Book Description

THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE (UPDATED 2011 EDITION)

The All-Time Bestselling Book on Writing English Newly Edited (Special Kindle Edition) BY WILLIAM STRUNK, JUNIOR

The Elements of Style OVER 10 MILLION COPIES SOLD! (Kindle Edition)

Revised and Updated for 2011 by
Chris Hong, Formerly of Harvard University

OVERVIEW

This book is intended for use in English courses in which the practice of composition is combined with the study of literature. It aims to give in brief space the principal requirements of plain English style. It aims to lighten the task of instructor and student by concentrating attention (in Chapters II and III) on a few essentials, the rules of usage and principles of composition most commonly violated. The numbers of the sections may be used as references in correcting manuscript.

The book covers only a small portion of the field of English style, but the experience of its writer has been that once past the essentials, students profit most by individual instruction based on the problems of their own work, and that each instructor has his own body of theory, which he prefers to that offered by any textbook.

It is an old observation that the best writers sometimes disregard the rules of rhetoric. When they do so, however, the reader will usually find in the sentence some compensating merit, attained at the cost of the violation. Unless he is certain of doing as well, he will probably do best to follow the rules. After he has learned, by their guidance, to write plain English adequate for everyday uses, let him look, for the secrets of style, to the study of the masters of literature.

I'm a huge fan of Strunk and White's "Elements of Style," however, this is not the Strunk and White edition. This is simply a digitized-for-Kindle version of the original (Strunk only) edition.

There's a reason that college classes across the country use the Strunk and White edition--it is simply better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bogus - this is the same as the FREE version June 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
You are not getting Strunk & White's The Elements of Style. You are merely getting the 1919 version of The Elements of Style -- before E.B. White improved it. And who the heck is William Strunk, Jr.? That is an ingenuous claim. Strunk's son did not edit nor annotate The Elements of Style.

If you're happy with just the 1919 version, get the FREE Kindle version, not this bogus one. Save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it from the first page August 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was referred to this book by several writer friends. I'm not a writer myself but I take interest in proper grammar and use of the English language. I decided to get the kindle edition so I could reference the book whenever I wanted. There are two kindle editions and I opted for this one since it's the updated 2011 edition.

From the very first page I knew I was going to love this book. Why? Because it cut's to the chase and starts off with grammar rules right away. Plus, I learned something new on the 3rd page. It also provided confirmation for things that I was using correctly but never knew for sure.

I don't think you need to be a writer to get this book. If you simply want to perfect your own writing for you own sake, have a read and I'm sure you'll learn a few new things.

Although being notorious for it's insight, I found Shrunk' s guide rather arbitrary at times. For example, towards the end of the brief informative, Strunk states that "Alright"... Read more

This book is the bible of English writers everywhere
Although it is a great source, be careful to rely on it as the only one. See Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies by June Casagrande, The Elephants of Style by Bill Walsh, The New Well-Tempered Sentence by Karen Elizabeth Gordon, and The McGraw Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage.
