5.0 out of 5 stars yeah, it's an Animal...for dirt and doghair!
Ok, I'm biased because I love animals but this Animal is fabulous! We have two dogs (one shorthaired and one double-coated) and live in a mountainous rural area: can you say doghair, dirt, and firewood chips? Since I was always switching to the old upright's hose to clean under cabinets, dog beds, steps, corner cobwebs, I started thinking a canister vac might save alot...

1.0 out of 5 stars 6 mos and it's time for a replacement
I have gotten extremely frustrated with this product after 6 months. I cannot vacuum a room without cleaning the head multiple times. With two small children leaving a trail of debris, this vacuum is NOT up to the task. I am not spending several minutes trying to pick up every single shred of anything the kids have left out or scattered because it WILL choke this machine...

5.0 out of 5 stars yeah, it's an Animal...for dirt and doghair!,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)Ok, I'm biased because I love animals but this Animal is fabulous! We have two dogs (one shorthaired and one double-coated) and live in a mountainous rural area: can you say doghair, dirt, and firewood chips? Since I was always switching to the old upright's hose to clean under cabinets, dog beds, steps, corner cobwebs, I started thinking a canister vac might save alot of time after my husband broke the not-so-old upright. This DC39 Animal (the purple one) does *ALL* the jobs of the non-Dyson upright far faster and better, and it doesn't fall on me while using the hose like the old upright did. It's soooo light to move around rather than the heavy upright that I used to have to pick up to carefully vacuum all the fringed rugs we have (I inherited them; if YOU have a choice, buy non-fringed rugs!) and, with the Animal, I just push the button to turn off the brushhead and run the turbine head right over that fringe. Oh, and picks up an amazing amount of dirt along with the doghair!
The canister really does follow you around very easily (heels better than my dogs lol) and does not fall over--I forget it's there and take it around corners and over rugs without any tipping. The turbine head does most of the picking-up-doghair work with the included "mini me" version doing service on the dogbed edges. The other included attachments are a crevice tool which can slide a brush down for gentler pickup but it's too big to fit under the fridge or freezer, and a stair element which works great on the four carpeted steps up to our garage. The tube part of the handle adjusts easily to different heights and the turbine head has a Dyson ball-type joint where it joins the tube; it can get extremely flat and turns every which way, allowing me to clean under furniture and cabinet edges that I used to have to dust mop after I vacuumed.
Another huge plus for me is very little bending is needed with this vac. I have a bad back and am tall so I love being able to turn it on and off and retract the cord with my foot and turn off the brushhead at the handle. No more bending over to switch from bare floor to low rug to high rug to hose! Pulling out the cord (and un- and re-plugging) and pulling off/reinstalling the canister are the only bending required.
What could be better? Well, of course, the price be better (lower) but I think how easy and fast it is to have a great cleaning job and it's worth it. The tube and handle fit awkardly onto the canister so right now I just prop it up in the closet and will get a vacuum hose holder to hang it securely. The cord could be longer but I wouldn't trade a longer cord for non-retracting that I have to wind myself. There could have been more attachments included, again for the price, as I bought the extra Home Cleaning Kit (see below). The doghair sticks to the Turbine Head and tube but I wiped it down with some anti-static spray as someone recommended and that helps a bunch. The canister could hold more and I've read other complaints about emptying bagless vacs but that's not specific to the Dyson anymore and you just have to use common sense to be empty it in a tall garbage can. If you have a zillion carpeted stairs, the included stair attachment is perhaps small (I'm not familiar with other stair attachments) and could take awhile.
I wanted the (not included) Home Cleaning Kit primarily for the Multi-Angle Brush to clean my high bookshelves and cabinet tops without a stepladder and many dustrags. The crevice tool brush does a good job on dusting but the Soft Brush is wider and cleans in a keyboard in one swipe. The Stiff Bristle brush I haven't had to use yet but wait until we're back from the spring cattle roundup and have to clean that muddy truck.
This vac does several jobs (vacuuming, dusting, dust mopping) in one fell swoop so I get cleaning chores done faster and easier. How much more can you really ask of a vacuum?

