From the Back Cover

An EMP attack might cost $20 billion and a lot of inconvenience or- it might cause significant mortality.
The power grid failure could be repaired in days or- it could take years.
It could happen today or- next decade.
While Congress hears testimony of our nuclear armed enemies with enhanced EMP weapons- our electric power grid is more vulnerable than ever.
Political leaders and scientists encouraged Americans to prepare for a long term power outage in Congressional testimony. They admit to doing so themselves.
This book describes our personal preparation, survival research and purchasing experience to prepare for an EMP attack.

About the Author

This book is based on our reading of survival preparation texts and congressional testimony of EMP-related hearings, combined with our experience and training.  We have had careers in electrical engineering, holistic nutrition and public health sanitation. The intent is to describe our preparation, research and purchasing experience so that readers can benefit from our effort. The EMP survivalist must have some expertise in areas of communication, medicine, first aid, wild foods, solar energy, and electronics.  We hope that readers will further research and enhance these plans and options for their situation.

The title is "EMP Survival," not how to build faraday cages, etc. While there is good information about faraday cages and other engineering and theoretical information, the value of this book is that it combines some excellent, practical, and detailed tips about real survival (from the author's experience, not just from someone else's "be prepared for disaster" list). In addition, he emphasizes how an EMP can (and would) strike with probably no warning to the general public. At first it would seem that your power is simply out - something we've all experienced. But it then goes on to explain how to determine that we've been hit with an EMP by trying other electronic devices. He goes over what might work, what might or probably would not work, and somewhat on how to protect AGAINST an EMP. This isn't an engineering book, and should not be rated against that criteria. And at the "Kindle" price for our Andriod phone, it was outstanding. While we already practice some emergency preparation items including food storage, cooking options, heating, light, protection, etc., this had some tips and personal experience with various products or commodities that was very helpful to us. It's great for beginners as well as those reasonably far along in their preparation - particularly those that have not been very aware of EMP as a very real potential threat. It can even happen because of a large solar storm, not just from a terrorist nuclear device.

It should be noted that a freighter just miles off one of our coasts could launch a short to medium range missile with a relatively small nuclear bomb, and get it high enough to create a devastating EMP across hundreds or even thousands of square miles.

I followed up reading "One Second After" with this book and found it to be very useful and informative. I've already taken some of the steps recommended in this book and keep telling myself "Better to be prepared and never need it than to be caught off guard." While the specter of an EMP disaster is very scary, the thought of being caught unprepared for the day the lights go out kept me up at night. This book has given us some good ideas about what to have on hand so we can keep going.

Be a good scout - BE PREPARED. This book will give you some good ideas.

Wish I'd read Highlander419's review more closely before ordering. Very basic information only in this book. I guess when Highlander spoke about this being the equivalent of a high school paper I made the mistake of thinking back to the level of detail and diagramming I put into my own high school projects. My mistake. Anyone with any level of insight on the EMP problem already knows everything of value in this book. Uncertain? Spend 10 minutes reading an internet search on EMP and you'll know as much as this book professes to provide.

EMP is a very real and substantial threat. If you've read "One Second After" then you've already learned essentially everything you can learn from this book, in a much more engaging format.

Anyone who thinks this book's recounting is "detailed" has a very simplistic understanding of what details are. It does branch into a number of other survival topics. Unfortunately, this is space which the book sorely needed to use for completing its mission in reviewing EMP and EMP preparedness. 3 pages out of 235 on Faraday cages should tell you that this is not a book of substance. If you're interested in "Appendix A other survival scenarios" then take the money you would spend on this and buy "Patriots".

If you want to learn about EMP take the money you would spend on this and buy "One Second After". Read the internet on EMP... while you can.

Charging $10 (Kindle) for this book is absurd. I've paid 99 cents for self-published first novels that were 10 times the book that this is. A previous reviewer compared this to his kid brother's high school term paper, but that was too generous; it's more like a C-minus book report. The authors apparently missed the lesson in grammar school about compound sentences, but at least they got the concept of footnotes. The book is lacking any sort of analysis or the ability to syntheize the material that they must have obtained from the Internet. Anyone interested in EMP is advised to GOOGLE the term and spend about a half-hour reading through the souces, after which they will be more knowledgabe than these authors. Then read William Fortchen's novlel "One Second After."

Interesting book, but not as good as some of the others on the topic. Really, preparing for an EMP attack is simple. Amazon even sells EMP bags that will protect your electronics. Be sure to buy the real ones, not just cheap static bags. The ones Amazon sells are tested by NASA and say they will give something like 45 dB shielding... pretty good.

After reading "One Second After", I went in search of more information regarding EMP attacks. This book is very informative in talking about our enemies, and what they are planning, plus what our government is, or isn't, doing to help protect our vulnerable infrastructure against such an attack. The survival part is broken down into easy to read, and understand, sections. It covers a large amount of topics, and gives the reader more ideas for what to do when, and if, such a disaster should hit our country. I really enjoyed this book.
