4.0 out of 5 stars Our World Is Calmer Now, January 24, 2011

This review is from: ELITE-TEK 4-IN-1 REMOTE CONTROL 2 DOG TRAINING COLLAR WITH SHOCK,VIBRATION,ULTRASOUNIC SOUND, AND ANTI-BARK (Electronics)
I decided to write a review on this collar because it has an average of two stars and I don't think that's quite fair for what this does.

I purchased this in October and have used it a number of times since then. The reason I got this collar is because where I live, there aren't a lot of places to go to let the dogs run without the possibility of encountering dangerous wildlife. I needed the dogs to come back the second I called because with alligators, there is no second chance.

While clicker training with treats is the preferable way to go, I also have to deal with people who do not understand that if the dog runs up to them, the last thing they should do is bend down and pet the dog, give the dog a treat, etc because now the dog thinks it gets a reward for running off. I was getting frustrated and desperate for a solution.

I have two dogs, both lab mixes, the male is about 40 pounds, the female is only about 20 pounds. I take them out separately for their training but I still use both collars, one for each dog so that eventually, we can all go out together.

For the smaller dog, I put the unit on level 1 and we went out. Naturally, she bolted off, leaping and jumping about, not a care in the world and no way was she going to listen to me. In fact, I think she laughed at me when I called her back. So I used the tone first. That got her attention but because it was the first time using it, she did not heed the warning. I then used the vibrate. Again, got her attention but she didn't think it was serious. So, I did the shock. Yep, that indicated to her I meant it and she came running back.

Now I only need to use the tone on her. I don't have to shock her, I don't have to push the level up higher. Level 1, one time, was all it took. Now she gets a tone reminder and sometimes, all I have to do is just turn the unit ON when she gets fixated on something. She hears that beep and comes back without me having to say a word.

For this particular dog, this is absolutely worth every single penny I spent on this device because nothing, nothing!! else worked. Now she walks by my side unless I give her the release command and she comes back when I call, sits at my feet and waits for her next command. I can walk her through the neighborhood, with all sorts of distractions and only have to use a slight, "scht!" to get her to slow down, walk next to me and not run off to investigate. Our walks and exercise time are so much more pleasant now that I take her out way more often, for much longer and she and I are both much happier.

For the boy, I have to use the shock. He's stubborn, has an extremely high prey drive and the sound and vibrate don't always make an impact. Most of the time they do, but sometimes, again only on level 1, I give him a quick jolt. It also is much more fun to take him out, let him run where appropriate and have him walk next to me, off leash, despite distractions. And with his prey drive, birds, cats, bugs...they are all huge distractions for him. With this collar, he is learning to stay close.

There ARE some cons to this collar but it's nothing that can't be dealt with and eventually, I'll learn the other. The collar, receivers, that is, seem to need to be recharged every single night. I use them about an hour a day and they quickly drain down. Thankfully you just plug them in to a wall so all you need to do is remember to charge them.

The battery does run down quite quickly inside the unit itself. I make a habit to take it out when we are done for the day so that it will last longer.

And finally, I'm still unclear how to operate this with both dogs out with both collars. It's a little tricky to switch from dog 1 to dog 2, quickly. Right now, since I take them out separately, I have it on "both dog" option but it's just a matter of figuring it out. To be noted: I have not made a significant effort to do this since we are not ready for that. Just make sure you have the operation down before you put the collars on both dogs because you may end up clicking for the wrong dog.

These cons are only slightly annoying but when I consider the benefits my dogs and I have received from this collar, those little things aren't that big of a deal in the end.

I was apprehensive with this collar. I saw the reviews, it wasn't a lot of money and I really hoped I wouldn't have to return it, disappointed.

Well, I didn't need to spend two to four hundred dollars on another, "higher quality" e-collar because this works beautifully. Does it feel cheaper than others? Of course it does. The collars are also plastic and I wasn't sure how well they would work out but they work well. Just make sure that the prong from the receiver is sitting inside one of the holes in the collar and you're fine.

