This review is from: ENGRAVED IN BLACK (Audio CD)
People like to complain about bands sounding unoriginal; or sounding too much like other bands. People like to complain about new cd's saying "Heard that before. Sounds like all other death metal". Well, maybe people need to go back in time and start listening to some old stuff. I am not saying "Engraved In Black" by Acrostichon is all-out original in sound. I am not saying this is real old either - just kind of old. But there is so much good stuff out there from the late 80s and early 90s people missed the first time around. I am surprised a fellow old school metaller hasn't written a review up about this one.
There is a song on this cd called "Relics", which was featured on the metal comp "Peaceville Vol.4". That comp was from 1992 and had such bands as Darkthrone, Vital Remains, Pentagram and Autopsy on it... Pretty good comp. But "Relics" stuck out. What a great death metal song. I didn't know who Acrostichon was back in 1992, or even when I bough the comp in 1998. I eventually found this full length by Acrostichon "Engraved In Black" and it is a truly special death metal cd. This disc really is for collectors. It is a classic. A hidden gem. Forgotten. Undiscovered by many. Hard to find. Way out of print, in desperate need of a re-issue.
"Engraved In Black" is death metal with a touch of doom thrown in that gives it a *rocking out* effect. To give a specific description of the sound of this disc, I would say it's a cross between Divine Eve and Asphyx. The vocals kind of have that Martin Van Drunen-strep throat-I'm about to puke sound to it. Deep indeed. (By the way I think this singer is, like, a chick and stuff). Anyway, the pace (specifically the drums) have a little bit of a mid-paced punk rock feel to it - like "As the Angels Weep" by Divine Eve. The pace is really mixed though. We go from near blast beat speed to slower, lulling/doomy speed. And don't worry about the production. This disc is HEAVY.
So check this one out on-line somewhere. Sample it on MySpace and try to find it. Maybe Metal Mind will re-release it someday.
