Verified Purchase
Well where do I start... I have purchased just about every style and make of knife over the years from folders to nearly machete types, off the shelf and custom and never pulled one ore grip with the out of the box as sharp as this one. Balance is superb as well as fit and finish. I can always gripe about price and nearly didn't buy this one because of the price but now am certain I made the right choice. Up till now my favorites were the BK2 and Tom Brown Tracker. I found the grip to be more comfortable than either of the other two. The blade profile is nearly identical to the BK2 but with the added jumping for more control and more grip with the micarta scales. Beware that as with most canvas micarta condition your hands to it as it will knock the bark off the pads of your fingers...
No complaints and this knife just moved into my number one spot. Highly recommended .
Note: For all the bad reviews regarding the overpowering weight of this knife (1lb) hire someone bigger to pack it around for you cause if these folks are cryin about this knife being to heavy maybe they ought to stay home and just watch the survivor boys on the tv...Just sayin

Bought mine from Knifeworks, Amazon would work ok also i guess. ESEE makes some very nice stuff! My buddy owns a couple of their other knives, a RAT folder, and he got his wife a three inch IZULA. All that stuff is awesome.

This ESEE RAT-5 is a great knife, heavy duty thick blade and handle. I have no doubt you could chop down a very good size tree with it. My best survival knife i had till my RAT-5 showed up at the door was a KA-BAR US Marine Corp Fighting Knife. Not that thats a bad knife, but you can see how far fixed blades have come when you put them side by side. With the help of my buddy, i spent about a month or more looking at a survival type fixed blade knife. Very happy i went with the ESEE, and i see myself buying some more knives from them. From the papers that came with it, their target was the military... leaning twards the SERE side which is right up my alley. One of the best things about this knife is the divot in the handle for use in a primitive fire starting situation.... bow and drill that is.

Like i said, i looked at alot of knives before buying one. 100% sure i made the best choice.

If your thinking about giving this knife as a gift, pair it up with a few books from Amazon that i think are very good:
U.S. Air Force Survival Handbook
Survival Poaching

I just received my new ESEE-5 in the mail. This thing is a beast! Although I was fully aware of the specs, I am stills suprised with its weight and thickness. That being said, I don't see either of these as negative attributes.

The handle is full size. I have size 8.5 hands and find this grip to be very comfortable and well-proportioned. It has just the right amount of texture for excellent grip. I have seen some reviews where people got some serious blisters from prolonged use. This is conceivably an issue worth considering when using it.

The blade is VERY thick. I look forward to using it for splitting firewood in the field. This thickness should lend itself to excellent wedge action. Also, it will remove any hesistation to really beat on this thing with a baton. I got the plain blade and this thing is razor sharp. It has a nice tip that isn't too fine. The factory edge is well-ground. It should be an easy sharpen.

Mine came with the Kydex sheath. It is excellent! It also has a clip that attaches to the sheath for mounting on a belt. The sheath has a tension adjustment, but even on the lowest setting it isn't falling out. I'm sure over time and with temperature fluctuations, this will change and is an easy adjustment. Foreseeably, this knife could be carried tip-up in this sheath with little concern of it falling out. I plan to carry it on my backpack should strap. The Kydex itself is thicker than that used on my gun-holster, therefore it is very rugged.

This is 100% Made in the USA and ESEE's lifetime, no-questions-asked warranty is unbeatable. They will honor their warranty even if you bought it 20 years used.

This knife is not a practical every-day-carry (EDC) for the average citizen.

This is a beast of a knife. Fit, finish and workmanship is flawless. I'm a firm believer in full tang knives and this one is impressive. The glassbreaker (or bonecrusher) is a great feature also. Despite its size I have had no trouble getting a hair popping edge on it. Yes, 1095 will rust, but unlike other knives in it's class the coating on the ESEE is very durable. After I use it I always put a thin coat of CLP on it and have not seen one speck of rust. Takes less than a minute for "maintenance". It processes wood easily and would be a formidable tactical blade if necessary. I highly recommend this knife!
