5.0 out of 5 stars hummm, October 17, 2001

I picked up this cd by accident. It was misfiled in the electronic section. I am really glad that happened. One of the employees at the store told me they were electronic rock. So I took a chance and bought it. It is a masterpeice that seamlessly pieces together so many genres and emotions. To say that it is electronic rock is not really doing this cd justice. It does however redefine rock and put sould into electronica. If you are looking for a jock rock, or hard band these guys are not for you. If you are looking for a trip hoppy radioheaddyish jeff buckeley cure jungle band these guys are it. Weird combo but it works =)

I can not believe there is music like this out there. It is the perfect blend of rock and electronica. If you like radiohead, Bjork, Pink Floyd mixed with drum and bass/jungle. This album is for you. These guys rock the house even more with there live shows which I was fortunate enough to see. They play all the electro live, cant wait to hear there full length. Peace. Highly suggest it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Into the twilight, October 30, 2004
This review is from: EPrime (Audio CD)
Woven's debut EP "EPrime" is pretty much the ideal Halloween music: Dusky, melancholy rock with electronic undercurrents, music that can be called romantic-gothic if anything. It's haunting and ghostly, a trip into a cold night with a full moon.

The music ranges from steady and a little bit bouncy ("Beautiful") to hypnotic dark rock ("Tesion," "Who Knows"). And the half-hour long "Solder Me.... + Ghost Tracks" starts off with a mournful searing song ("It's all right/it's over...") that melts into a long, creepy near silence, only to resurface with a sort of foghorn-rock, which then transforms into an eerie drum-led song with haunting vocals. It sounds like a ghost trying to get out of a metal barrel.

There's not a lot of really spooky, beautiful music -- let alone something as accomplished as Woven's debut EP. It's creepy. It's pretty. And the final song is one of the finest sonic experiments that I have ever heard, especially taking into account the half-hour length.

The vocals are good, suitably mournful and wistful in all of the songs. It simply gets a little odd at the end of "Solder Me.... + Ghost Tracks," where Ory Hodis's vocals take on a strange, wind-moaning quality that seeps in and out. The electronic influence is subtle, slipping in and out of the heavy guitar riffs with a vaguely sinister, haunted-house feel.

You won't find what you expect in "EPrime". I certainly didn't -- it turned out to be brooding, melancholy and deeply engrossing. Welcome to the dark underworld -- Woven's "EPrime" will take you there.

5.0 out of 5 stars brooding at its finest, June 24, 2002

Contrary to most rock bands that scream to get attention, Woven is one that whispers its secrets softly into your ear. With their five-song debut on EPrime, Woven expertly fuses elements of rock, electronica and trip-hop to create a totally unique sound.

The music on EPrime ranges from brooding to downright creepy. There seems to be a lot of guitar experimentation here to achieve different effects. The tracks are flavored with subtle guitar tweaks; sinister, mutilated synthetic sounds and a haunting blend of vocals.
Singer/guitarist/programmer Ory Hodis manages to tingle the spine with his emotional crooning.

It¡¦s a marvel how a new band can deftly combine art and innovation. Woven¡¦s music maintains a peculiar balance between relief and tension, the organic and synthetic, the sublime and bizarre. Their hybrid of sound bleeds gothic, but not vulgar. The lyrics are consciously emotional yet strangely enigmatic. EPrime is a tour de force in musical experimentation. It¡¦s a sound trip to the underworld that leaves the listener delightfully lightheaded. This album is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album, December 18, 2001

Contrary to most rock bands that scream to get attention, Woven is one that whispers its secrets softly into your ear. With their five-song debut on EPrime, Woven expertly fuses elements of rock, electronica and trip-hop to create a totally unique sound.

The music on EPrime ranges from brooding to downright creepy. The first track "Beautiful" unravels a catchy melody, accompanied by subtle guitar tweaks and a haunting blend of vocals. Singer/guitarist/programmer Ory Hodis manages to tingle the spine with his emotional crooning.