No, this is not "top of the line" but it works. It works on my two dogs who have the attention span of a gnat, who get distracted at every last little thing on this planet and didn't like to listen when their focus got locked on to something else. We do not have those problems anymore.

Not only that, because of these collars, these two hoodlums behave much better in the house, as well. I don't even have the collar on them in the house. They wear it for about an hour a day, outside, as we are training and exercising but they realize now, I mean business and they are listening.

Give the collar a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised. I am. I'm also very happy. And when I'm happier, my dogs are happier.

This review is from: ELITE-TEK 4-IN-1 REMOTE CONTROL 2 DOG TRAINING COLLAR WITH SHOCK,VIBRATION,ULTRASOUNIC SOUND, AND ANTI-BARK (Electronics)
This collar has all the right features and is pretty easy to use. I really like the ability to use tone only to train the dogs once they understand that the tone can precede a vibration or a shock. The anti-bark feature is also good.

If you buy this, I recommend that you let your dog wear it (turned off) for a week prior to actually using it. I also recommend that when you start using it, you turn it on prior to putting the collar on the dog, because the dog will become sensitive to the beep sound when the unit turns on (or off).

What do I dislike? The units that I bought beep intermittently for no reason. This defeats the purpose of the device, since it scares my dogs and it defeats the training. At first I thought I wasn't charging the units enough but I charged them both for 2 days, then tried using them with the same problem. I will be returning these either for a replacement or refund.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally happy with it; controls barking, August 25, 2011

This review is from: ELITE-TEK 4-IN-1 REMOTE CONTROL 2 DOG TRAINING COLLAR WITH SHOCK,VIBRATION,ULTRASOUNIC SOUND, AND ANTI-BARK (Electronics)
I've got two Dobermans, one of them - a rescue - came from bad breading, is larger than normal and is extremely anxiety ridden. When he gets to barking, it's loud and annoying; he gets fixated on the other dog or (worse) a nearby deer (or bird, or the kids, or ...) and he seems to lose awareness of anything else. Combine that with an overly sensitive neighbor and it's a recipe for frustration!

I tried behavior training, sprays, sonic birdhouses etc. But nothing worked. This has.

Pros:
- It's nice having one control for two collars.
- I like having multiple corrections (vibrate, sound)
- It works.

Cons:
- As mentioned in other reviews, confusing instructions. But I did find the You-Tube videos helpful.
- There's a button on the remote that delivers an escalating correction, starting with a beep, then a vibrate, then a shock. You also use this button (by holding it down longer) to switch from one collar to the other. That's poor design and we have regularly accidentally delivered the escalating correction when we really wanted to switch control.
- Switching controls from one collar to the other takes a second or two and sometimes that's too long. You often need to issue the correction more quickly than that, so the dog recognizes the behavior that's being addressed. A long transition means missed opportunities.
- The correction has occasionally gone off on its own. Confusing to the dogs.
- You can set any of the corrections (i.e. the shock) to zero so that if you accidentally press the shock button, the dogs won't feel it. But if you press the escalation button, a shock is still delivered, even though it was set to zero.

For our situation, we've got an invisible fence, so the dogs already wear a collar that will deliver a shock when they go too close to the boundary. I didn't want to use this collar to issue shocks and potentially confuse them. My original solution was to simply set the shock to zero and that sometimes worked, but as I mentioned above between the accidental escalations and occasional corrections that got issued even though we didn't push the button, I wasn't happy with that. My solution was to open up the collars and to cut the wires that delivered the shocks. Problem solved.

I use the vibration when the dogs bark more than is appropriate and the beep to indicate I want them to get away from something. In general, this works well.

The big payoff for me has been my big dobie, who has had a barking problem is now MUCH more under control. I'm sure there are better products out there, but overall, I'm very pleased with the results here.
