Editorial Reviews

On Valentine's Day 1993, 17-year-old Bethel High School basketball star Allen Iverson was bowling in Hampton, Va., with five high school friends. It was supposed to be an ordinary evening, but it became a night that defined Iverson's young life. A quarrel soon erupted into a brawl pitting Iverson's young black friends against a group of white patrons. The fallout from the fight and the handling of the subsequent trial landed the teenager, which some considered the nation's best high school athlete, in jail and sharply divided the city along racial lines. Oscar nominee Steve James (Hoop Dreams) returns to his hometown of Hampton, where he once played basketball, to take a personal look at this still disputed incident and examine its impact on Iverson and the shared community.

I bought this film for my high-school students and they found it completely gripping. Most had not been aware of the complexity of Alan Iverson's childhood and youth and many have similar family stories to his. they also appreciated James' interchange with his African-American cameraman, and the lack of a tidy ending ot the story. Very egood film; highly recommended.

Great footage, research, and organization.

I really enjoyed Steve James and his look at a controversial incident that occurred over 15 years ago in Hampton, VA. His personal reflections & use of interviews with his Mom in this piece was phenomenal. James does a great job to show both sides of the situation! I believe people who love AI will enjoy this. People who don't like AI will also enjoy.

This director made the spellbindingingly great HOOP DREAMS documentary . High points for me were , Allen getting his High School education (and the uplifting story about that) and the fact that Mr. Iverson made good and got some happy and got to be a pro athlete . All great stuff . I wanted to know about Allen Iverson the human being and man . The focus of this 30 "films by" 30 filmmakers was FAR too narrow and negative for me . Tell me the man's story for goodness sake . One incident does not a film made nor is a life defined by . Very disappointing film to me . I now know ONLY a few tiny aspects of a GREAT athlete's life and humanity . Bummer + a missed opportunity by the director....Benstarbuck

This here is what true reporting is about. I Thought that Steve James did an exceptional impartial job of reporting the trial and life of Allen Iverson from Newport News Virginia were the director was from. I definitely recommend that you watch this unfold and your make your on judgment! It's part biography and investigative reporting!

Iverson did not agree to this film so its not as good as it could have been if he him self were involved. I would say one of the weaker 30 for 30 films and not much depth to it because its mostly covering the brawl. Even if an Iverson fan you might be disappointed with this one!
