Product Description

DC40 Multi floor is a lightweight Dyson Ball upright vacuum cleaner for every floor type. The machine’s cleaner head has an active base place, which self-adjusts automatically for optimal contact with all floor types. On hard floors the base plate lowers to create an efficient seal, and the brush bar lifts clear off the floor to protect delicate surfaces. On carpet, the base plate rises and the brush bar lowers for optimum bristle penetration- removing ground-in dirt and pet hair from different depths of carpet pile. And because the cleaner head adjusts automatically, there are no fiddly dials and you don’t need to bend down to make adjustments.

Dyson cyclones capture more dirt than any other cyclone. DC40 Multi floor has Radial Root Cyclone technology with remodeled airflows to maximize suction power. DC40 Multi floor also has patented Ball technology. It turns on the spot, which allows you to maneuver more easily around obstacles and into awkward spaces. And because the motor and other key components are located inside the ball, the machine has a lower center of gravity- making it even easier to steer.

Patented Dyson Technology

New Radial Root Cyclone Technology Ordinary vacuum cleaners rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. As you use them, the tiny holes in the bag clog up with particles of dust. This restricts the flow of air, so the vacuum cleaner loses suction. Dyson vacuum cleaners don’t rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. They use cyclone technology, which spins the air at incredibly high speeds. The cyclones inside a Dyson vacuum cleaner generate centrifugal forces many thousands of times the force of gravity. Dust, dirt and pet hair are flung out of the airflow and straight into the bin. No bag. No loss of suction.
Dyson has been continually refining cyclone technology since inventing it more than 20 years ago. DC40 Multi floor has new Radial Root Cyclone technology. Reconfigured air channels and improved flow efficiency reduce turbulence and preserve air pressure, so that the inner cyclones can extract more microscopic particles. These refinements help remove more dirt, dust, allergens and pet hair for the airflow.

Ball Technology to Help You Steer with Ease Dyson Ball upright vacuum cleaners use patented Ball technology to overcome the steering limitations of fixed wheels. They ride on a ball, which turns on the spot so you can steer with ease, changing direction with just a turn of the wrist.

The ball itself is made of glass-reinforced polypropylene- the same material used in the manufacture of car dashboards. It combines high impact strength with the resistance to distortion. The ball also holds the heaviest component, (the motor), positioned towards the base for a lower center of gravity and greater stability.

Features

Self-adjusting cleaner head: DC40 Multi floor has an active base plate. It creates the optimal cleaner head contact for every floor type, reducing air leaks and retaining suction power on all floor types- wood, carpet, vinyl and tile.

Instant release wand: DC40 Multi floor has an instant release, long reach wand for cleaning stairs and awkward areas- it stretches up to 5 times in length. There are no separate parts to assemble.

Extra tools: DC40 Multi floor comes with a Combination tool and a Stair tool. The Combination tool has a debris nozzle that converts to a brush tool for dusting. The Stair tool removes dirt and dust from corners and against vertical edges of stairs.

Approved for allergy sufferers: All new Dyson upright and canister vacuums are certified asthma & allergy friendly by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America. Dyson cyclones capture microscopic particles down to 0.5 microns in size, including pollen, mold and bacteria.

No extra costs: DC40 Multi floor comes with a 5 year warranty - parts and labor guaranteed by Dyson.

UPDATE (10/12/2013): Dyson has changed the name of the DC40 (name change only, no change to the specs) and has posted the newly named DC40 Origin on the following Amazon page: Dyson DC40 Origin Upright Vacuum Cleaner. The price of the DC40 fluctuates often and Amazon, on occasion, drops the price or offers Amazon Gift Cards for purchasing the newly named model. If you are planning on purchasing the DC40, make sure to check the new listing to see if you can get a better deal.

=========================

So I took the plunge and bought my first Dyson. I went with the Dyson DC40 and ordered it from Amazon a couple of days after it came out for $400 (20% off Mother's Day special). I don't have any pets, so I didn't think I needed to pay the extra for the Animal version. It was only $50 dollars more than the previous model DC25 and had the new Dyson Radial Root Cyclone technology and a couple of other new features. I figured, for $50, I might as well have the latest technology and it has been around for a few months in the DC41 Animal, so it isn't their first try at it.

