Editorial Reviews

Review

"Joining others in Continuum's 'Reader's Guide' series is an introduction to the key literary text The Catcher in the Rye, a book often assigned for both high school and college-level reading. This study examines different ways of thinking about novels offering both general and specific analysis and inviting students to learn more about history, language, and literary approach. High school and college-level collections will find it involving." —James A. Cox, California Bookwatch, March 2008

"I thought I knew this J.D. Salinger novel really well...but Sarah Graham has convinced me otherwise...The critical reception section is fascinating...All Catcher in the Rye teachers should read this book." - The Use of English

"Sarah Graham's commentary on The Catcher in the Rye is concise and coherent...Her treatment of Salinger's novel provides enough depth to give most readers new ways to think about the novel. At the same time, the book is short enough that it can be used easily by those who haven't the need for something more elaborate. [Graham's book] is worth seeing and worth using...[and will] contribute to ongoing discussion and debate that will, together, keep Salinger's novel 'alive'." - European Journal of American Studies

This is a cliff's-notes type summary, not the full text. Save your $9.99, I'm still trying to find a full-text version I can buy online.....

This is a great tool to use as a companion to "Catcher In The Rye" especially for high school students. My school purchased a number of these for our school library and they were a huge asset to students that were struggling to get through the text or had trouble catching on to certain themes or other larger issues that took place within the novel. I definitely recommend this for a high school reading "Catcher" for the first time.

Helpful text. The negative reviews based on people getting a study guide rather than the novel are idiotic. It's like giving a negative review of something because it was shipped to you too slowly. Review the actual item, not the service, morons.

I just got this book wanting to read Catcher in the Rye...for 9.99 and the title naturally you would think this was the actual book...NOT cliff notes, which it is. DO NOT buy this! Unless cliff notes is what you are looking for. I am shocked there is not Catcher in the Rye for Kindle.

I am a student teacher preparing to teach The Catcher in the Rye this spring. This guide helped me prepare and further analyze. This guide helped me with ideas for literary approaches. Ideally, it would help students to better understand the author and his unique perspective through Holden's eyes.
