Best Midrange Card for the Money!,
By Ken W. "Dr. Drift" (Midwest United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: EVGA 512-P3-N975-AR e-GeForce 9800 GT 512MB DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card (Personal Computers)
First off, here are my specs: Dell Inspiron 531 with an AMD 64 X2 4400+ @ 2.4ghz, 3gb ram, and a 250gb hd.
Trust me, I spent countless hours researching which video card was best for me. I wanted to run a good amount of new games without worrying about not meeting the system requirements. If you've read reviews online of the 8800GT/9800GT you'll notice that it's THE midrange card for the performance minded user. I can tell you that this is definitely the case. With my old card (XFX 8600GT XXX overclocked to 620mhz) I was able to score 5329 in 3DMARK06 and run a pretty good amount of games like F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty 4 at medium to medium-high settings with good FPS. With this 9800GT I was able to score an 8368 in 3DMARK06 and run Call of Duty 4, Medal of Honor Airborne, and other games like this at maximum settings (with AA) and get great framerates. Crysis will even run well at medium settings. You'll definitely notice how much better the 9800GT performs. If you want to kick the performance up a bit, EVGA even includes an overclocking utility that lets you make adjustments and monitor the gpu's temperature on screen while playing games. Now, all that being said, make sure that your power supply unit is at least 400w like the specs ask. I had to upgrade my Dell's puny 300w PSU with a better unit. That's really the only con I can think of. Granted, it's not EVGA's fault that my power supply wasn't up to spec. All in all, the EVGA 9800GT is a very solid card that I'm very glad with purchasing. And it definitely fits my PCI-E x16 slot.

Excellent piece of hardware. You get more bang for your buck with this card. Overclocking is great too. Had a little problem with heat but that can be easily controlled. Love the card! Just imagine what you can do with two.

EVGA 9800GT is a great product. Better than the 8800 GT and not as bulky. Would recommend.

EVGA did it again. I recently bought this video card with an Abit Fatal1ty mobo, a Q6600, 8GB OCZ Sli-Ready 800Mhz, Vista Ultimate 64bits and an Antec PSU 650Watts and is getting me beyond of what I though... I am running Crysis video game at very high settings (all settings) without any glitch in performance. Same with Assassins Creed, Need for Speed Undercover and Call of Duty 5, all of them at very high specs without any complain.
Very highly recommended. Other though: If you are planning to make a gaming PC, think well about having a very good PSU.

I was surprised how much better World of Warcraft looked after installing this card. I am not a techie but had no trouble putting it in my computer. Everything went very well.

Waited for a long time to get a reasonably priced graphics card so that I can play Half-life 2. Allows me to play at great frame rates and it should last a couple of years. Installation was a snap. No problems with it so far.

WOULD NOT RUN IN PCI-E 16X SLOT, ONLY PCI-E 8X!,

I have a brand new Gigabyte GA-EP45 motherboard. When I installed the EVGA 9800GT onto the PCI-E 16x slot, Windows XP refused to enable it from the Device Manager. The screen would go blank with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen when I tried. When doing a direct Nvidia driver installation, the screen would blank out during the installation. Windows XP would then revert to it's VGASave drivers which resulted in a slow computer! If I restarted the computer, it would freeze on the Windows XP start screen just before going to the desktop. Yet when the card was put in the PCI-E 8X slot it ran fine all around.
I then tried a PNY 9600GT and RADEON HD4850 card which was fine at 16X with no problems. My power supply is a Antec Earthwatts 500W. |
