5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from the bottom of the well and beyond..., June 30, 2009
This review is from: EFT for Procrastination (EFT: Emotional Freedom Techniques) (Paperback)
I read everything Gloria Arenson writes. In addition to being a world-class therapist with a lifetime of experience to share, she is one of the true masters of Emotional Freedom Technique and one of my few go-to experts whose knowledge on the subject is consistently superior. I love this book for how compact it is, fititng neatly into purse or backpack, and how well Arenson both tells the story of the many different forms of procrastination (oh yes, you'll see yourself in one or many of them) but also finds gems hidden in the refuse of lives put on hold by this disorder.

There is so much hope, and so many excellent tips here, I don't know where to start. I love how Arenson gently and scientifically lifts the burden of shaming and blaming off the habitual procrastinator's shoulders with education in brain biology (Chapter 7: "It's Your Brain's Fault"). This is paramount learning in comprehending the underpinnings of one's own procrastination. These are lessons none of us learnt in school, yet are oh-so important.

And too, are the excellent pigeonholes and tips Arenson gives in the form of her techniques: "Pork Barrelling", "The Weighting Game" (which in addition, is another great Arenson title to explore), "Dare Yourself To Fail" and her simple yet elegant daily check-in, "The Three-Step Daily Workout". Takes minutes, once you're in the swing of how to do EFT.

The fundamental stream running through the heart and soul of this excellent book is the great love Arenson has for procrastinators (she lists herself among those so afflicted as do I) and how this is elegantly and with great expertise transferred to the reader in the form of exercises designed to gently bring awareness and solutions to the problem.

Bottom line: you need this book. If you put off anything, any time, ever, you need this book. If you haven't gone to the doctor, had the important-yet-frightening conversation or have rooms you can't go in for the mess. YOU NEED THIS BOOK.

As Director of the Energy Coach Institute, it has been my pleasure over many years to have Gloria Arenson lecture to my students and to enthusiastically recommend her many works. This is yet another worthy title to add to that list, and to make sure finds its way into the hands of my family and friends.

Another job, book, crusade and solution very well done. Highest recommendation.

Most people joke about being procrastinators, but we all know that they don't do anything about it. This is a great book with a program to help them. It is easy reading but gets to the heart of the problem. I am so glad I got this book!

EFT: Procastination
Gloria Arenson, MFT

As I procrastinated about reading this book in order to write this review (LOL!) I was convicted in several areas of my life. However, the more I read, the more the feelings of guilt and feelings of being overwhelmed subsided. This is a wonderfully written book by Gloria Arenson, a Marriage and Family Therapist, who is an expert in her field. Unlike most other books on procrastination it does not talk about using DayTimer's and to-do lists. This book deals with the root of your issue and show you how to nip your emotions in the bud.

I will admit that I had to slow down and really READ this book. It is not a book that a reader, who is serious about change, can quickly thumb through. You must take your time and consider the message that it presents. This book will uproot all of your emotional baggage whose funk and debris has crept into your thought life and modified your behavior. Page after page pulled thoughts of past hurts, feelings of unworthiness, and anger about certain situations kicking and screaming onto the piece of paper that I kept close by. The great part about it: the author deals with those feelings with simple steps and explanations on why or where those feelings arose.

One of my favorite chapters is chapter 6: Thinking Doesn't Make it So. Wow, that is a good point to remember as we travel this road called life. Many of us suffer and lose sleep over thoughts that may or may not be True - with a capital `T'. Cognitive distortions, what the author describes as twisted thinking, is the procrastinators culprit of many lost dreams and aspirations. When you travel along life's journey, day after day, thinking negative thoughts about your situation, you fall into a state of depression. You feel the way you think. It seems almost too simple. So simple, many people have missed it.

I'm a perfectionist! I admit it and even though I am a perfectionist, I love and accept myself. The section on "All or Nothing" was both reassuring and therapeutic. Perfectionists see things as either black or white. I have been, since I was a child, grounded on the mantra, "Do it right, or don't do it at all." There is no middle ground, no `just enough will do' or anything of the like. Feelings of anger and/or depression plague my mind when things do not turn out the way I would have wanted them too. This section reminded me that it is OK to not be perfect.

