Not Impressive, November 3, 2007

Quite disappointing gadget. The bad: very limited vocabulary. Claims to have 450,000 entries, but I already was not able to find quite a few words (examples: chofre, lajota, letivo) which I DID find in my Langenscheidt dictionary (which claims to have only 43,000 entries). Ridiculous, with 450,000 entries I expect to pretty much never have to go back to my dictionary to find a word, which was one of the reasons I bought this translator in the first place (the other being that I thought it would be faster to look up a word in an electronic dictionary). Another issue is that in some instances the translation doesn't even have the most common usage of the word (example: cochichar: in the translator given as: to round, actual usage: to whisper) The talking feature is completely useless. Most words pronounced (by a computer generated voice) are completely incomprehensible, especially in Portuguese. Minor issues are: no "back" button to quickly look up another word. You have to first look up a word before you can go to the next (also, if you accidentally mistyped a word, you can't go back to the word you typed once a translation has been generated). Also, it doesn't remember from which language you want to translate (the default is English to Portuguese). One way to mistype is because of the buttons which you must push all the way down to be recognized by the translator. The good: for the words it actually does have it sure is faster than having to flip through a dictionary. Also, it (usually) continues where you stopped when you turn it back on. Which brings me to another issue: the maximum time you can leave the dictionary on is only 5 minutes. So if you are reading a book and you haven't looked up a word within 5 minutes, you have to turn it back on. More of a nuisance, but it sure adds to the overall negative impression I have with this translator.

Horrendous!!!!, March 7, 2008

This product was a big disappointment indeed! Very limited vocabulary, not too user friendly, not to mention the horrible and not at all accurate pronunciation of the Portuguese word. Also, when installing the battery, the compartment broke into pieces. Very fragile and not assembled in a practical way. In all, a total waste of your money.

I gave this translator to my husband as a Christmas present and he adores it. It has lots of helpful features and it pronounces words, which is great for people who are learning English. It's sleek and compact and battery lasts forever.
Five Stars!
