5.0 out of 5 stars Fast AV with little overhead. December 23, 2011
I recently switched to Eset after being a Kaspersky user for several years. The problem is that most antivirus applications, including Mcafee and Symantec can really slow down your entire pc because they scan every file and process on your system. I also found that Kaspersky actually intefered when burning DVD's and CD's and caused the process to fail, forcing me to shut it off while burning.

I picked Eset because it installs fast, doesn't slow down my pc, does a pretty good job and for the most part I never know its even there, AND it still provides all of the same or better protection than the above slower AV's give.

It generally ranks up in the top 5 AV's on independent testing at:

There are occasionally better AV's, but usually at a higher cost or more system overhead.

I ran this on Windows 7 32bit as a trial, and then upgraded to Windows 7 64bit a few months ago and it still works fantastic. I have had no problem other than having to manually configure the firewall to allow UPnP and Remote Desktop to work.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it. December 8, 2011

Eset was for sale at a great price and I wanted to try it. There's been no problems and I find that it gets viruses and spamware well and quickly without hogging resources. It should be noted though that all 3 computers I installed eset on were Windows XP.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESET AntiVirus Review February 2, 2012
Verified Purchase
ESET was originallyr recommended to me in a business environment. We tried it and found it was much less intrusive with minimal system impact. My home network had been getting bogged down with my current AV software so I made the switch and won't be going back. The updates are frequent, do not slow down my system or cause lock ups. ESET is active, it has blocked some e-mails and websites. I'm very pleased and would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESET SMART SECURITY V.5 3 is great for 64 bit users October 26, 2012
I'm an IT professional and have always liked NOD32 Anti-Virus {made by ESET}. For the past 7 years I have gone back and forth between Kaspersky and NOD32 depending on which one had the better deal at my time of purchase. Since migrating to Win7 Ultimate 64 bit finding a decent interactive firewall was almost impossible.Under Windows XP I used Tiny Personal Firewall {which became Kerio} that works interactively where every time you launch a new internet enabled app you have to set rules to allow it permission to connect to the outside world. This is commonly called "learning" mode. Most of the commercially available firewalls only report to you when the communication is "incoming". I want my firewall to stop communication/warn me when apps try to phone home. This way "I" can decide what information goes out of my computer. These programmers/companies think they have a right to your information whether you like it or not. This puts the power back in your hands.

The way ESET has the firewall setup by default is for users that have no knowledge of firewall configuration. You have to change it to interactive learning mode so control of communications is in your hands. Once it's set for learning mode you set rules for each application as you launch them. Eventually you quit getting warning messages from the firewall and using the machine becomes mostly message free. This is the only way you can control what communications come in and go out when you're on the internet/local networks.

Here is what the documentation says for Interactive mode:
Interactive mode - Allows you to build a custom configuration for your Personal firewall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is power April 7, 2012
By sc58
Hello all. I had to leave a review after reading some of the comments here. I have used this for 3 or 4 years now after switching from AVG. Not massive complaints about AVG accept lack of control features, but it was free and worked 90 to 95% of the time with no bogging on the my systems.

First I am advance tech level, I work in a tier 4 data center on a team the monitors there severs and applications, so I know a little about this stuff. Second most of the reviews are directly related to the software its self no the seller. Next most of the people that have complained probably already had some type of infestation on there PC to start and did NOT follow the included directions on what to do if you THINK you might be "infested". (It's supper easy by the way)

This software is the best I have ever used and I have about 20 co-workers that will tell you the same. Most of the rest are to stubborn to switch or pay. (thy still use a free one with less options, that are working fine for there needs, not dissing any free software that works well!)

In conclusion, I am done, decided to keep this short and leave out negative rage, lol bye and GL on all your PC needs!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Antivirus, not so happy about the rest. July 23, 2012
Verified Purchase
First things first, as an Antivirus it very well may be the best one out there: Low overhead, fast scans, efficient, effective, no false positives, high detection rate and it doesn't slow booting times. Love it.

That said, I paid for the Smart Security suite because I also need decent Spam filtering and a Firewall component that would let me grant or block internet to specific programs/protocols and that's where the love affair turned sour...

The firewall seems to work fine as long as you don't mess with custom rules. For example, it started blocking Live Messenger even though I had absolutely no custom rule related to Live Messenger or any Windows component for that matter. I was only blocking highly specific third party software (from the competition, I'm a software developer).

Then we have the Spam filtering: false positive galore! I missed several important emails because of it. I understand Spam filtering is hard to get right, but if there's an email from a contact that has mailed me many times in the past AND I have also replied to him, labeling it as spam is unacceptable.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted to like this piece of software, I love how my machine boots faster than before but sadly, as I write this, I'm uninstalling it and going back to my previous internet security suite.

In a nutshell: If you're considering buying this and you don't really need all the extra stuff, buy ESET Antivirus instead. As an Antivirus product you'll definitively love it.
