5.0 out of 5 stars Man I love Konami soccer
First off,I am a huge fan of the game of soccer (as you americans call it). I just bought an X-box and have been waiting for a good soccer game to be released. Since I have been living in the states, I have become a huge fan of the MLS. So I was very pleased to see this title. I played the last version on the PS2 and I liked it quite a bit. MLS Extratime offers the most up to date rosters for the MLS and more than enough International teams. What I find annoying is that the World Cup is just around the corner and although having all the real MLS players is nice, it doesn't have real international players for the rest of the teams. I like the MLS and all but the World Cup is soccer's premiere event and not to have the international players not accurately represent is a big minus
One thing MLS Extratime does have is decent controls. The players feel pretty responsive when controling them. The through pass is also done very well, just like in ISS 98 for the N64. The coaching options are nice and the control of the set pieces is done well. Too bad all these nice features are completely overlooked due to the most annoying player switching I have ever seen in a sports game. I would like to say that no sports game should have automatic switching of your players. Combined with manual switching makes even more frustrating. It's really annoying with you shoot a shot and it's blocked and instead of retaining control of your player it switches to some player not even in the run of play.

Graphic fortunately, this is an aspect of MLS Extratime 2002 that wasn't royally [messed] up. Although the player models aren't as good as EA's FIFA, MLS's face models are much more superior. The players really look very similar to the real life counterparts. The animation of the character is done pretty well and the stadium environments are better the EA's FIFA.

The Compute AI stinks in this game. I'm beating the computer defenders like they were drugged up before the game. Also it's so easy to score on the computer goalie. Just do the same move over and over again, cut in out and shoot, works every time. Pretty soon I was crushing the computer 10 to 0. I swear there's more scoring in this game than there is in hockey, which is not realistic. The game feels very arcade like because of this.

MLS Extra time may be presented like a real ESPN TV soccer match but in no way does it accurately depicts what goes on in a real soccer game. This is a great game if you don't care for realism in your soccer game.

Konami has the best soccer simulation engine in the world, and I have enjoyed every ISS game they have made. This version is way better than what Konami put out last year. They fixed some of the problems, that just got in the way of fluid game play. I am dissapointed that there are no European teams, but eh the Latin America Clubs addition is a nice filler. There are no real names except for the MLS, but with the cool create a team and player mode I found it easy to get around that. This mode really is a shining point to the game. I am currently playing the 5-year franchise mode and this is another super cool addition. The only draw back is you can't simulate your games, you have to play all the way through. But that's minor. You can also play a variety of different cups. The scenario mode is also fun, but some of these are almost impossible in all-star mode. There's also a training mode, where you can practice your plays, one-twos and the like. There's even a coach who gives you small tips, this is a nice touch. The game play is great, and it will have me hooked for many hours to come. The multi-player battles are epic and make this game worthy of purchase alone. The biggest improvement form last years game has to be the sound. Last year did nothing for me... The stadium ambience is awesome. You can hear the players talking, there's also some good ambient sounds, all the sound FX are on the money and there's even a PA announcer who has some pretty funny things to say. The commentary is also awesome, I haven't gotten tired of it at all. Jack Edwards has great intensity and intelligent things to say. I don't understand a word Luis Tapia has to say, but I love hearing goaaallll! This is a great game and I recommend it to anyone who loves soccer. FIFA has nothing on this game. I give it a 9 out of 10.

2.0 out of 5 stars somehow got worse after N64's ISS 98., April 7, 2002

Bad news first: International Teams - they used to use fake names, now everything is fake - no real uniforms, players aren't based on anything real, and somehow the U.S. is the best international team.
Gameplay: no shoulder tackles like in ISS 98, the line-up menus are more difficult to navigate through, and the gameplay isn't as fast as it used to be.

Good news - if you're a big MLS fan - it has all the stadiums and players.

But, I like my international play, and hate EA's FIFA series. What am I to do?

3.0 out of 5 stars MLS Extra Time 2002, July 9, 2002

Although you'll initially curse the rigid control system, ExtraTime soon comes together as an above average soccer game. It runs at a smooth 60 frames per second at all times, there's virtually no load time, and it's got a great set of modes and options. The objective-based Scenario Mode in particular adds a welcome dose of originality to the standard array of modes found in almost each and every soccer game. On the flipside, there are also a number of problems that keep this game from being a favorite. In-game strategy options aside, it's simply not as well-rounded a package as last year's FIFA, lacks key licenses, and plays nowhere near as well as Konami's other soccer offerings. Konami will always have a special place in the hearts of soccer fans in Europe and Japan -- I realize that the US is still a niche market for soccer games, but it would be nice if we could all get to play the same game next time around. Since Xbox owners didn't get the superior FIFA 2002, this is currently the only MLS game around -- so give it a look if EA's World Cup game isn't your cup of tea.

4.0 out of 5 stars After 2 hours, April 7, 2002

I got this game yesterday and have played it for about 2 hours. It is my second game for my xbox. I haven't played any earlier versions of mls or anyother soccer game for that matter. In the two hours I have been playing the game I have scored one goal off a cornerkick. The amateur setting is pretty tough. In particular how the screen is displayed makes knowing where your guys are to pass to pretty difficutlt. I would guess about 70% of passes are done blindly (no matter what camera angle is chosen). Overall I find the game pretty entertaining, though I have a feeling it requires far more effort from a player than I wish to spend to become proficient. Maybe if you have some gaming skills the game is easier. Still I wish I could see more of the field at once so I could understand where my guys are. Still if you have to get your soccer fix this is the only way for 2 more weeks...Personally I am holding my breath for the david beckam game...
