4.0 out of 5 stars A good game with room for improvement
This game is a pretty solid game. The graphics and play animations are really good. Many of the faces are correct, as well as the body shapes, mainly a star or two from each team looks really correct. You can add features to all your favorite players that you know they have such as there hair style, sweat bands, knee braces, sock length, head band, or elastic bands for...

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst basketball games ever!, January 20, 2002
This review is from: ESPN NBA 2Night (Video Game)
This game is terrible, I don't know how anyone could give this game 5 stars and that people reading give them good votes, if you don't know how bad this game is don't vote YES! This is terrible, it is extremly easy for the ball to be stolen, the players son't look like they look like in real life, only a little tiny bit. The game is horrendously slow, it's like playing NBA2K1 in slow motion, really. When a player shoot he does not even face the basket until the second he releases the ball from his hand. I could not believe how bad it was until I got it, the box of the game was more entertaining than the game itself, the only way you could get use to the controls of this game is if you force yourself to play it and don't have any other games, or maybe it's just that you haven't played any other good basketball games like the 2K series or ANYTHING ELSE!!!!! I reccomend anything over this! You can get the ball stolen form you 2 feet away from the player your passing to! The only thing I even liked about this game was 1. the digital intro with highlights of many eye-popping NBA plays , and 2. the fact that you can dunk over people. But if you want to waste your money and time, then go right ahead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Break out the thesaurus-putird, awful, dreadful, ghastly.., May 30, 2001
This review is from: ESPN NBA 2Night (Video Game)
Folks, I cannot begin to adequately articulate my displeasure with this game. It is perhaps the WORST video game I've ever played, and that includes the basketball game for the original Atari 2600.

Okay, maybe it's not quite that bad. The graphics are better with ESPN NBA 2Night. But my expectations for the old 2600 basketball don't come anywhere near what I expect from a "sports sim" (and I use that term VERY loosely here) for the so-called Next Generation of video games.

I am not an avid gamer. I typically stick with the sports sims, occasionally breaking away for a good combat game or an over-the-top - but fun - caricature of a sports game (i.e. NFL Blitz, NBA Jam). Even when sticking my usual video gaming modus operandi, I consider myself a novice, spending several games (maybe days) at the lowest level of a game just to acclimate myself to it.

That said, there is so much wrong with this game. Allow me to share a few things with you:

1. Very unrealistic gameplay. I started out playing as the Lakers against the New Jersey Nets at the lowest level. Stephon Marbury was as athletic as Michael Jordan, throwing down no fewer than 6 highlight-reel dunks, including a leaning two-handed windmill. Three of those dunks were done OVER SHAQUILLE O'NEAL!!

Speaking of the Shaq-daddy, he runs the floor with the grace, speed and agility of Alan Iverson. Simply put, players do not really play like their real-life counterparts.

In addition, computer-controlled players on my team simply sat back and did nothing as balls rattled around on the backboard.

2. Bad Graphics and animations. People have been saying great things about the graphics on this game. I don't see it at all. They're no better than those found on NBA Live 2001. (Whereas NBA Live has actually photos for roster photos, ESPN 2Night uses these hideous computer images.)

In addition, the game has this nasty glitch where your players will frequently walk right through an opposing player. It's as if the players have this magical ability to pass through solid objects! Boy, talk about a "special move!" It's stunningly bad!

3. Confusing/Inconsistent computer AI. During one play, Keith Van Horne leapt over 2-3 defenders (including Horace Grant and Shaquille O'Neal) and sent home a thundering tomahawk dunk. (Van Horne also had Jordan-like abilities.)

As unrealistic as THAT is, a few plays later Van Horne had the lane to himself - not a player within the 3 point line - and he pulled up shot a short 3 foot jump shot. Inconsistent at best.

BOTTOM LINE... I usually am very easy on video games; it takes a lot to unnerve me. But this game did it for me. The ONLY reason it has one star is because 'zero stars' was not an option.

Save your money and wait for NBA 2K2 in the fall.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good game with room for improvement, February 25, 2001

This game is a pretty solid game. The graphics and play animations are really good. Many of the faces are correct, as well as the body shapes, mainly a star or two from each team looks really correct. You can add features to all your favorite players that you know they have such as there hair style, sweat bands, knee braces, sock length, head band, or elastic bands for their wrists, which is cool. The announcing flows pretty well, but sometimes they do get repititve. The gameplay is a little slow, but there are some cool, moves, and good jams. A couple things this game doesn't have are street ball, and a turbo button. However over all this is a very good game, and I think it is better than NBA LIVE 2001 for ps2. This game is a good buy.

Don't buy/rent this game. It is bad. The control is awful, players stop moving completely when they come into contact with an opposing player. Secondly, they will not move after you fake out a defender, the "killer cross-over dribble" is far from "killer". The create a player is cool, but the gameplay is awful. There is no draft like advertised. Just don't get this game, you have been warned

This game is the bomb. Don't listen to the people who say there is no turbo, just use the analog stick. It has incredible graphics and great moves. The only flaw is that it is a little bit to easy, but other than that, you should buy this game.

Nbalive2001 is great and nba hoopz kicks a$$. but this game just doesn't do it for me. i'm a serious gamer and i have hoopz and live and this game deosn't even come close.(i rented it). I know live doesn't have franchise mode but at least they didn't advertise it then not put it in the game(like nba2nite did). graphics are nothin to do a dance about and gameplay is horrible. But as i have read some people have found to enjoy it. so not knowing the people reading this review i suggest renting it and find out for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than NBA2001, February 28, 2001

OK..I've been buying EASPORTS NBA Live series since..well..since a long time ago...and I have to admit when I rented NBA LIVE 2001 for PS2 I was less than thrilled...I actually like the PS version better..and certainly it couldn't compete with Dreamcast NBA2k1.

So on a whim I bought NBA2night and I have to say I'm pretty darn pleased. It FEELS more like an NBA game than LIVE...yeah I miss the turbo mode...yeah, it's slower pace and not as smooth sometimes...but it offers good animations and for the most part exciting gameplay..everyone seems to like the dunk animations but I think they look a little "arcade" -like..guys are too high over the rim...Anyway, I digress.. All in All this game is tight..I haven't played Shootout yet..but I'm sticking with ESPN..afterall, they are the world wide leaders:)

2.0 out of 5 stars Horrible!, March 31, 2001

People, don't buy this game...it sucks!!! I love ESPN but their videogames .... Let me tell you some of the flaws in this game...no speed burst, you have to hold an extra button just to pump fake a shot (most games you need just to tap the shoot action button), and the colors are too dark. The default control is placed in a way where it's difficult to learn the game. The only plus to this game is that it has pretty good graphics. Don't waste your money buying this game. Sorry, ESPN.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible, October 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: ESPN NBA 2Night (Video Game)
this game was unbelievably bad. i just got nba live 2001 and there is no comparison. nba 2 night was horrible. the graphics were awful, the gameplay was even worse. there are several bugs which are really really annoying. the only decent feature was the create a player option which was much more detailed that nba live 2001. honestly, nba live 2000 for playstation 1 was much much better than nba 2 night.
