About the Artist

Putumayo World Music was established in 1993 to introduce people to the music of the world's cultures. The label grew out of Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. Co-founder Michael Kraus joined Dan to launch Putumayo World Music and establish a non-traditional sales division. Putumayo World Music has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company's motto: "guaranteed to make you feel good!" Putumayo's CD covers feature the distinctive art of Nicola Heindl, whose colorful, folkloric style represents one of Putumayo's goals: to connect the traditional to the contemporary. By combining appealing music and visuals with creative retail marketing, Putumayo has developed a unique brand identity - a rarity in today's artist-based music industry.

Euro Groove is a collection of cool, contemporary grooves from the European continent's leading musicians, producers and DJs. Some of the artists on Euro Groove will be familiar to international audiences. England's Chumbawamba rose to unlikely stardom in 1997 with their single "Tubthumping," but have gone on to play music ranging from pop-influenced dance and world music to acoustic folk. The band is generally influenced by anarchist political stances and irreverent attitude to authority, as evident on "Jacob's Ladder (Not in My Name)," initially released as a limited edition anti-war single in 2003. Germany's !DelaDap and 2raumwohnung are welcomed back to the Groove series as they make their second appearances on a Putumayo release. !DelaDap, which means "to dance" or simply "to groove" in the Roma language of their heritage, contributes the gypsy-esque "Le Shin," while 2raumwohnung, whose name translates to "2 Room Apartment," contributes the driving groove "Mädchen Mit Plan." France's love of R&B is displayed with the inclusion of Martial's "Cette Fille" and Mouss et Hakim's "Mina". Toufic Farroukh, a Lebanese musician and long-time French resident, is a leader in French and world music fusion as evidenced on "Destins et Désirs."

Other featured artists include Germany's Jazzamor, Spain's Guateque All Stars featuring Shiva, and Italy's Mystic Diversions and Fiamma Fumana, who appropriately "Check In" to round out this collection.

"Euro Groove" is one of Putumayo's best Continental releases. It blends, merges, and grooves "Old Europe" (France, Germany, Italy) with the "New Europe" (Hungary, Czech Republic) There's a consistently smooth jazz theme throughout. Luckily, it's soulful smooth jazz. It's full of passion.

It opens energetically with the Arabic-flavored "Destins et Desirs" from the Franco-Lebanese duo of Toufic Farroukh and Jeanne Added. Jazzamor's "Nuit Magique" and 2raumwohnung's "Madchen Mit Plan" show the jazzier side of Germany. Teutonic jazz exists. One can imagine these songs playing in some smoke-filled Berlin cabaret. Italy grooves in a more humorous way. Forget the refined fashion shows in Milan. Fiamma Fumana's "Check in" and Mystic Diversions' "E Pa-Pa" are both campy and fashionable. "Check in" takes a sly look at the constantly life on the road for musicians. These songs are tongue in cheek... passionately planted in the cheek. !DelaDap, a Gypsy band with members from the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria is, unfortunately, not as well known as Balkan Beat Box (Balkan Beat Box) and Gogol Bordello (Super Taranta) Their "Le Shin" blends gypsy violin with bossa nova. Martial brings in European rap with "Cette Fille." Guateque All Stars and Shiva have the loveably cheesy "Superwhirly." Chumbawamba, famous for their Chumbawamba- Tubthumper contribute the anti-war "Jacob's Ladder", using a grim story from WWII, albeit with a pop/Celtic blend. Imagine Celtic Thunder or Riverdance making political commentary. The final track, Mouss et Hakim's "Mina", is a critique of Islamic fundamentalism. Think of Irshad Manji (The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith) set to an Arabic-flavored hip-hop beat.

"Euro Groove" shows, musically, that one can make serious social commentary with a catchy beat. The tone of this compilation is relaxed enough that one can imagine pouring a glass of pinot noir at a Parisian bistro, watching people along the boulevards. This compilation is like a delicious combination of French cabernet, German marzipan, and Italian pasta. Bon appetit!