Mutilated synthetic sounds and eerie lyrics ("Hovering white gown / Sailing / Slowly / Only you are / Too far to reach") are evident in "Tesion". There seems to be a lot of guitar experimentation here to achieve different effects. Add the sinister background vocals and you've got an impressive gothic rock song.

The short instrumental "Steady" is accentuated by a seamless mix of organic drums and bass. The result is a soothing and somewhat peaceful experience.

Another soulful track is "Who Knows", which makes use of an acoustic guitar coupled with distorted noise samples. Once again, Hodis' strong vocals prove electrifying and otherworldly.

Perhaps "Solder Me" is the most emotionally-driven track, where Hodis sings: "Its easy / To cling to the old no matter how much it hurts / Put down the blame / Forgive the wombless / Mother" and is followed by a crunchy and intense climax.

There is a 10-minute hidden ghost track that plays with more distorted tweaks. Using various odd noises and what sounds like groaning spirits coming out of nowhere, it is quite chilling.

It's a marvel how a new band can deftly combine art and innovation. Woven's music maintains a peculiar balance between relief and tension, the organic and synthetic, the sublime and bizarre. Their hybrid of sound bleeds gothic, but not vulgar. The lyrics are consciously emotional yet strangely enigmatic. EPrime is a tour de force in musical experimentation. It's a sound trip to the underworld that leaves the listener delightfully lightheaded. This album is a must-have. 5/5 :)

If you like Woven, you probably can't get enough. 1000 plays will lead even the most die-hard to seek more than 8-bit Monk. There are a couple really solid tracks on here and all of it's good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Millennium Whoopie Music Woven's 'E.Prime' Barry White for a, December 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: EPrime (Audio CD)
Despite what anyone says, it's not easy being a romantic in the 21st century. You think you've got everything figured out perfectly: flowers, candles, a soap-free dinner. She smiles slyly at you as you head towards the CD player. You then press play and fill the room with the sweet sounds of...Barry White?? You have to turn up the volume to drown out her uncontrollable laughter.

Face it guys, it may have worked for our parents, but these days ol' Barry is just downright cheesy. What we need is 21st century mood music for 21st century women.

Woven's debut EP on Interscope Records, aptly titled "EPrime," features a delightful hybrid of rock, electronica, jungle, and drum and bass, all blended together to create a sonic atmosphere prettier than a sweat-drenched Anna Kournikova in a silver Ferrari convertible. You get the picture- Spanish fly for the ears.

As a matter of fact, I got considerably animated the first time I listened to it. Call them the Pink Floyd for the new age. Woven adopts a Radiohead-ish vibe in combining lush electronic loops and samples with old-fashioned rock, then further layering that groundwork with soothing melancholic vocal lines.

It's really a pity they only managed to put out 5 songs. EPrime ends and simply leaves the listener wanting more. Aside from that minor disappointment, I was more than satisfied with the CD. From the opening track "Beautiful" to the somewhat hidden last track "Solder Me" (the song begins 25 minutes into the track), EPrime is a musical envelope that blankets the unsuspecting listener for about 45 minutes, and then releases him back into his comparatively ordinary live.

Not being the biggest fan of electronic music, I was initially skeptical. But Woven pulls the hybrid off well, and provided me with some soothing tunes that definitely helped to clear the mind. I've heard their live shows are amazing, and would definitely go to see them. Even though the music is created primarily with machines, there's no doubt that these guys definitely put soul into what they do. Additionally, unbeknownst to them, they've created some perfect music for making a little whoopie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! New, different, and beautiful!, October 16, 2001

These guys are great. A bittersweet mix with echoes of Pink Floyd & Perry Ferrel floating on top of solid jungle rhythmns. Entirely uniqe, wonderfully evocative and illuminating. And the vocals! Like icicles melting, their drops caught on the wind and carried to distant shores. I even heard one of their songs in a dream I had the other night! I hope they tour!
