This eleven chapter book captures pivotal moments and lessons along Ledisi's journey that help you understand the power of encouragement and discouragement as you reach for your dreams. To think that without these moments, we may not have known this wonderful woman and exceptional artist is simply amazing. Ledisi details these moments ranging from her love of New Orleans and Apple Now And Laters to the sinking lows of abuse and her fateful encounters with singing greats. This book is uniquely woven with personal affirmations, moving poems, touching lyrics, gorgeous photographs (love pg. 38), and amazing quotes from greats like Muhammad Ali (my fave quote), Joyce Meyer, and Mrs. Obama. What I love most are the portions that recall her love and admiration for her mother. The stories about her mother and various strong females in her family are so vibrant you feel like you are in that Baptist church with her great-aunt or in the audience as her mother sang. I realized as I read that the moments I watched from home (Grammy Awards, Black Girls Rock, etc) or had the pleasure of seeing live were not only beautiful in sound but beautiful because they were an extension of this great journey and a moving inspiration to always press forward in life.
My loved ones and I have already benefited from Ledisi's touching words. I emailed "Rise Above It All" to a friend going through a rough patch and she was really touched and encouraged. That's the essence (haha!!) of the book! Readers will use her lessons to enhance their lives and be made aware that there are still moments left to cherish, scars left to heal, great love to be found, regret to be released, failures to be forgiven, victories to be valued, and uncovered beauty to be embraced. You will be enlightened to it all in this book and just in case it's not sinking in the "Hey, you..." passages give you an inspirational poke to increase your understanding. It's packaged perfectly to fit in a handbag so you can carry these experiences, blessings, lessons, kind words, and inspiration with you anywhere. This is definitely not a "finish and file" type of book. You will definitely read it again and reference it often as I plan to.
