Truly suspenseful and absolutely stellar, September 24, 2007

I won't lie. Fuyumi Soryo's artwork isn't varied. Her characters look beautiful and the same. The backgrounds serve the story instead of the other way around.
But that doesn't matter because Eternal Sabbath has what counts the most: A killer storyline.
Manga, like anime, is always a risky endeavor because the chances are just as likely that it'll all end bad as it all ending good and I have a feeling that this story will end in tragedy, but that's the way it goes. I'm willing to take the ride wherever it goes because while the plot of a human experiment gone wrong (a la Frankenstein) is cliche, I still want to know what will happen to Shuro and Mine and the people that they encounter because somehow, some way, Soryo made me care about them and that is always a good sign for me.
I didn't think that Volume 5 could be topped, but Volume 6 is just stellar. In Eternal Sabbath, the moral ambiguities are not prettified nor are they used gratuitously. When a character makes a decision, for good or ill, there is an effect. And that effect creates a truly suspenseful chain of events in which anything could happen.
I don't know how long this series is, but I vow to see this series to the end because it is just that good.
