4.0 out of 5 stars eVGA e-GeForce 8400 GTS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express Graphics Card
It is an excellent video card for the price. It is not the most advanced card for high-end gaming but it works great on Call to Duty 4. Windows Vista rates the card 3.5 on its performance scale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Card But Check the Driver Install, August 7, 2009
This review is from: EVGA 512-P2-N738-LR GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express 1.0 Graphics Card (Personal Computers)
Picked up this card for our Dell E520 after our original 256mb card fried. Great price and 512mb - installed and evidently windows installed it's own drivers - performance score went from 3.3 (motherboard card) to 3.2! Played with settings then installed driver on CD that came with card - said older driver than installed but tried it - voila performance score of 1.0! arggh - After reboot windows did not recognize the card and back to stock VGA adapter. I then went to Nvidia website and downloaded latest driver - installed and adjusted performance settings to "best apearance" and tweaked the Nvidia control panel video settings to 50% - ran test again and overall performance now at 4.0! Graphics score of 5.9 and gaming 4.3 - not too bad! Videos now run beautiful full screen HQ setting on 23" monitor - overall PC performance, screen loads etc ROCK NOW! VERY HAPPY FINALLY!
Worth the purchase - also no issues with fan noise at all - very quiet.

4.0 out of 5 stars 22" widescreen displays perfectly w/ this card, November 3, 2008
This review is from: EVGA 512-P2-N738-LR GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express 1.0 Graphics Card (Personal Computers)
Bought this to fix flickering and distortion on new 22" Soyo monitor. Previous video setup didn't offer native resolution setting of 1680x1050, 60hz. The 8400gs card does, and that made all the difference. Setup was smooth, documentation good. Only downside is some extra fan noise since card has its own fan. (Note--before installing, I used Windows Device Manager to disable my old CPU-integrated video adapter.)

The eVGA GeForce 8400 GS is a nice little card. I used it in a Linux system and had no problem with it. My experience with eVGA graphics cards has always been excellent - great performance, great price, great warranty. They're always the first ones I look to when getting a new card.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, affordable card, June 21, 2010

This review is from: EVGA 512-P2-N738-LR GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express 1.0 Graphics Card (Personal Computers)
I watch a lot of movies and TV shows on my computer, many of them in hi-def. My embedded video chip worked fine for a while, but soon began to heat up after half an hour of use. So while this video card actually brought down my Windows Experience Index to 3.8, I can watch hours of HD video without this card heating up to 120 degrees Celsius, unlike my onboard video. (I'm guessing the onboard video had a higher rating because it had access to all of my RAM) Installation was a breeze. I updated the drivers when I first installed it and had no problem. Another excellent fact is that my computer only has a 300 Watt power supply, but this 350 Watt card works fine. The only problem so far with this card is that the fan is loud. My computer was fairly quiet before and now it is a little quieter than my XBox 360 (which is LOUD).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great business card, March 19, 2010

This review is from: EVGA 512-P2-N738-LR GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express 1.0 Graphics Card (Personal Computers)
I wanted to get a card that will provide better performance than the built in card on the motherboard without having to put in a new power supply. This card fit the bill very nicely. It is well designed, not noisy (even with built in fan), not power hungry and runs cool.

Win 7 graphics scores:
Desktop performance for Windows Aero went from 3.2 to 3.8 (18.75% performance boost...nice)
3D business and gaming graphics performance went from 3.2 to 5.3 (65.62% performance boost....exceptional)

This card has allowed me to see more details from "all" the applications that I am running. The icons, tool bars, wallpapers, desktop themes and internet/netflix viewing added more layers of details.

The internet experience is markedly better (graphics and responsiveness) regardless of which browser I use (Firefox or IE8). I'm very happy with the cost performance ratio. Please note that this was not purchased for gaming as there are many other cards that can perform much better at more than double the cost and having to buy a new power supply. Having said that, if you are looking for a performance boost using day to day programs and internet/netflix you need to consider this card:)

System:
4Gig, 1 Terabyte drive, EVGA 8400GS & external 1.5 Terabye drive

Win7, Office 2007 Professional, VMware (used for testing XP, OSX, Vista & Ubuntu installs - hardened), Adobe 9 Professional, Office 2010 Beta and various information security tools used for hardening, testing and auditing network systems. Windows Media Center looks great and remote desktop connection to/from the computer is more responsive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all!, February 16, 2010
This review is from: EVGA 512-P2-N738-LR GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express 1.0 Graphics Card (Personal Computers)
I recently picked one of these up from Amazon here, and put it in my eMachines desktop. Let me say it makes a WORLD of difference.

Simply put, here are the numbers from Windows 7 Experience score.

Desktop Performance for Aero. Onboard Video - 3.5 With this card - 3.7 (with latest drivers!)

3D Business and gaming graphic performance. Onboard Video - 3.2 With this card - 5.3 Thats a huge difference!

Pros,
Easy to install. I've heard horror stories of people having to find drivers for this card. I installed it, turned on my system and Windows 7 did everything for me. Installed the latest drivers AND removed the original videos drivers. Nothing to it.

Cons,
As stated in other reviews this sucker is loud. I wasn't ever able to hear my computer running before, but now I can hear it from a good six feet away.

All in all I would rate this card 4 out of 5 stars. If it was a little bit more quiet it would be a 5* for sure. Easy to install, and for most people 512MB of DDR2 ram is enough. For example, I am able to play the Ghostbusters Video Game with this card.. and you can ask any PC gamer how image intensive that game is.

This card is a winner! A loud winner, but a winner never less!

This is the second EVGA card that I have purchased. I don't use it for anything too demanding - it's just in a PC running my home media server on Windows XP ([...])

So the first EVGA card (older model, now discontinued) that I bought a couple of years ago died. I opened the computer and looked at the card: several capacitors had blown. I called EVGA technical support to ask about warranty replacement, and was told it was out of warranty. So I asked for a recommendation for a replacement and he said to get this one. Why did I do that? Because when I called tech support I wasn't on hold for more than 3 minutes, and talked to a knowledgeable, helpful person who was ... uh, knowledgeable and helpful.

Also: the card is cheap, the drivers are solid, and it can drive two monitors at once.

This review is from: EVGA 512-P2-N738-LR GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express 1.0 Graphics Card (Personal Computers)
Bought this card for brand new Compaq desktop to be able to use DirecTV new DVR PC application (Direct2pc) which requires a higher performance video card to run. Very easy to install and works well .. good value for the performance. This card has a fan, so, there is some slight additional fan noise from the PC now .. not too bad. Only issue was the card looked like it was opened prior to receipt (static bag was not sealed) and CD enclosed did not have VISTA drivers .. obtained those from the mfr's web site. Other than that, the card works beautifully as advertised .. A-OK.
