Simply a fabulous shoe. Extremely well-built, with solid structure and cushioning that one can adjust by selecting either a softer insert or a harder one. The leather is plush but strong, with perforations for increased air-flow. The sole is durable, but slightly tackier than ecco's other recent athletic soles, so there's better grip on slick or wet surfaces. Certainly one of the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. They stood up perfectly on a recent European vacation where I walked several miles a day on sidewalks, streets, cobblestones, dirt and rock paths, and they kept me comfortable standing and walking slowly through all those museums. They were also great on the trails and through the parks and on numerous hikes. Perhaps the other reviewers here were expecting a softer, more slipper like shoe. This is not that. This is made for rigorous use. I've had my pair for three years, longer than I've kept any other athletic shoe I've owned. They are so gorgeous, so well-designed, with such high quality materials that I just can't give them up. They're scuffed and getting harder to clean, and the cushioning has become compressed, but I think I'll buy some thin gel pads and see if I can't keep them alive a little longer. Thanks to ecco for making these. They go in the hall of fame along with the Track IIs.

I have had other shoes from Ecco, which common points are quality and comfort, but the Dakota Walking model I feel very uncomfortable while I am walking. I am very disappointed with this model.

These shoes are heavy, hot and rub your toes. A very poor shoe for walking!

I am going to Europe this summer and will be doing a lot of walking over cobblestones and the like. I have tested my new Eccos over rough ground and believe they will an excellent choice for my trip. As I am traveling light they will be my only shoes except for a pair of Birkenstocks.
