock for extended period of vacuuming. But it's a minor thing I can live with, since most of the use is for short period of time, but I can see where the older people would have a problem there.
Any questions - leave a comment.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is true., May 8, 2011
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
I just purchased a Dyson DC35 Digital at our local Target, since it was the same seller and price as Amazon and both included state tax. I have four large dogs. Two of them are German Shepherds (known among owners as "German Shedders). I also have a mix of floor surfaces: wood, tile, medium-pile carpet and low-pile area rugs. And the cars, one of which is "the dog car" and basically covered in fur.

Reading the reviews, I thought the Dyson might be helpful, since every other handheld has given up the ghost after a few months, or simply been inadequate. But I also thought it might not be all it was claimed to be.

It is. Like other reviewers, I was shocked by the amount of "stuff" it pulled from my rugs, the canister filled over and over again with hair and fine, talcum-like dust. It also basically "dusted" the floor and cleaned the tile better than anything I have ever used and the low profile makes it possible to get under and clean areas that are inaccessable to a regular vacuum. It also works well on the medium-pile.

The trigger handle is designed so that you do have to push it in while you vacuum, but the grip is designed so that is basically what you do when you hold it anyway. When you use it as a "hand held" without the exension, it is a bit heavy, but it does so much so quickly, that it is not really a problem. The flip-cannister is a great idea, although with the amount of medium length dog hair I am pulling up, it does sometimes require pulling out as well as just dumping. The exhaust blowing on you as you vacuum is also not really a problem, since it is not "dust" but just air.

I am now waiting for my Dyson DC17 Animal ordered through Amazon...

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Little Vac!, April 5, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digitial Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.)
I had never owned a Dyson before but had heard all of the hype. I have multiple devices for vacuuming, including a high-end Royal that cost a fortune, weighs a TON and I have always HATED using. After reading reviews of this little thing, I thought I would try it. I am very happy with it! Yes, I will agree with those that don't like the "trigger" type on/off switch and if you had hand or grip issues, this could become a problem for you, but I don't so I can deal with it. I have two young children so they are mess makers extraordinaire, so this thing is perfect for those kinds of messes! We have hardwood floors in the kitchen so I can suck up whatever they drop during meals, I can vacuum up dropped cereal or snacks from carpeted areas, I had FUN cleaning our cold air return vents (that are not supposed to be FURRY!) and the spider webs in the high ceiling corners with the long extension wand and it did a great job on our carpeted stairs as well. My husband calls me "Cleaning Rambo" because I run around here with this thing, cleaning everything I see! And I am not someone that normally likes cleaning, but this thing actually makes it kind of fun and easy. I only took off one star for the "trigger" switch that might make your hand sore after awhile. I'm happy with my purchase and am going to go and use it right now!
