Before commenting on the Eastern Greek Orthodox Bible, a few words must be said about the translation of its predecessor, the Orthodox Study Bible. As a convert to Orthodoxy (from first Protestantism, then Roman Catholicism), I was anxiously anticipating the Orthodox Study Bible (OSB) published by Thomas Nelson in 2008. Alas, the lofty goals of producing the first English Orthodox translation of the holy scriptures fell short. The positives of the OSB are as follows: doctrinal explanations interspersed throughout the biblical text; several helpful articles authored by Orthodox bishops; some enlightening commentary with patristic references; a few full-page icons, an attempt to produce an English translation of the Greek Septuagint (with the full canonical texts, in their proper order), and, perhaps most impressively, the lengthy list of ecclesiastics/ scholars (covering most Orthodox jurisdictions) attached to this effort.
Now the negatives: first, the use of the Protestant New King James Version (NKJV) as the OSB New Testament text. Despite the fact that the NKJV (and the KJV, its parent) has undeniably beautiful prose at parts (and has often been borrowed in English Orthodox service books), it is a product of the Anglican rebellion against the papacy. In short, Anglicanism is irreconcilable with Roman Catholicism, to say nothing of Orthodoxy. For Orthodox to use a Protestant translation of scripture as authoritative is just as incomprehensible as Protestants structuring their church services using the rubrics of the Divine Liturgy. They would never compromise on their doctrinal principles to do so, and the Orthodox should not have capitulated in this manner.

This is, quite simply, a real Eastern Orthodox translation of the Bible. It is not a study Bible. Instead, it is a real translation of the Greek to English.

The OSB was a huge disappointment for a lot of reasons, but mostly because the New Testament was just a NKJV with simplistic commentaries. You can find excellent Orthodox commentaries online for free of just about any book in the New Testament.

The problem is that hardly anyone is aware of this translation, very much like the Orthodox New Testament by the nuns of Holy Apostles Convent in Colorado. I think I would recommend this over the ONT as well for readability. It really tries to simply go for a literal translation of the Greek, but it is based on the 1904 Patriarchal Text. I would suggest this translation, if you insist on having an "Orthodox" translation of the Bible.

It is a shame that the hardcover version is not available on Amazon, or that they have not released a leather bound version. You can find the hardcover version on Lulu. Also, get the word out, especially if you are involved in Bible study or seminary. It would be nice if this would be use liturgically like the author would like, at least for the reading of the Epistles.

This is not done by an individual, but rather a group of over 40 volunteer translators. They are doing a translation of the Septuagint right now, but I've not seen much progress in that for a few years. I hope they finish. The OSB Septuagint is a reasonable translation, but it is nice to have alternatives.

Here is the website of the translators:

I've been trying to research different Bibles and different branches of The Christian Faith. In my search I've learned about The Orthodox Churches and especially The Eastern Greek Orthodox Church. I have been somewhat drawn to them because of there ancient form of Christianity.

While searching I found a website for The Greek Orthodox in America that had The Patriarchal 1904 Greek New Testament Text available to read on the site. This is the site : [...] [...]
Then I started to search the net to look for a possible English Translation since I can't read Greek and I didn't want to have to use Google Translate to read every passage LOL. Well anyways I found the EOB : The Eastern Greek Orthodox New Testament on there site : [...] [...] . I had to order it from LuLu at the time because it wasn't available on Amazon yet.

With all that said, let me just say that this is a Great Translation. It's very interesting to read a Real New Testament Translation based off of The Greek Orthodox Scriptures. I bought the Thomas Nelson Orthodox Bible but it didn't have an Orthodox translation of the New Testament. It was just The NKJV. Don't get me wrong, I like the NKJV, but I wanted a translation based off of the Greek Orthodox Scriptures.

This is the best translation of the New Testament I have ever read. Since purchasing the pocket edition, I bought the perfected edition. It is greatly improved by putting the footnotes at the bottom of the page instead of at the end of the particular gospel and non-gospel portions of the NT. It also includes some introductory material which was missing from the earlier editions and Appendix G: Luke 3:36 -- The Second Cainan Controversy.
