Editorial Reviews

Review

"Effective training is key to preparing our workforce for the demands and challenges of the global economy. This book highlights the fact that, even on a limited budget, there are many tools available online that will increase efficiency and improve productivity in businesses, government agencies, and other organizations."
-- Michael F. Easley, governor, State of North Carolina

"I adore bargains and this book points the way to online learning bargains that help folks learn! Others would have you think you need expensive vendors and infrastructure from the get-go, but Jane Bozarth shows you how to get started on a shoestring."
-- Patti Shank, managing partner, Learning Peaks, and coauthor, Making Sense of Online Learning

"Jane Bozarth finally provides us a guide to understanding what e-learning technologies can do for us¾without breaking the bank. The realization that you can do e-learning for pennies per participant shows us what we should have always known: the focus isn’t the technology, it’s the learning."
-- Jennifer Hofmann, founder, InSync Training, and author, Live and Online!

"e-Learning Solutions on a Shoestring should be required reading for any organization considering an e-learning program. Jane Bozarth has done much of the groundwork for us by reviewing and prioritizing resources and filling her book full of ways to save money—a tremendously practical and useful guide."
-- Colleen O’Connor Grochowski, assistant dean for curriculum development, Duke University School of Medicine

"Jane Bozarth’s straight-shooting, can-do style gives hope and encouragement to those left out in the cold by high development costs. Proving that quality e-learning solutions are within reach, e-Learning on a Shoestring is the real deal for organizations trying to work with few or no resources."
-- Nancy Gustafson, manager, organization effectiveness, First Citizens Bank, Raleigh, North Carolina

"If you are starting to develop a plan for the e-learning future, I can’t think of a better place to begin than with this book. It provides the nuts-and-bolts tools that could change any training organization dramatically and for the better."
-- Kyle Hoffman, senior project manager, Institute for Human Services

More About the Author

A decade ago I moved from the world of traditional instruction to designing and facilitating both asychronous and synchronous training. Now that technology -- and learner access to it -- has finally caught up with possibilities, my interests have expanded to the world of social media tools to support and extend the work of the workplace training practitioner.

I have an M.Ed. in Training & Development/Technology in Training and a doctorate in Adult Education. (My dissertation, on workplace social learning/communities of practice, is available free via a Google search). I enjoy writing, and in addition to my books I was, for 10 years, a member of "Training Magazine"'s book review team and now write book reviews and a monthly column, "Nuts and Bolts" for the eLearning Guild's online "Learning Solutions Magazine".

You can find me "live" most anytime on Twitter @janebozarth and almost always on Thursday evenings as one of the moderators of the popular #lrnchat sessions. My Twitter profile describes me as a feral learner, positive deviant, and World's Oldest Millenial.

I also drive too fast.

The chronically under-funded HR department needs E-Learning Solutions On A Shoestring: Help For The Chronically Underfunded Trainer: its focus is how to incorporate e-learning into a company at minimal cost, and provides chapters on products, incorporation tools, and workplace strategies. Chapters cover all the resources available for this purpose, from creating games and simulation learning tools to creating low-cost collaboration and bartering for resources. An outstanding business resource.

This book is a great resource for the working trainer who doesn't want or need to spend thousands of dollars for training when the tools they have will do the job just as well. Thanks to Ms. Bozarth's advice, I have been able to create great training that is cost-effective and works even better than the more expensive solutions.

This book spends a lot of time saying that this or that can be done for $0. Unfortunately e-learning is not only a function of content. The author gives some excellent examples of inexpensive and memorable e-leaning projects developed at minimum cost but then also includes items which should be called e-reference rather than e-learning. Perhaps, searching a Word or PDF document for a particular term, falls within her preferred definition of e-learning which is "anything designed to improve work performance delivered by any electronic means" but so also would threatening emails and abusive telephone calls. Effective e-leaning requires a cocktail of the memorable and the motivational and is unlikely to be just anything. However a lot of good resources and references but just a tad too much on the use of Word, Power Point (and similar) and nothing at all on inexpensive programs like Captivate
