Before this plane, The Beast was my favorite. This flies like it, but is a lot more "locked in" as the people on the boards say. Because it is 3D (in flying that means is can stay in the air solely by the power of the motor), you can take off, go vertical and be above 100 feet in a few seconds. Rolls, loops, and even hovering in place all feel natural. I feel in control the whole time I am flying it. The AS3X keeps the flight smooth in even moderate winds. My only issue with it is the landing gear. It took me a few tries to keep it on the wheels and I ended up doing nose plants, but the only damage was a little rash on the nose. You can see my maiden flight and first two horrible landings on YouTube. Just search for "yak 54 180 rough landings".

I have only been flying about a year and love this plane, but my friends who have been flying for decades and people at the flying clubs all are impressed with the Yak 54 180 as well. If you are a real beginner, this is not the plane for you. But if you have some good 4 channel experience and like the bigger foamy planes, then this is a great addition to your collection.

I have flown a bunch of park flyers and they were prone to being buffeted in the wind and were very slippery to control... So I was very skeptical about the UMX series, all I can say is wow ! I have never had a plane that just flew and required ZERO trim, just a joy to fly, on my first battery I'd normally being getting comfortable but I had this into aerobatics straight away, I even did some hovering which I have never done before (but I am a heli pilot) and that was easy with this plane.

Its easy to bring in for landings flys nice and slow, its going to take you a handful of times to get it to land nice so it doesn't tip on its nose.

The only negative about this plane is that it gives you so much confidence you start to try new things and take risks, so watch out for the ground !

I liked it so much I just ordered the UMX beast, for some biplane fun !

The UMX Yak is FAST. I am a strong intermediate flier, (So I say) but I find the speed a little intimidating. I fly in and area about 350 by 500 feet and I often use it all. It will cruise around nicely at 3/4 throttle and let me get my breath back, but for aerobatics you need to man up and hit the gas. It is very stable and smooth. Inverted flight is the same as upright. Loops are pretty large. It rolls like a power drill. Aileron turns are a thing of beauty. In flat turns it likes to lean a bit and also dive. It takes some getting used to. I almost always just use the ailerons. The battery that comes with it gives a good 4 minute flight. My knees are shaking after that.
I prefer Hyperion 2s 240 mah batteries. I get good 6 minute flights with these. The little yak is almost unaffected by light breeze. It is easily the best of all my micros in breezy conditions. The only thing I don't like is the landing gear is too far back. ( This true in every micro RTF I have seen. ) Even on pavement it tends to nose over. On grass it flips over almost every time. I have flown it 25 times and had no trouble except a little rash on the bottom of the cowl from nosing over and I did break one of the SFG in a normal landing. a drop of foam safe CA and a shot of foam safe kicker and it is as good as new. Buy this plane now, but make sure you have enough room to fly! Learn on something a little slower first. The AS3Xtra is sweet to learn aerobatics.

I have several RC aircraft, but finding adequate open space to fly is a challenge. I fell in love with the Pluma on my RealFlight simulator because of its ability to spin on any axis, but I didn't want to build it from a kit, including finding ALL the required non-airframe components. But, I also didn't want to add to my existing collection of transmitters. I bound the UMX Yak 54 to my Spektrum '5e transmitter in seconds -a first for me. I found the Yak very fast; a football field-sized space immediately seems small. It handles moderate wind with ease. I hand launched it and landed it in a stubble field without damage.
