Editorial Reviews

Format: Vinyl LP album. Fontana Records, UK release from 1975. French folk band playing Breton, Scottish and Welsh folk music. Laminated jacket front and back. 16 tracks. This LP was part of a large collection of folk music LPs from the estate of a retired music journalist who loved folk music. The majority of these LPs are traditional Celtic roots folk music, with many being psych folk rock. Many are original first or early pressings and in near mint or excellent condition, they appear to be little played or spare copies.

At first listen I found E Langonned to be very ethnic sounding celtic music, and wasn't sure I would like it much, but it very quickly grew on me. If you liked "Renaissance of the Celtic Harp", (and who doesn't?) you may find E Langonned less accessible, but give it a few listens and like me you'll be captivated by the lilting melodies and amazing vocals. Some of the songs are only vocals but are absolutely stunning in mood and character. Others are accompanied by celtic harp, guitar and wind instruments. There is also nice instrumental tracks with solo harp and a wonderful bagpipe ensemble.
Overall the cd is moody, laid back and otherworldly, and if you want to continue your journey into the heart of celtic folk music there is no better choice than the Breton master, Alan Stivell.

Alan Stivell is the person many think of when they think of traditional Breton music. He does play assorted instruments, harp, highland pipes, etc., but is also a Celtic singer with a pan-Celtic repertoire. This is perhaps his most soulful recording, and although hard to find now it is my favorite of my many, many Stivell recordings. Turn it up loud, sip a little uisque beatha and visit your Celtic roots!
