In order to use this, you do need to be a bit of a techie, or at least get a techie to help. A key point many may miss and worth trying if it refuses to pair, try pairing code 6789 or look through all the text files on the included mini-CD for the pairing code if it is different for yours.

ONE BIG NOTE: CANNOT BE USED WITH APPLE DEVICES, ONLY ANDROID

I am a long time PC/Network tech, plus a bit of a gearhead, and even I had some issues initially.
My setup: This device and a Viewsonic 7" Android Tablet (wifi and bluetooth, no GPS).

First, I knew that code readers tend to work best if you plug it in, then turn key to ON/ACC (but vehicle usually not started), so I did this.

Second, I enabled bluetooth on my tablet, scanned and found the device listed as "CHX". When I attempted to pair, it stated "try codes 1234 or 0000" yet every time I did this it refused to pair over and over. I put the included mini-CD (which was a "recordable CD") in my PC and looked at all the (VERY POOR and bad English) documentation, and one line in one file I found said "pairing code: 6789". When I went back out and used that code it paired first try (said "paired but not connected" but I hoped that was up to the program/app, and I was right).

Third, I knew I needed an app to read it properly so I had previously installed the Torque Lite (free) app from 1mobile (also available on google play store, but my tablet cannot use google store).

Fourth, in the Torque app, I had to open the options and find the setting for "Bluetooth Preferences - Device" and chose the CHX which I had already paired.

My unit had issues and I had to return it to Amazon for refund. I could pair it to my computer or my droid bionic but none of the provided programs or Torque pro could connect. It had an obvious problem.
A second problem lies in the software provided. This is a mini CD/R with many OBDII apps on it and common drivers for Bluetooth hardware. Many of these APPs come with Key Generators. Like pirated software. I am not kidding, they are colorful, animated and play keygen music. This ladies and gentlemen is piracy being sold in retail packaging "I think"... I am not comfortable running this disk on my computer. I suggest Amazon look into the content on these disks. One of the APPs on the disk is sold on Google play store for $6 and they give you a copy for free with a crack to make it the pro version.
This from one readme on the disk ( there are about 20 different ones)

"we suggest that you can use "scantool_net113win",if you think that this software isn't easy to use,
you can free to choose following software:EasyOBDII,OBD2Spy,ScanMaster-ELM.But them require lisence."

They provide you with copies of the software and with Key generators you use after install to Authenticate and activate the software. Comodo Anti virus hates this disk. Look at the picture I added in the description.

Seriously Amazon, this is really Dodgy.

First: This device needs the Torque app on a phone to function on the phone.

After you have plugged the unit into your vehicle OBDII port, started the engine, confirmed a red lamp on the device, and paired your phone with the ELM 327 device.
Important:
It is absolutely critical that you tell the Torque App to CHOOSE THE CORRECT BLUETOOTH DEVICE stored on your phone. Open the Torque app and select the settings icon (lower left), then MENU settings, then OBD2 Adapter settings, then choose bluetooth device, then select your OBDII adapter name like CBT. Failure to select the device when you have any other bluetooth devices paired on your phone will mean the OBDII device cannot communicate with the Torque app. It doesn't know which phone-paired bluetooth device to select until you check the correct one in that menu.
I suspect many OBDII adapters have been returned because this step was not done.

OBDII ports are usually under the dash on the driver side. Some VW's had them behind a cover after opening the ashtray.

You have now been warned! DO NOT BUY OR USE THIS OBD READER!

I purchased the reader to use with my 2010 Chevy Silverado and was very excited to get using it to read my check engine light that was on. I plugged it in an started up the vehicle.

Before I could even get to do ANYTHINNG with the OBD READER let alone open the Torque application ALL of the error lights on my dash turned on and STAYED on as soon as I started the truck! Airbag lights, ABS light, Stabilitrak light, Tire pressure light and well you get the point.

None of these lights were on prior to plugging the OBD reader in, so.... I tried turning off the truck and restarting it thinking this would fix the issue. When I tried to restart it this time, THE TRUCK WOULD NOT START!!! No turn over, no clicking no nothing and completely dark dash!

So, I unplugged the OBD reader and tried starting it, well this time it started right up but all of the warning lights came back on and REMAINED on STILL!!

Wanting to clear these lights so I could get to finding out what was going on with the check engine light that I had to begin with, I disconnected the battery for 2 hours hoping this would clear the lights. I started the truck 2 hours later and MOST of the lights turned off expect for my ABS and Stability lights. Worried that something was now really wrong I decided to drive it over to my mechanic to take a look at it, about a half hour drive. On the way over there these other lights, magically turned off. How or why I don't know but they did. I took it anyways to the mechanic and had him look at but he was not able to find any damage..... THANK GOD!
