Product Description

Style: AMD A6-5200

This is the newest ECS Mini-ITX motherboard, the KBN-I/D5200. It utilizes the new Kabini quad-core SoC (System on Chip). This integrates an AMD A6-5200 Quad Core APU with the Radeon HD 8400 graphics and DirectX 11 support. The central processing unit runs at a speed of 2.0 GHz, with a low TDP of 25W. The motherboard also features two DDR3-1600 slots, as well as one PCIe x16 slot, two SATA3 slots, and two Mini-PCIe slots (one full and one half length slot). External connectivity is handled by a legacy PS/2 port, a serial port, four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, a VGA port, Gigabit Ethernet and 6 channel HD audio support. With all this and included features like full Electrostatic Discharge Protection, HD Video playback and full Windows 8 support, the KBN-I is a great choice for affordable but capable small form factor systems.

I've loaded the board with linux (ubuntu) with no problem at all. I'm using it to run ZenPhoto, a photo sharing site which runs on top of Apache. It has more than enough CPU to house the site and it draws less than 25 watts. A great replacement for the 75 watt system I had been using. So if you want to drop power consumption and lower your carbon foot print it's hard to beat this board. I paired it with an solid state hard drive and it boots faster than any PC I've ever worked with, including the other two 4.0GHz quad core desktop systems II own. It boots in about 20 seconds if that.

Low power + 4 cores at 2Ghz. I'd been waiting for this board to come out and bought one to try immediately. The board is fast enough for any work and home PC work. Unless you're gaming or doing intensive graphics work, this board is as fast as more expensive systems. There is no reason to spend more for basic PC work.

This is the board I'm using to replace all XP PCs at the business I support, approx 60 PCs. SSD drive + windows 8 (which horrible gui aside, is a quick OS under the hood) makes for very fast systems. I don't foresee replacing any of these units until Windows 8 support ends in 2023. So far no problem with any of the boards.

The cons of this board are only 2 SATA ports and only 1 USB motherboard header. But ECS is the only manufacturer making a board with this CPU right now.

VGA output can't handle 1080p. Was also rather finicky with RAM. Had HDMI issues (display, audio crackle), and I contacted the vendor. They did respond, but they don't send the replies via email and you do it all through their site. Vendors who can't even use email aren't worth the hassle, so I sent it back to Amazon. Then I started looking for something better.

After some research, I got a high-end ASRock AM1 board and Kabini Athlon 5350 cpu instead. Better board specs overall, more reliable, and nearly $40 cheaper with the same CPU. I also got an ASRock board with an Intel Baytrail J1900 for a friend. Slightly less powerful, but half the wattage and less finicky. If you're getting a board with a CPU fan on it, don't get the embedded combo with the markup. Replaceable fans will always be better.

Honestly, I just got this because I didn't finish my research and thought I had to buy Kabini chips embedded. Before Kabini made it to the AM1 socketed platform, this might have made sense. Not anymore.

Installed Server 2012 R2, 16 GB of RAM and 240 GB SSD, and it flyes!

PROS:
This was the fastest install of an OS I've ever done.
*I build the system up very quickly with a 240 GB Mushkin SSD and 16 GB of Mushkin Blackline RAM (model 997123).
*I used Rufus (free) to create a bootable USB drive and was able to boot and install the OS.
*No WEI in Server 2012 (that I can find) but I can tell you it is very fast.
*It has two USB 3 ports on the rear I/O.

CONS:
*You can choose between a Legacy BIOS or UEFI and when selecting UEFI, I can't get back into the BIOS.
*In order to get back into the BIOS, I need to reset it by battery removal or jumpers.
*The manufacturer claims an impressive 32 GB yet when reading the fine print, it seems more like just 16 GB.
*Only two DIMM slots, two SATA ports, one USB 2 header.
*Due to the hardware design, the PCIe x16 slot can only support VGA card

CONCLUSION:
This cpu/mobo combo is powerful and capable of handling the essential tasks and is able to handle higher end systems such as Server 2012.
It is about the most power consious desktop available today and it smashes the competition.

This ECS mobo/CPU combo is scarce but you can get an AMD A-6 5200 / mobo in an HP Pavilion 500-a60.

Windows7 didn't like the board swap, so had to do a complete reinstall of operating system. Not the boards fault though. Running different graphics card, so not sure how their graphics look. Seems to function as it should.

Pros: Fast, Low Power, Cheap, CPU Never went over 65C
Cons: Poor Linux Support, Will not run on a single stick of ram until you update the bios, PCI-e x16 on runs at 4X

I was looking to buy a mini computer for gaming because I have a computer at home that weights around 80LBS and is a pain to bring place to place. I got this so I could bring this instead for gaming. It works great I did a benchmark on the CPU/APU on catzilla and hit 767 points. I did a full video here If you are considering doing what I did. As long as this link does not get removed /watch?v=iJJdaa0HGRY I ran a GTX 660 SC 3GB and my games ran amazing I had no bottlenecking which is good. I will recommend this board for anyone looking for a cheap low powered build. Also ECS is not a bad board maker I hear they are but people just give them bad reviews because they are a smaller company. Also they probably never bought anything from them.

Bought this for a home theater PC because I needed the SATA-III ports.

Everything works great, and it supports SATA-III port multipliers (so you can hook up a multi-drive eSATA external enclosure).

I would have given it five stars if it weren't for the HIDEOUSLY ugly and VERY hard to use fancy graphical bios which you CAN NOT DISABLE. You have to switch to text mode every single time you enter the BIOS. Some intern at Elitegroup apparently got carried away with the fact that EFI lets them use graphics in the BIOS and didn't realize that it is more important for the BIOS to be USABLE than to be PRETTY. For example, in the graphical display, it's impossible to figure out how to get from one selection to another using arrow keys (sometimes they're diagonal from each other!) and the contrast between the "selected" option and "unselected" option is near-zero… you have to bang on the arrow keys a bunch to move the selection to figure out what's highlighted.

It was also a massive pain getting Linux to work on this machine and boot from USB, mainly because of the EFI crap.

Dear manufacturers, just because EFI lets you do something doesn't mean you should. Go ahead and put fancy wizzy-crap in if you must, but leave us a way to permanently disable it.
