5.0 out of 5 stars Not Pretty - But WORKS!!!, May 26, 2007
This review is from: EN356UTABA - HP Compaq Promo tc4400, Core2-Duo T5600, 12.1 XGA panel, 512M memory, modem, 80G HDD, 802.11a/b/g, Win XPT OneNote, 3-3-0 wrty (Personal Computers)
First off- this isHP Compaq Tablet PC tc4400 - Core Duo T2500 / 2 GHz - Centrino Duo - RAM : 512 MB - HD : 60 GB - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR - fingerprint - Win XP Tablet PC 2005 - 12.1" TFT 1024 x 768 ( XGA ) NOT a pretty or impresive looking machine like the Sony Notebooks or Apple laptops. Well... not until you swivel the screen around (Where the swivel mechanism is prety robust - not flimsy and delicate) and flip it down to use it as a notepad. Which once you get a hang on executing this manouvre with a flair and style - does turn heads.

It's also VERY heavy for it's size. HP does not have a nice compact bag for it - so you end up carrying this sagging bag like a dor-to-door salesman. So if you want to get your look together - you will need to hunt for a bag that does the mall size of this tablet PC - some justice.

Now for the workings - the text recognition is great, the processig (Core 2 Duo 1.83 and higher) is not compromised by either the size of the notebook or by the fact that the input mode takes quite a bit of processing to work. It's fast.

The Version I bought cam with 512MB RAM that does not cut it. 1BG plus is a necessity. I'd really reccommend 2 or higher. Beyond that - you're the little beast will ROCK!

There are NO problems with the switching of screens from upright to flat where the entire UI flips around for ease-of-use and to giv you tat sense of writing on a very heavy and somewhat thick writing pad. The Stylus is magnetic stylus an not a touch stylus wih is pretty cool. The screen itself is pretty scrach resistant - I live in a desert an you'll be surprised where the sand creeps into - but there hasn't been the scratching I'd expected from the abuse my screen gets.

Functionally - this is as good a noteboor or Tablet as I've ever seen. The DVD writer is not built in and cannot be slotted so must be external (More stuff and wires to carry)- which is a pain. But then again - I realised that I don't use too many CD's any more when I'm on the trot and the lack of the built in DVD R/W is more of a secuity blanke for me - than real functionality. The computer holds what I need and any additional information is just easy to carry on my USB memory devices. I realised that I don't hav very much on CD's or DVD's except for Installation CD's and music for my car (For which I should really get an i-pod).

Overall - this is a pretty special little machine. Does take a little getting used to - but my new fear here is- If I really get used to this and need to change my Notebook at some point - I really will ONLY want exactly the same thing in a prettier package - because it really is a great little workhorse.

I really love it. Just wish it was a little prettier and had nicer legs - then I'd marry it.
