If you're into the looks, it's an excellent entry level guitar. It has great pickups, 24 frets, a nice finish, and contrary to its appearance, the body has very comfortable contours. I don't like how it has only 1 volume and 1 tone knob, but it does simplify things for those just starting out. It holds tune well and can actually sound quite versatile, but I feel it's better with high gain. Overall build quality is great, but the tone/volume knobs or the input jack may become loose so keep tools handy to tighten them. I highly prefer this guitar (ESP Ltd) over Epiphones, Ibanez, and most Squiers in this price range. I use a gig bag with this guitar, I figure the unique shape would make it difficult to find a good fitting hardcase. Try one out before buying, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised.

Great for downtempo or death metal. Tuning capabilities are unparalleled. Not a very sharp tone. Don't use for anything but metal.
