One nuance to all of this is that if you are not completely comfortable in the Hebrew language this book will not be the best fit for you. Again, this is not an interlinear so there are no Strong's numbers and the apparatus will be lost on you if you are unsure how to navigate through it. Ultimately, this is a great product and I am so pleased it is here.
The front of the book contains the regular ESV copyright, preface and explanation of features. These are followed by a 3/4-page explanation of the way page breaks work in the printing of the ESV in order to match the text of BHS.
The back of the book contains the regular BHS title page and the English preface, but not the French, Spanish, or Latin translations of the preface. Then comes the regular BHS list of sigla (with Latin introduction) and the English/German key to the sigla.
Between the two ends of the book, BHS appears on left-hand pages; ESV appears on the opposite right-hand pages.
The BHS text is a reproduction of the standard edition, but it has been printed ever-so-slightly larger.
The main ESV text is printed using a large font. However, the ESV footnotes are, as seems to be case with other recent ESV printings, impossibly small. There is absolutely no reason why the ESV footnotes could not have been printed at least twice as large as they have been. The printing of the footnotes is truly abysmal.
The ESV pages contain only the regular ESV text, and nothing related to BHS. For example, the end-of-book masorah are not translated. (But you probably weren't expecting any help with the masorah.)
There is one major thing the publishers should have done in this regard, but didn't. For historical reasons, the traditional Hebrew chapter/verse numbering system sometimes differs from the traditional English chapter/verse numbering system.Read more ›