Just for some background, I'm upgrading from an old Hoover Windtunnel bagless upright vacuum. I have never really been that happy with it. It probably cost $300 when I bought it and it does an ok job, but loses suction after only a few minutes of vacuuming unless you keep emptying the bin and buying new filters. After the original cost of the old vacuum plus a few filters, all of the sudden a Dyson doesn't seem that expensive anymore.

First Impression - Right out of the box, the thing looks impressive. It is small and sleek and it was quick and easy to put together.

I have scoffed at my friends who spend way to much money on Dysons because they're just cute and trendy but I went to the store the other day to pickup yet another vacuum cleaner bag and somehow came home with the Dyson DC40 Ball Upright. First let me say that I hate upright vacuum cleaners. We have one and it is heavy, I can't do stairs, I can't carry it easily from upstairs to down, etc. It can't clean under anything because it's too big. It is a decent vacuum cleaner that we spent over $300 so I figure it cleans pretty well but I don't vacuum much because it's such an ordeal to use.

So home I come with a $500 Dyson upright chosen because its carpet beater is belt driven (my requirement) and because it was surprisingly light. I was ready for hubby to flip out over the price but we use it on a recently vacuumed floor. First, it is so light, it barely feels like you're doing anything or that it's even sucking that hard. But up comes the most amazing quantity of dust and fur I've ever seen. So it goes, room after room. The kids even use it with ease. I've never liked bagless because dust flies everywhere and they are a pain to empty. Not this one - no dust whatsoever and no smell - I always get an old dusty smell when I use my bagged upright.

And emptying it is so so so easy. Just shove it deep into the trash can, push the button so the flap drops open and shake it around. It's so lightweight and maneuverable I can easily vacuum around curves, slip it in between furniture legs and under stuff. It's even light enough that I can do the stairs with it. This is a truly amazing vacuum cleaner. I love that all the tools have a place on board (I never know where my crevice tool is) and it is very easy to switch to the tools.

Just purchased this elsewhere as I had a 30% off coupon. The vacuum seems to be very well engineered and though the parts are plastic, they seem durable. The suction is great on both carpet and bare floors. I have two issues with the vacuum that may result in my returning it. If you try to pick up a small bead, or other object with the vacuum it just pushes it forward. You can't tip the head up to get the piece on the rebound as well. To pick up something higher than a mm (1/8")you have to physically lift the entire vacuum up and drop it on the item. The second issue is with the hose/wand. It is extremely tight and if you don't have something to stop the vacuum from rolling, it will tip over when you try to clean stairs. It is also very difficult to use for dusting, as the suction head is at the end of about four feet of solid tubing, and the hose is so tight and fights you to go back to it's original position. You can not dust a flat surface over your head without standing way back and reaching up.

I don't expect a vacuum to do everything. It is frustrating however to have peanuts, beads, and even smaller items not get picked up by this thing. Probably a trade-off for the great suction. Also you can not use it to dust many surfaces without a lot of awkward positioning and extra effort.

Five years ago, I bought an Electrolux canister vacuum (model EL 7055A) after agonizing about wanting a Dyson. Dyson seemed to be a lot about marketing and flash, so I was unsure about spending so much money on something that maybe just looks pretty. The Electrolux had very good reviews in allergy/asthma sufferer forums regarding its performance and HEPA filter, so I went with the Electrolux instead.

Fast forward 5 years. I was in need of a new vacuum cleaner. The Electrolux sucked well and has still not lost suction, but the controls were poorly designed and they became non-functional within the first year, so I have not been able to control any of the settings (carpet height adjustor, suction power, etc.). I was also getting tired of its heavy weight. I decided to spend the big bucks on a Dyson.

I looked online and immediately became confused at the differences between all the Dyson models. Just reading the descriptions was not enough for me to discern any huge difference between the models. All I wanted was a vacuum cleaner that sucks well. I wasn't looking for a lot of bells and whistles, so the small differences in the models were lost on me.

So I decided to go to Best Buy and see them out of the box. I'm glad to have looked at the different Dyson models side by side. I was primarily looking at the DC41, DC40, and DC33. Out of the 3 models, I was immediately drawn to the DC40 because of its smaller size and lighter weight compared to the DC41 and DC33.

I've been using it for 2 months now, and I am happy with both performance and maneuverability. After I opened up the Dyson box, I first vacuumed with my Electrolux, then vacuumed again with the DC40. The Dyson did not pick up too much more dust.
