Why You Need E3 Spark Plugs As the designated catalyst for the ignition of fuel in gasoline powered cars, trucks, motorcycles and small engines, spark plugs are a small, but constant factor in the workings of the vast majority of motorists on the road. Second, the physical features of the electrode project further forward into the combustion chamber. The exceptional performance of the E3 spark plug starts with the unique open architecture of the E3 electrode. The design forces air gap discharges, creates the preferred edge-to-edge spark path, allows free replenishment of the spark zone with a fresh fuel/air charge, and exposes the flame front more directly to the piston head than other plug designs.Sparks naturally follow edge-paths as they leave an object. The E3 design presents multiple sharp edges to the center electrode. Sparks flow between these edges at lower voltages, facilitating easier discharge than standard designs. I purchased these plugs to use in my 98 Saturn SL2. The first thing to do is inspect the plugs before installing them. The finished product isn't the best. The threads on one of the plugs had some burrs on it that concerned me to the point where I decided to dress it with a file first before installing it. If not, it could've cross threaded the head which would have been disastrous!!!

The plugs come already gapped and aren't adjustable. There were some variances in the gaps. Since the variations were so slight, I felt it would not be an issue and decided to install them as is.

I debated on whether or not to use anti seize and eventually decided against it. The website for the spark plug doesn't really recommend it. It says that the threads are nickel plated which help to resist seizing and galling. Even though the plugs are warrantied for 5 yrs./100k miles, I don't plan on leaving them in there that long.
If you do plan on leaving the plugs in for a long time, anti seize would probably be a good idea. Don't forget to adjust the torque values if you decide to use anti seize.

I just installed the plugs yesterday. The car seems to start up faster and has more pep when you hit the throttle. The old plugs that were removed were relatively new (5,000 miles on them) and in good condition so I don't think the improvements were a matter of worn plugs being replaced with new plugs. Even so, those things are hard to measure and open to the power of suggestion. The real test will be the miles per gallon, which I will be evaluating and reporting on after driving for approx. one month.

Update: It's one month and 1,200 miles later and the numbers are in.
First, some driving impressions. The car does run smoother and has more power. The car maintains 65 mph on the freeway with less effort than it used to take. Before, I could feel the engine "working" to maintain 65 mph. Now it cruises at 65 and I need to keep an eye on the speedometer.

Now the good stuff. My SL2 averaged 25.75 mpg versus 23.02 mpg for the month prior to installing the E3 spark plugs. I have to admit that because of the increased performance, my foot has been heavier on the gas pedal than normal so the mileage could possibly have been even a little better. All in all, I would say these spark plugs are a worth while purchase that will eventually pay for themselves.

I installed these in my 1999 Altima. I can't say I saw an improvement in fuel economy, but then again I drive mostly city, and Nissan's KA24DE 2.4L is just awful in the city. Definitely a little more power though. Tossed in a low restriction Spectre air-filter as well, and I'm satisfied. 100,000 mile warranty is reason enough to purchase a 6$ plug.

A few notes though -

1- Use anti-seize compound. Seriously, you'll never get them out after anything near 100K miles.
2- Don't even try to gap them. You're not supposed to, and you'll only damage them.
3- Torque to spec. You can't just bangs plugs in with a socket wrench.
4- Reboot your ECU to wipe the fuel maps. Disconnect your battery for 15 minutes so your engine computer recalibrates from baseline.
4a- WARNING - this can be a problem if you have one of those theft proof radios; they stop working if you disconnect the battery for an extended period. Mostly a problem on Volkswagon, and in cars with expensive aftermarket stereos.
5- Don't expect these plugs to resolve serious mechanical problems. They aren't magic. If you car/truck runs bad, it will continue to run bad.

Some cars (mostly Subaru) will throw "service engine" codes if you use any kind of non-standard plug. If you get a warning light, you'd better go back to one of the manufacturer recommended plugs.

I bought a set of eight plugs for my 2007 Dodge Ram 4.7L. Everything was fine for the first 6 hours then I had a misfire on one of the plugs. I did some troubleshooting, removed and reseated all the ignition coils and still couldn't get the misfire to go away. I took it to the nearest Car X for service thinking I screwed something up. After two hours on the diagnostic machine, it turned out to be a bad plug which cost me $70 to fix. This is the FIRST plug I ever had go bad after 6 hours. I am waiting for the other ones to go bad and cost me even more. Not very impressed so far.
