5.0 out of 5 stars Old-School Brawling Done Right!
Eve of Extinction has not been getting much hype. I've seen previews here and there in magazines and they're put in thirds of a page. Meanwhile, games like State of Emergency get tons of coverage, yet in my humble opinion, fail horribly gamewise (not saleswise). In this case, who cares about hype?

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to my expectations
I remember a few months back seeing the ad for this game in GI or some PS magazine and thinking that it looked pretty neat. I have to admit that I have been known to get suckered into some poor games and bad buys and this one is no different. Time goes by and after only reading very little about I decided to go ahead and get this game without knowing if it were going to...

Eve of Extinction puts you in the shoes of Josh Calloway, an ex-employee of Wisdom, a biogenetics corporation with a secret agenda of ruling the world. After discovering their plan of world domination, he and his girlfriend and ex-coworker Eliel Evergrand try to escape but to no avail. The two are captured and Eliel's soul is placed in a Legacy, a weapon made from the fusion of a human soul and an ancient metal, codenamed E.O.E. As Josh and E.O.E. are being transported, things go awry and Josh manages to escape with E.O.E. Thus, your quest to discover Wisdom's true intentions and restoring Eliel back to her body begins.

E.O.E. is the next step of evolution in the Old-School Brawler genre, of which Streets of Rage was a benchmark. Throughout the game you utilize E.O.E. which as you progress through the game can become a variety of weapons from a giant axe to a crossbow. From here you can switch weapons midcombo to extend and maximize damage. To add another dimension to the gameplay, each weapon has a Legacy Drive that can be activated. Using the Legacy Drive in itself is something to master. And for you 3D skeptics out there, the lock on button (L2) is just perfect.

The graphics are very nice. Not Final Fantasy X caliber but it's still awesome. Control is spot-on and the challenge factor first time around is moderate. The story has a couple twists and is very good in itself. The music is actually not bad and I found myself humming to some of them. And as a plus, this game is very anime-influenced.

All in all, E.O.E. is a worthy addition to any gamer's PS2 collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BEAT-EM UP!!!!!!, March 3, 2002

When I picked up this game the other day, I wasn't too sure what to expect. I saw pictures of this game and it looked great. So, I popped it into my ps2 and i was blown away!! The graphics are great! The gameplay resembles that of the bouncer and State of emergency. You get different weapons with special functions, and a whole lot more!! The game runs smoothly with no slow daown whatsoever. If you're a fan of fighting games, Then go get this game right now!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Controls and Bland Storyline Make This Game A Miss!, March 14, 2002

Let me first say that this game is better than State of Emergency although not by much. The controls are absolutely horrible. I found myself spending more time trying to make jumps and climbing down ladders without falling and dying than actually fighting. The enemy characters are generic and are not the brightest enemies in the videogame world. I think those ghost on old-school pacman and the Mad Gear thugs of Final Fight are a whole lot smarter. And the main character's girlfriend is very annoying perhaps more annoying than the controls. The storyline is right out of some low budget cheap ripoff made for television [stuff] you'd see on the scifi channel too often. I suggest renting this game first!

I remember a few months back seeing the ad for this game in GI or some PS magazine and thinking that it looked pretty neat. I have to admit that I have been known to get suckered into some poor games and bad buys and this one is no different. Time goes by and after only reading very little about I decided to go ahead and get this game without knowing if it were going to be any good or not. As soon as I got home and started reading through the manual I could tell that this wasn't going to be what I was hoping for. This was later confirmed when I put the game in and to my dismay I was greeted with just another standard beat-em-up style game. I think it must be just growing older because I can remember loving those corny, mindless run-around, kill everyone type games a la Final Fight, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and Fighting Force. All though I must say, it was during Fighting Force for the PSone that I first started noticing my need for deeper gameplay. So, this leads me to believe that for younger gamers with a penchant for simplistic gameplay that is quick fun, this game could be something you might want to try out. If you are looking for a real gaming experience I would recommend passing this game on, maybe trying it out as a rental first or try The Bouncer(much better gameplay and story). All in all, its just not the game I was hoping for. I took my copy and traded it in for the second Silent Hill game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Under rated Gem, September 10, 2011

This game is a classic that wasn't really heard of. A game that was unfortunately released at a time when bigger named games were released. Controls are a bit of a hassle to get used to, but once you get accustomed to them, the game is great fun. I recommend it to anyone who has a thing for either anime styled games or action/beat 'em up/hack n' slash games in general. You wont be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent PS2 Release, March 10, 2002

Let me start by saying that E.O.E. is a fun game. There's a good storyline, but not so much that it takes away from the gameplay. The game is very action based and a lot of good old fashioned beating people up. There are some cool and unique weapons that have special powers and the levels so far (I am only 3 levels into the game) are pretty decent. The main thing to remember about this game is that it is fun to play. If you're looking for an epic storyline than this game is not it. But if you're looking for constant action and killing bad guys than you should like this game too.

The bad sides: The camera controls are one of the most annoying you will ever see... But, if you can ignore it, then you got a decent arcade type game to play.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the coolest games I have played!, January 29, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: EOE: Eve of Extinction (Video Game)
Well, to get one thing staright, this game's story is REALLY corny! (Atlantis? Stealing souls? Magic?) I mean come on! That is SOOO corny! Ayways, that's the only reason why it has 4 stars instead of 5. The reason why this game is so cool is the fighting. There are lots of weapons and unique enemies with their OWN fighting styles! This weapon system is so great because there are a bunch of combos to do, and you can make the weapons stronger! It doesn't take long to beat it, but it takes a few tries to complete it. (The game is only about 6 hours long, but PDA's take a long time to complete, not to mention getting the weapons to level 5) You can also play bonus games and view the button sequence movies. (If you miss a button, you lose some life, and if you make it, you can get rid of enemies faster.)I definitely reccomend this game, but some people have diferent tastes than me.

1.0 out of 5 stars retarded, February 9, 2004
This review is from: EOE: Eve of Extinction (Video Game)
When I saw this game, I thought it looked interesting. I was wrong. The plot is as basic as they come, with very little in the way of surprises or twists. The controls are clumsy at best. It also seems like you have to hit everyone 20 times before they die. Seeing that they made the weapons look amazingly like light sabers, I feel like a baseball bat would probably kill the enemies faster. Overall, a terrible game that should be rented at best, and only if you've beat every other game ever made.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter crap!, August 21, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: EOE: Eve of Extinction (Video Game)
Name says it all. This game is not challenging, predictable, and is at times more vague than Bush's sobriety. I had to purchase this game for a class. The assignment was to take a less than favorable game, play it, andwrite any changes we'd make. Needless to say there was a laundry list of changes. I was one of two people in my group to finish the game. Don't waste your time and money with this game. It's not even good to play stoned. Get something else, like Burnout:Takedown, Halo 3, or God of War. There are much better games out there than this.