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It!,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)I've had two Dyson uprights, the first wonderful, the second not so great. The little carpet height sensor got very worn down and scratched my wood floor in addition to the hose breaking. I decided to give Dyson another go and ordered this vac. I have 2 kids,, 3 dogs, and a cat (I often feel like it is Noah's arc). The item was well packaged and very easy to set up. It did wonderfully on my wood floors and my area rug looked like it had been shampooed when I finished. I love that it's smaller than an upright and can get in between and under the furniture. I also purchased the hard floor attachment, but honestly, wish I hadn't. It is fine to use it after the bulk of the dog hair is up, but I found that the massive dog hair tumble weeds got stuck around the edges and the included turbine head was simply more effective. It's very easy to maneuver, and I found myself forgetting that I was pulling a canister behind me. It got up all the dog hair and even did a really great job getting the dust off the floor! Great on grouted tile as well! Initial first impression ....it's a must buy. Will update after I've put it through its paces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Vacuum,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)I have been using the DC39 Animal for 2.5 weeks now on carpet (short dense pile and Berber and very short pile throw rugs) and tile with two indoor/outdoor cats shedding in spring in an ultra-dry environment (lots of static). It is amazingly quiet and light, super maneuverable, and very effective. I have used a number of Kenmore Canister vacuums throughout my adult life. I was initially disappointed with the narrow width of the head, but have since grown to appreciate how many more places it can fit. It is very easy to empty and keep clean. I empty it into my garage trash can while outside to avoid reapplying dust inside. It stores in a relatively small space compared to other older style canister vacuums. The small rotating-brush head works wonderfully on upholstered furniture. The combo dusting brush/crevice tool is space saving and effective. Sometimes I miss having a light on the large rotating-brush head, but, the design is far superior to a powered head and an acceptable compromise. The adjustable length wand is a plus. Dyson's statement that it never looses suction across surface changes is NOT a gimmick. It is a well designed product that is attractive and a pleasure to use. In my opinion, this vacuum is far superior to others in its price range.

1.0 out of 5 stars 6 mos and it's time for a replacement,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)I have gotten extremely frustrated with this product after 6 months. I cannot vacuum a room without cleaning the head multiple times. With two small children leaving a trail of debris, this vacuum is NOT up to the task. I am not spending several minutes trying to pick up every single shred of anything the kids have left out or scattered because it WILL choke this machine up. The head has an extremely narrow opening behind the brush that is the first choke point. It's such a small opening I cannot get my pinky finger into it. This means anything smaller than the diameter of your pinky has to be picked off the floor. All the suction in the world is useless if it plugs pea-sized objects (cheerios, popcorn, etc...).
The other big down side is cleaning the brush. While much easier to remove than my old DC07, this brush has to be cleaned far more frequently or the brush stops spinning. Because the brush is powered by suction and not a belt, it is fairly weak. It takes very little hair to stop it up and several minutes to clean it.
I do hate to give this vacuum such a low rating, because I was a huge fan of the DC07 and of Dyson's story. Unfortunately, the flaws aren't minor. Yes, the unit has great suction with quality components, but the chokepoints are killing it for me and after 6 months, I think I'm ready to start shopping for a cheap replacement. I can't afford another Dyson experiment going back to their upright.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best there is,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleanerOur previous vacuum was a SEBO, and before that a Miele. We have two large hair-shedding dogs and two very hair-shedding cats And family members who are allergic to all of them. So we've always looked for a vacuum with excellent air filtering. But this is the first that is specific for pet hair. This machine is incredible! I just vacuumed the dog mat in front of the wood stove. Which I had just vacuumed with our old machine. It was incredible how much pure dust and the amount of hair the Dyson lifted AFTER the pride of German Engineering had done it's job! Simply amazing! My sister in law has a Dyson and I was put off by the noise level. So had never considered Dyson before. But their engineers seem to have addressed this problem well. No noisier than our previous machine; much more portable and easier to move around. Outstanding machine. Excellent value. AND Dyson even provides a small turbo head for hand vacuuming. Can't wait to try it on my car interior, which no machine, yet, has managed to rid of dog hair....I think this one will.
