Book Description

August 15, 2005
ECHELON, Somebody's Listening is a factually-based thriller that tells details of recently revealed and formerly highly classified 21st Century eavesdropping methods. The story begins the day the Patriot Act is signed--the first day the CIA and FBI are allowed to sit side-by-side eavesdropping. It is the story of three segments of society--the CIA/FBI, municipal law enforcement and citizens ensnared by CIA/FBI eavesdropping--as they respond to a surprise act of terror at the Miami International Airport. It's a frantic chase that culminates in a stunning conclusion in Washington, D.C.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Word Association is proud that Mr. O'Neill's book has been so well-received. It has an important real-life message for our times, presented as thrilling fiction. But, given Mr. O'Neill's breadth of knowledge and experience in the realm of official eavesdropping, readers will come away from this book with an entirely new view of their government, their world, and perhaps their own privacy.

If you savor stories set in Washington and elsewhere, whose characters you care about -- even when the tale turns repeatedly on a dime, and that you can't put down, buy this book.

It grabs like Tom Clancy, but brings you into the 21st Century. Hang on, though. You're in for a fast ride.

Jack O'Neill brilliantly tells a thrilling story revolving around real-life conflicts between the FBI and the CIA that we have all become more aware of since 9/11. Michael Stone, a CIA agent working at the FBI, uses Echelon intercepts and other electronic surveillance techniques to detect and track criminal, and possibly terrorist, activities. O'Neill's book puts us in touch with the real world of eavesdropping that surrounds everyone, and explains how its all done. The characters are vivid and intriguing, especially two women, Janet and Carolyn, who become ensnarled in the eavesdropping world. It makes you wonder: Is somebody listening to you? The story moves rapidly, and I had to keep turning the pages to find out what happened next. The denouement is dazzling. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes thrillers with a realistic, technological content.

4.0 out of 5 stars Movie Material, February 27, 2006
This review is from: ECHELON: Somebody's Listening (Paperback)
A fast paced book that is extremely timely. A good way to understand what is really happening with evesdropping and wiretapping. I could see this as an action thriller in the movies. I hope Jack O'Neill will do a screenplay.
