Eclectic Tarot Piatnik Wien, beautiful deck, January 23, 2008
This review is from: ECLECTIC TAROT CARDS (Cards)
Eclectic Tarot is a lovely mid-sized deck. Slightly difficult to shuffle in smaller hands, does have a nice smooth surface, and the cards are very good quality as you would expect from Piatnik.
This deck is by Austrian Josef Machynka, also the author of the Ibis Tarot (nicely done Egyptian theme). The Eclectic artwork is true to the name, obviously combines various traditions of tarot interpretation as well as Eastern and Numerologic symbolisms. I like the artwork, it is clean and soft, appearance is chalk pastel imagery. I can easily interpret the more traditional meanings in the Major Arcana cards. My one critique is the Minor Arcana, although the suit does have arranged iconic pips and relevant artwork, the cards are not fully illustrated as are other popular decks, like Ryder/Waite. Beginners may not find this an easy deck at first. The LWB does cover symbolism, but is completely without card image reference.
The card backs are one-way designs, so you can easily see when a card is laid in the reversed position- for those who read alternate meanings. Back of cards are dark, black with gold line-art in a stiff bi-lateral symbolic design that I don't think follows the face artwork. Simple hand-drawn line-art would have worked better, in a color or pastel. I really do like the backs, I just don't see the complement.
Overall, this is a great collectable deck. And for some intuitives, a useful and lovely tool for readings. If you take the time to study the deck I believe good interpretations can be revealed by readers of traditional type decks. I don't recommend this for an initial deck, but if you hold it and get a strong resonance, this may be the deck for you.