EFT for Procrastination was a very interesting book. There are loads of techniques, invitations for reflection and challenges to gently move you towards success in overcoming procrastination. If you are a procrastinator, like me, pick up this book and start on the road to recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Common Sense Approach to Repairing Procrastination, March 10, 2010

EFT For Procrastination
Author: Gloria Arenson, MFT
Publisher: Energy Psychology Press
ISBN: 978-1-60415-042-1

How often have you put off doing something that you KNEW you needed to get done? Procrastination. Everyone has experienced it at least a few times. It can make your life miserable, and cause stress not just for you but for the others around you. Maybe it's a problem once and again,or maybe it's a frequent problem. You know what needs to be done, and you know how to do it. You probably even have the time, tools or materials you need to complete it, so why isn't it getting done?

Gloria Arenson, MFT has written an extremely helpful book on dealing with a common difficulty. We put off doing a project because we want to avoid the feeling we have about it. There are a number of reasons for this. Shame, pain, bad memories or negative associations, or unpleasant experiences, possibly fear, anxiety or guilt. Many times, we really don't exactly know why we are putting things off at all.

How do we move beyond procrastination? By breaking free of whatever is holding us back and moving forward. Sounds eaiser said than done, right? With the correct method, it can be done, and it can be done painlessly. With this helpful handbook, Arenson shows us just the tools we need to break free.

EFT is the acronym used for Emotional Freedom Technique. Psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors and therapists have learned how to utilize EFT to help their clients. Gloria Arenson puts the same techniques into our hands, teaching us how to use it. It really is a simple and easy to do procedure, but it's not totally without a bit of thought and work.

The basic premise of EFT is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption somewhere in the body's energy system. When our bodies, mind, emotions, etc., are working in harmony, we have positive energy; the problems and stresses that occur in everyday life is what causes a disruption in our energy flow. Without the positive energy flowing easily through the body, mind and spirit, our personal energies are clogged along the way. The premise of EFT is actually the center of all Eastern Medicine, psychology and spirituality. It actually makes common sense when most people think it through, and allows the avoidance of medication or other medical intervention. Success rates have proven that EFT is a valuable and valid therapy modality.

Gloria Arenson has provided the reader with the information and background needed to utilize EFT. Written in detail with concise instructions, encouragement and case histories, this handbook will help an unlimited number of people reach their true potential. I would consider this book to be an outstanding reasource for therapists and people in the helping professions, for parents wanting to help their kids overcome procrastination, and anyone having a problem in their life with procrastinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love EFT - Love Gloria's procrastination book! I bet you will too!, June 27, 2009
This review is from: EFT for Procrastination (EFT: Emotional Freedom Techniques) (Paperback)
I am a colleague-friend of the author and am an EFT practitioner. Gloria is really good at distilling material and she's done a great job with this new book. She lays out the aspects/roots/patterns of procrastination so that you can readily find your own pattern. Then she succinctly shows you how to work with it with EFT. It is so effective! Check out her "roots" of procrastination on page 148 and "Being Born" on page 160!

I have enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about myself as a procrastinator. I always thought procrastination was a bad habit I developed in my life. But after reading this book, I learned that the roots of procrastination go deeper than a bad habit. I have been tapping to release myself from the deep roots that created procrastination. It's been a very useful book. I highly recommend it to all procrastinators out there. Don't procrastinate reading it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacks an understanding tone., December 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: EFT for Procrastination (EFT: Emotional Freedom Techniques) (Paperback)
This book evidently fits other reviewers' needs, but I found the presentation by this author lacking the understanding tone found in other EFT books by authors such as Gary Craig and Carol Look.

Arenson writes about people [procrastinators] who fear to get medical treatment even though they have the symptoms indicating that need. She writes "Soraya conveniently forgot to make an appointment for her mammogram. Lester wouldn't go for a colon exam..." etc. Arenson criticizes people for not taking actions she sees appropriate from her value system, rather than helping people deal with their inner dynamics as they are.

Arenson categorizes her patients: "A college student in one of my workshops *whined* 'I've got a new girlfriend and I've got to give her time." It seems that labeling someone who comes to her for help a "whiner" either verbally, or internally, does not seem appropriate for a healer.

One later section starts, "Are You a Perfectionist Procrastinator?" This tone of categorization and criticism seems less likely to encourage people to look to their inner feelings than to look to avoid such criticism and simply comply with the dictates of the author.

With a growing number of EFT books available, there may be better choices for people looking for them.
