Ideal for Intermediate Students,
By A Customer
This review is from: ESL Teacher's Holiday Activities Kit (Paperback)
I originally ordered this book to use with a class of beginning ESL students. ... Not a good idea. Unlike some of Claire's other works, this one consists primarily of reproducibles, and most of the tasks require at least an intermediate level of English. I later put the book to work in a class full of middle school students who had a fair command of the English language, and it was a great success. We used the worksheets as springboards to further dicussion, cultural comparisons, and even the occasional debate. Bottom line, the book is a worthwhile addition to your library if you're teaching any group other than beginners, if your students are interested in learning about western culture, and if you're adept at using reproducibles as a springboard to other activities.

great for teaching culture,

Excellent source of beginning and intermediate-level activities for the tired ESL teacher. Students can learn about American culture throughout the year. Have fun weaving this into your curriculum!Activities feature plenty of illustrations, puzzles, stories, and comprehension exercises. This is really great for low-level kids, they love to use it. --Michael Hobson

Great Resource!,

I also have an English school in Japan (as does the first reviewer who panned the book). I found it to be an invaluable resource. The explanations of the holidays are simple and easy to understand. Also there are many activities that can be used in class. I guess in the hands of an inept teacher this would be boring but I have used it with many different ages and levels with great results!

I teach English to Japanese students. A couple of the brief introductions to American holidays have been helpful and there are a few good pictures for coloring. On the whole, however, this book is outdated and contains very little useful material, especially considering the size of it.

The title tells you that it's a kit. And it is. It has many, many different kinds of complete activities for different holidays and special days. Once you give your ESL students a unit, it'll keep them busy for a week, if not more. Very interesting, handy and useful. It's a must for all ESL teachers.

Avoid like the plague,

This was as disappointing of a book as I've bought. I have found much better material on the internet for free. I own an English language school in Japan and this book is utterly useless. It might be of some use to you if your idea of teaching is to photocopy boring worksheets and pray that nobody notices. This book is a waste of money. There is nothing of value (...)
