Book Description

June 3, 1999
A centuries-old sport deep in ritual, lore, and passed-down know-how, fly fishing is equal parts great outdoors adventure and armchair philosophy. It's about much more than just catching fish, as anyone can attest who has spent an afternoon releasing hooks from branches or watching fish dart from the shadows.

The Elements of Fly Fishing is a comprehensive celebration of this passionate pursuit, a serious reference volume that explores the rich experience of fly fishing while providing practical logistical information for everyone from neophytes to tournament casters. Featuring the collection of the American Museum of Fly Fishing and including contributions by some of the most admired writers in the field, this handsome volume contains a feast of authoritative information -- from the history of the sport and guidance on the latest equipment to fly-tying instructions for classic designs like the incomparable gold-ribbed hare's ear. This indispensable book also provides time-tested strategies, insight into the fundamentals of casting, reflections on conservation issues, and tips on the best schools and events.

The Elements of Fly Fishing features spectacular visual material, including specially commissioned color photography of finely crafted tackle by f-stop fitzgerald. As fly fishing in both freshwater and saltwater has lured growing numbers of devotees, its highly valued trappings have taken on a new cachet: antique handcrafted bamboo fly rods have become collectors' items and flies created by the great tiers -- tiny masterpieces of concentration and cunning -- are valued by collectors and sportsmen alike. In addition to these dazzling images, the book includes a marvelous array of nostalgic photos depicting great old angling scenes, as well as elegant line drawings and informative instructional sketches, many from the collection of the American Museum of Fly Fishing.

Everyone from the grizzled old fly tier to the beginner fresh from a three-day crash course has his or her own rationale for pursuing a sport that more often than not means lost quarry and exquisite frustration. Whatever the attraction to the water, The Elements of Fly Fishing provides the reader with the means and the inspiration to go out and do it.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

No angler will ever carp about wading into a stream with too much wisdom about the sport, the gear, the rituals, and the ceremonies. In fly-fishing, knowledge is power. It is knowledge dispensed both comprehensively and attractively in the encyclopedic Elements of Fly Fishing. With illustrations as useful as they are alluring, the volume is quite user-friendly at all levels of expertise. And an accomplished cast of contributors includes the likes of Paul Schullery, Dick Talleur, and Gary Soucie to guide you through the considerable lore, equipment, strategy, and technique--as well as the philosophizing that tends to accompany the experience. "Over the years," muses the ever-enjoyable Schullery, "I've come to realize that for all its great traditions and honored experts--for all the generations of brilliant minds trying to figure out how to catch fish--the most wonderful thing about fly fishing may be that most of the time the fish win." What true sporting soul can't stir to the challenge inherent in that observation? Elements goes far in setting that soul in the right direction. --Jeff Silverman

From Library Journal

Almost any anthology is destined to be a mix of good and bad, and this big, illustrated collection is unfortunately no exception. On the good side are Dick Talleur's "Lines, Leaders, & Tippets," Gary Soucie's "Knots," and Sandy Rogers's "The Literature of Fly Fishing" (an excellent selection tool for librarians). Chapters on "Species" and "Warmwater" would have deserved praise had they not ignored the boom in fly-fishing for carp. Disappointments are Dennis Bitton's "Destinations," which reads as if it were lifted straight from tourist pamphlets, and Tom Akstens's "Casting," which relies too much on description and not nearly enough on illustrations. To be fair, it would be nearly impossible to address these subjects adequately within the space of one chapter. The book aims to reach novice anglers, for whom it should be an effective introduction, with helpful and attractive graphics, photos, and sidebars. An optional purchase for fly-fishing collections.AJeff Grossman, Milwaukee Area Technical Coll. Lib., Oak Creek, WI
