Book Description

April 12, 2011

Diets are made to go “on” and “off of”, and if you’re like most people—who want to be fit, lean, alert and healthy—you don’t want to diet.  You want to eat naturally and normally, in a way that helps you have the body and lifestyle you deserve to enjoy.  In EAT, Dr. Ian Smith has created a blueprint for you.  It’s a flexible and intelligent plan you can follow every day, in every situation—eating out, working late, traveling, cooking for the holidays—and that will urge your body to perform at its peak. You’ll drop any excess pounds you need to lose.   You won’t worry about what you “can” and “can’t” eat, but will listen to yourself and eat smart.

Dr. Ian’s Ten Simple Rules for Good Eating tell you what the experts know:

--Follow the Rainbow: if you eat color, you’re getting vitamins and minerals in the right package
--Carb Heaven: don’t ban carbohydrates—or any nutrient group!
--The Whole Truth About Whole Grains: they may not be what you think they are, and you should be eating them all the time
--Feel Full Fiber: it’s magic at every meal
--Protein Bonanza: all proteins aren’t equal
--Spicetopia: 5 of the tastiest and healthiest spices in the world
--Size Matters:  how to portion, and secret calories you don’t know about
--You are What You Drink: the miracle liquid and drinks that can wash out good eating
--Unearthing the Organic Truth: it’s not always healthier
--The Power of Snacks: they can help you lose weight!

Cut to the chase with Dr. Ian’s EAT Plan at the end of each chapter, or become your own expert by reading from start to finish.  Either way, EAT is not about denial.  It’s about permission….to live, to fuel your strong body, to eat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Right to the Point! April 16, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am not one to read a nutrition book, but after seeing the doctor talk about the book on Rachael Ray, I decided to give it a try. I HIGHLY recommend this book, if you're not one that gets into all the scientific data and jargon that tends to fill so many of the nutrition books; If you want a book that just gets to the basic points of healthy eating that you might not know, and gives you a concise, quick summary of how to achieve healthy eating goals, then this is THE BOOK! I couldn't believe how informative it was without all the extra junk that nobody understands or pays attention to. This is practical life application information on how to eat better. With simple food lists summarizing whats at the top of the list in terms of the healthiest choices to make and it's all the stuff you really need to pay attention to at the grocery store and everyday stuff. This book was very motivational and encouraging to get me and my family started on healthier eating choices. And I understand better the WHY's of many topics such as carbs/whole grains/proteins/etc. that I just thought I knew before. This book is just simply good for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, some sanity. April 19, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Oh, I'm an expert on this...I've read every new diet book to come out for many years. If reading could fix weight problems, I'd be Aphrodite, LOL. But, this book contains all the info I need to have plenty to eat while coming to my ideal weight and prolonging my life. The reason I gave four instead of five stars is that a page suggesting food amounts for a single day would have been helpful. I understand that Dr.Smith wanted to avoid prescribing any kind of regimented meals, but, it was hard to imagine exactly how much would constitute a full day, including snacks. He did offer wonderful portion-size images, actual photographs, to help people see how much IS an actual portion of food. Most restaurant plates come with about 3 times as much food as anyone needs to eat at a meal in order to feel satiated. But, I have just tossed all my old "diet" books, the ideas in "Eat" are exactly what I need to end my yo-yo syndrome. I knew much of this cutting-edge food info, but it was very useful to see it all in one source.

5.0 out of 5 stars EAT, simplistic intellegence at it best... April 21, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I particularily enjoyed this book as it was straight and to the point, not a lot of wasted words trying to get me to understand what I already know: I need to eat healthy and it would be nice to lose 20 pounds while I'm at it. I appreciated the "quick find" tables, and I appreciated the support from his peers (i.e., this is not a book of opinions by the author to manipulate our minds) and most of all, the proper servings sizes demonstrating how far off track many of us have unknowingly gotten. Great read, great reference to keep on hand.
