5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Stephen J. Hall on July 14, 2011
I have had this plane for three weeks now and fly it early in the morning. I have flown in 10 mph wind. Setup CG to 3 3/8" and I am using 2200 mah 11.1v LIPO. I have been flying foam park size RC airplanes for about four months. What I like about the Leader 480 my first balsa plywood RC plane is that it is more durable than the foam planes I have been flying. The tricycle landing gear on the Leader 480 can take a beating, I've bounced the plan on landings as I was learning how to land smoother. I bounced so hard on the nose landing wheel it put a black mark on the under side of the plane but there was no damage. If I landed one of my foam planes like that it would of broken in many peaces. I am landing the plane consistently smoother now as I touch down on the street my landing strip. I have not tried landing the plane in the grass but with these size wheels it should not be a problem as long as the grass is mowed. I am using the 480 size motor as recommended. I have used both 12x6 APC and 11x7 APC props and recommend the 11x7 if you are learning to land otherwise there a tendency to take the tip off the prop on the 12x6, I have gone through about six 12x6 props before I switched to 11x7 because it has more ground clearance. I have to use a little more throttle but the motor is not working as hard, 40 amp ESC and motor barely warm when I land. The plane is stable and durable for practicing landing. Loops, rolls flying inverted this plane has no problem handling it. During assembly I notice that the rudder hinges were miss aligned to the bottom of the rudder when it should be position to the top of the rudder. It was easy fix.Read more ›

This is a replacement for one that I've been flying for two or three years. It is a good step up from basic trainers to beginning aerobatics and general fun flying.

I've been flying for 4 years now, and usually avoid ARFs (Almost-Ready to -Fly). But I was looking for a smaller, electric pattern type plane that I could use to practice with and bought this one. I'm glad I did, as it flies like it's on rails. Goes exactly where you point it, it has no bad flying habits that I've found. And it lands as gently as a trainer.

Very well constructed, and easy to assemble. It's now my favorite plane to fly at the field.

The only thing I'd recommend is to add slightly larger wheels if you're flying off of a grass field, as the stock wheels are a little small.

Hope this helps!

Really nice RC model. Used a elflite 480 1020kv motor, 45amp esc and 9gram digital servos. Simple build for the experienced builder and challenging for the biginner. Plan on using a 3s 3000mah battery. Have not got the chance to fly it due to the weather but ran the motor a few times and it has great pull. I think she will be a wonderful experience to fly.