CAN I ADD THIS COMMENT AFTER SIX MONTHS USE... Have not changed my opinion. Turns out to be as excellent as I'd hoped

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)Great vacuum, make your research before buying to get the best deal. I was indecisive between the DC41 and DC39. This is my first Dyson and decided for the DC39. Very powerful and glides on the floor. I have used upright all my life and it took me little to get used to tug the canister behind me because I was used to clean moving backwards. With the canister you need to do the opposite otherwise the cable will get on the way.
-5 year warranty
-Maintenance free, just rinse the filter with water once a month, That is it!
-Price; however, I came accross many reviewers that have used the same model of dyson for more than 7 years. It does not surprise me since this Vacuum has 5 years of warranty. You cannot go wrong with this one, considering I have changed vacuum
-Storage: the way it is intended takes too much space versus an upright.
-Convinience: It cannot pick up the pieces of cereal that my one year old baby throws down to the floor, not because of power but because the pieces can not go through the head and into the suction hose. There is a trick for this by moving the actual head over the pieces and it works better.
Overall, this is a quality product and and I am happy with it. I am actually considering and additional Dyson DC35 for quick pick ups.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment - a warning,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)This is such a disappointing piece of equipment. I purchased it because it is light weight and because I have two cats, one with long hair. I have had this vacuum less than a year. Normally, my house cleaner uses it, but I tried to use it myself recently. I knew the canister was very small, but I had not realized that the warning line to empty it is only about 1/3rd of the way up the canister. That is equivalent to vacuuming about 1/2 of a large area rug. On my first attempt to empty it, the hinged door on the bottom of the canister fell off in my hand. The only thing that holds it on is two nubs of hard plastic -- that's what constitutes a hinge for a vacuum that cost just under $500. I can't force it back on.
This vacuum is advertised as ideal for people with pets. It is extremely frustrating to use because it seems to have to be emptied 4 or 5 times for a 1400 sq. foot place. That is an inadequate design. Another factor in my purchase of this was the 5 year so called warranty. When I contacted Dyson about it, they said I would have had to return it within the first 30 days if I was dissatisfied for poor design or operation. After that, the only thing they will do is repair or replace broken parts. If I remember correctly, it was used only once in the first 30 days -- and not by me. They said they "can't" take it back -- which translates to "won't." They did however offer me a 20% discount on a new Dyson. I asked why they thought I would be foolish enough to buy another Dyson.
Please be warned that the design on that hinged door appears to be the same on all models. It is cheap construction, and if it comes apart, the average person isn't going to be able to put it back together.
THE FOLLOWING IS AN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE REVIEW WHICH I WROTE SEVERAL WEEKS AGO.
I have been in repeated contact with Dyson over my dissatisfaction with this machine. The machine is now on its way back to me from their service center. I sent it in because the plastic threaded fitting that joined the power head to the wand fractured while in ordinary use. I was told that this is the only time they have ever seen that happen -- guess I am just lucky. I requested a refund. They said no. I requested that they replace it with an upright that might be a bit more sturdy. They said no. After that first 30 days, they will only fix or replace broken parts. When I asked if they warrantee functionality or design, I was told no. Today I broke down and bought a new vacuum -- obviously NOT A DYSON!

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry but I hate my Dyson,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)So I know there are a lot of you Dyson lovers out there but to tell the truth, I wish I had spent $500 getting my 20 year old Miracle MAte refurbished.
Here are my complaints. I have the DC Animal canister with turbine head, I HATE the turbine head, what a stupid idea. It works when it feels like working, if you suck up anything bigger that a little scrap of paper it jams, and if the canister (I'll get to that) is even 1/2 full the turbine head doesn't work. Hair will NOT just suck up but it twists around the turbine head an dyou MUST pull it apart almost every time you use it.
The Canister is WAY too small. I have to clean it out everytime I vacuum and it is REALLY hard to clean. It's very narrow, and you can't even get your hand in with a paper towel to clean it out. And it must get cleaned out or it gets goopy and gross. The canister is full of grooves on the outside and is always covered in dust and crap.
As for being for animal hair, yes, it sucks it up BUT at ball joint on the turbine head, the hair can escape and the joint on the outside is always covered in dog hair so you have to vacuum the VACUUM!!!!
