This eleven chapter book captures pivotal moments and lessons along Ledisi's journey that help you understand the power of encouragement and discouragement as you reach for your dreams. To think that without these moments, we may not have known this wonderful woman and exceptional artist is simply amazing. Ledisi details these moments ranging from her love of New Orleans and Apple Now And Laters to the sinking lows of abuse and her fateful encounters with singing greats. This book is uniquely woven with personal affirmations, moving poems, touching lyrics, gorgeous photographs (love pg. 38), and amazing quotes from greats like Muhammad Ali (my fave quote), Joyce Meyer, and Mrs. Obama. What I love most are the portions that recall her love and admiration for her mother. The stories about her mother and various strong females in her family are so vibrant you feel like you are in that Baptist church with her great-aunt or in the audience as her mother sang. I realized as I read that the moments I watched from home (Grammy Awards, Black Girls Rock, etc) or had the pleasure of seeing live were not only beautiful in sound but beautiful because they were an extension of this great journey and a moving inspiration to always press forward in life.

My loved ones and I have already benefited from Ledisi's touching words. I emailed "Rise Above It All" to a friend going through a rough patch and she was really touched and encouraged. That's the essence (haha!!) of the book! Readers will use her lessons to enhance their lives and be made aware that there are still moments left to cherish, scars left to heal, great love to be found, regret to be released, failures to be forgiven, victories to be valued, and uncovered beauty to be embraced.

This was a very uplifting and inspiring read. Everyone has a story to tell and it was nice to hear Ledisi's. Had the opportunity to meet her at the Book Festival and she really is a nice, down to earth person.

In recent years, hip-hop icons from Eminem (The Way I Am) to Jay-Z (Decoded) have written memoirs in which they ruminate about their private lives while deconstructing the deeper meaning of their poetry and song lyrics. R&B diva Ledisi is the latest star to take just such an approach in terms of an autobiography.

Overall, Ledisi paints a stylish self-portrait, here, via a vibrant mix of artistically-illustrated rhymes, proverbs, photographs, personal anecdotes and introspective journal entries. Wearing her heart on her sleeve, the unguarded author tackles such subjects as love, forgiveness and faith with an enviable vulnerability.

In the chapter on Beauty, she suggests that "When you don't know how beautiful you are, you will always be in search of happiness." By opus' end, expect to feel oh so nurtured by the practical pearls of wisdom reflecting the essence of the insightful and likable lady who goes by Ledisi.

I bought this for a bookclub and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. You never know what a person has been through to get where they are in life. It is not a normal novel/text read - it is more like an illustrative journal and I highly recommend it.

Her music and this book will never get old with me. I have seen this woman in concert three times and the love she exudes from her passion of singing is so refreshing to watch and her voice, wow.
