It seems that getting a hold of one of these at list price on Amazon is not an easy thing to do (at the time of this writing), so after looking around on the web I've managed to get one (for a reasonable $129 shipped) from a FiiO authorized dealer: Sonic-Electronix. Now, I should start with a disclaimer: In general I don't like (spending money on) portable hi-fi audio gear, and that for two reasons: (1) Portable gear is often resource limited (space, power, etc.) and the designs involve all kinds of compromises (power vs. accuracy, size vs. mechanical durability, etc.) and (2) Listening to music on the go, in transit (a car, bus, train, plane, etc.) or any other public places is often marred by so many other spurious noises that the advantages of using hi-fi audio gear are often negated. Nevertheless, I needed a good headphone amp with some bass-boost capability for home use (to improve the sound of the Sennheiser HD-598 headphones when used with the Onkyo C7030 cd-player) and none of the desktop amps in the $150-300 range have that (bass-boost) feature. So, after looking at some of the portable/transportable amps out there (from JDS-Labs, C&C, Fiio, iBasso, Leckerton, Matrix, SMSL, Little-Dot, Meier, MicroShar, etc.) I decided to try this new offering from FiiO: E12 - The Mont Blanc.

Bulid quality: The Fiio E12 is encased in a machined aluminum box (about the size of a smartphone) with a brushed, black finish. On it, the adornments are fairly minimal: a semi-recessed volume knob that doubles as on/off switch, two 3.5mm jacks (in/out), and a bunch of recessed switches: voltage gain (0dB, and 16dB or 6.4x), a cross-feed (to change the feel of the sound stage), the bass-boost, and a micro-B USB plug for charging.

This is Fiio's flagship portable amp. I suppose it's pricey for a portable but well worth it. Super quiet with no audible distortion or hiss. I thought my headphones sounded just fine before I got this amp. I was playing them directly from an Ipod, laptops, and a pc with very good volume and sound quality(or so I thought). My 3 headphones( Sennheiser HD380 Pro, Audio Technica ath-m50, and Audio Technica ath-a900x) all have low impedance values so I thought I didn't need a seperate amp. Man, was I wrong. All three benefitted immensely from adding this amp. Improved detail, low end bass, and mids really come alive. The vocals even sound more natural now. You will absolutely not regret getting this amp.

This amp is a great value. Fiio makes solid, budget conscious products for all audio enthusiasts and the E12 certainly doesn't disappoint.

The build is outstanding and probably the best I've seen come out of the Fiio labs. Its a rock solid aluminum body, reinforced audio jacks, a volume knob that wont break anytime soon, while still maintaining an elegant design with it's tapered edges. It has a nice heft to it, in a good way. Almost makes me feel comfortable with the fact that I might drop it one day. I think it can take it, no problem.

The bass boost, although very slight, is impressive. Definitely not "bloated" like the E11, the way some people might feel. The background noise is almost non-existent, even with IEMs. The dual OPAMP makes for some very clean audio reproduction. Is it portable?? Yes and no. But I think with the amount of upgrades that were made to the E11, the size is more than acceptable.

Battery life?? It ran for well over 12 hours at about 80% volume burning in a pair of headphones with ease. The micro usb charging port is a big bonus since that is the standard now.

Also, this thing is POWERFUL. Able do drive some very demanding headphones, such as my Beyerdynamics, with ease.

My advice: Buy it. Its a great value. Don't fall into the idea that you need a ridiculously expensive amp for good sound quality. If you own headphones ranging in price of $80-$300 like I do, then this falls nicely into that price range for a portable amp.

I am a busy person. I bought a lot of audio and video devices from Amazon and liked them, but didn't bother to write a positive review because I have been very busy lately. But with this product, after using it for two months, I am compelled to share my review with potentials buyers.
The most valuable upgrades are:
1. Sound - more powerful and vivid sound than E11. E11 sounds great already. But E12 sounds superbly. I am using AKG 702, Beyerdynamic 770, 880, 990, Sennheiser PXC 450, HD 598. I listen to rock, metal and pop. This sound upgrade truly makes a top-notch headphone amp with iPod touch for those headphones. To use an iPod touch 30 pin to 3.5 mm cable to connect the two devices is necessary to maximize the sound potential of both devices. It doesn't have to be the FiiO proprietary one. A generic one is fine. I recommend using the Y-shape cable with a 3.5 mm output and and a USB male, which allows you to charge your iPod while using.
2. Using while charging - E11 doesn't allow you to do that. But with E12, you can do it. It allows you to listen to the music without being interrupted.
3. Build quality - much better build quality than the E11. The entire thing is sealed. It feels as sturdy as a military equipment. It looks and feels very stylish and high-class.
4. Has a battery weakening indicator, which will light up to alert you that the battery will run out soon so you can charge the amp before your music suddenly dies while you are listening.
5. Use standard micro-A to Micro-B charging cable, which is more compatible with other mobile devices such as smart phones. You would avoid keeping many different types of USB charging cables in your bag.
Yes, there is a significant price increase over the E11. But based on the upgrades listed above, I think the price increase is justified. And I don't want to go back to use the E11 anymore.