I am a regular person with dogs and kids in and out of my house all day. This particular vacuum creates more work for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sniffs Out Dog-Hair & Low-Lying Dust Bunnies,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)Just got this last week and I really love it. It's really effective at getting ingrained dog hair out of the rugs, getting into dark corners, and ferreting dust bunnies out from under the furniture. For the DC39 to be effective, you need to stand back and let it have its head. At first, I was using it at too steep an angle and trying to actively clean (putting my back into it). The turbo brush was hopping on the carpet and not getting up all the dog hair. Once I stood back and just let the turbo brush have at it, I was really amazed at how much hair I got up. There are some pluses and minuses, but overall I'm impressed.
On the plus side:
It is lightweight and easy to lift. I wanted a vacuum that I could take up and down stairs easily - our upright is too heavy and big for me to carry around without a lot of effort. The DC39 can be carried with one (slightly arthritic) hand.
It's nimble. The ball-shaped canister follows you around like a little shadow, swiveling around furniture and gliding behind without you having to do much. It's a real change from the old canisters, where you had to yank them along and pick them up to turn around. You forget that this one is there at all.
The performance is brilliant, especially if you have dogs. We have some polyester rugs (never a good combination with dog-hair). The carpet turbo brush got just about every hair out of the rug, with no bending or hard work. It even got really close to the edges, picking up stuff that had been annoying me for weeks.
It's quiet. Like a little spaniel, sniffing at your heels. OK, I exaggerate. But it's a LOT quieter than our old upright (a Dyson DC07).
It perches on stairs easily. This is where the mini turbine tool comes into its own - I hate vacuuming stairs, because the dog-hair gets so embedded in the carpet and because the upright hose pulls, making it hard work. This made doing the stairs a much easier and quicker job.
It's compact overall and the automatic cord rewind is a nice touch. Makes it much easier to store.
On the minus side:
The dust canister is smaller than on the uprights. This is obviously a compromise to make the canister small enough to maneuver. If you have multiple pets, you'll probably need to empty it 2-3 times in cleaning the house. I vacuumed around 200 sq. ft. of carpet & hard floors and it was full. But we do have two very sheddy dogs ... and I was getting up a lot of dust from corners I could not get at before.
The turbo brush is relatively small (depth-wise) so it's not so good on uneven surfaces. You have to kick the edges of throw-rugs back, to clean the place where they meet the rug underneath.
You have to stand back, with the wand at a fairly low angle for the turbo brush to work best. This may not work well for tall people. I'm 5'7" and OK, but my 6'2" husband has to bend slightly. It's not unusable - he said it was quite comfortable - but if you're tall, try it out at a store first.
The tradeoff for the shallow angle of use is that you can get the brush under low furniture. Which is so worth it - I got at places and dust bunnies that hadn't been cleaned for months (!). This is my third Dyson since around 1990 (in the UK) - they are so much better and longer-lived than other brands. Our Dyson DC07 upright has lasted since 2003 (at least), whereas we went through a Eureka and a Hoover in the previous 5 years. The DC07 is still going strong, but I'm getting arthritic, so I wanted something that was easier to lug upstairs. I also wanted a vacuum that would reach under the bed and get into tight spaces. The DC39 is just what I wanted to tackle all the really *difficult* cleaning jobs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does the job but...,
This review is from: Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.)The Dyson does it's job in terms of having a powerful suction.
It's also awesome that it is transparent so you know when you have to empty it.
However there are some flaws to the design:
The fingertip control which switches the brush bar off for delicate rugs and hard floors, and switches it on for high pick-up on carpets does not work all the time.
I have to keep pressing it and after 6 times of pressing it finally it stops spinning.
It gets annoying after the 3rd attempt.
Also, mine came a little damaged.
However it wasn't fatal to the point that I had to return it.
Not only that but the design of having the power button on the body is a little dumb.
It would be ideal if you can turn it on or off on the handle but you have to go back to the body to turn it off.
Also the hatch where you're supposed to connect the neck to the body is very hard to get.
You have to actually sit down and look at both sides to make sure it's aligned perfectly so it will grasp the nozzle.
That becomes annoying and takes away from the experience of vaccuming.
