5.0 out of 5 stars Support 3 monitors with only one card !! August 23, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is just my first impression. Today is the 2nd day after the installation.
I have 2 1980x1200 monitors and 1080p HDTV connected to my desktop PC. I had to have 2 nVidia video cards to connect the 3 monitors. (I never tried eyefinity cards)

I'm not a gamer but I see a lot of HD videos, so I was looking for a $80-$120 range video card which can support 3 monitors. I like this video card with the following reasons:

(1) All 3 monitors work perfectly (2 monitors via DVI and HDTV via miniHDMI)
(2) The rating in Windows Experience Index is now 7.1 while my old video card GeForce 9800GT is 6.9 and GeForce GT 240 is 6.8.
(3) The temperature is around 40c when I watch a HD video. GeForce 9800GT was 70c.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review on 3-screen utilization. August 18, 2012
PROs:

Dual slot coolink sink, 30-38C normal idle/video playback operating temps.

New version of Nvidia surround lets windows maximize within individual screens rather than across all 3. Now you must go full-screen for a spanned image which makes perfect sense, CCC has yet to match this feature in eyefinity (I wish they would).

No tearing on any displays with all standard DVI and HMDI connections unlike AMD cards which require you to buy a $20-$30 active adapter only to experience tearing on one connection type or the other, although the tearing has finally been fixed for many cards with CCC 12.6 Regardless, not having to buy that adaptor is a huge plus assuming you don't have a DP compatible display.

CONs:

Minor bug in current software version for 3 screen Nvidia surround causes windows to offset individual screens when maximized if the taskbar is on the right or left side of a screen rather than the top or bottom. Likely to be fixed in the future.

Fan isn't the quietest at 30% speed during idle/low use, however it doesn't go above 40% under full load using the default fan profile.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

Previously the cheapest way to acheive 5760x1080 Nvidia Surround was to SLI 2 GTX460s. Now it can be done with a single low power, low temp, $90 GPU. It's a big step forward. AMDs comparable cards have better performance at this price point but for those doing 3 screens the GT 640 is ultimately a better buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three monitors - Sweet! November 28, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I have three monitors on my business workstation and was previously using two EXTREMELY noisy XFX 9600 GSO video cards to drive them. When I heard that the GT 640 cards support three monitors I jumped at the chance to replace those howling monsters. Take a good look at your setup because you'll probably need to order some special video cables or adapters. This card has two DVI and one mHDMI. I had to buy both a cable and an adapter for the mHDMI connection. I can't offer any opinion about gaming quality or frame rates since this is a work machine but I can confirm that it drives three 24" monitors at 1920x1080, it's fairly cheap, whisper quiet, and doesn't require a PCI-Express power connector. Sweet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great GPU for a great price January 29, 2013
By Julian

After doing a lot of research on the best graphics card to pair with the Gigabyte Z77-WIFI motherboard (ITX) I settled on the GT 640 and couldn't be happier with the decision. Despite what the price and size hint at, this card can do 3 displays at once and can run (not extremely demanding) games on high settings. If I had one minor annoyance with the card it would be the use of mini-HDMI, but it's not a big deal at all. Very Hackintosh friendly.

Important: It should be noted that the GT 640 comes in two flavors: this one, which takes up two expansion slots on your case (but has a bigger fan and vents the air out of the case) and another that only takes up one expansion slot. They share the same name and designation so when you search for GT 640 they appear right next to each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't worry about the PSU January 29, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
First off, for the price, this card is wonderful.

But as for the PSU requirement it states... I put it in a terrible computer (came with 2GB DDR2 RAM, 2GHz Athlon II single core) with a 250W PSU. As long as you don't have a lot of extra add ons, you can run this. Using a 3 pin CPU fan, basic Chassis fan, 2x2GB RAM, and an Athlon II x3 450, it runs perfectly. Luckily I had enough amps on the 12v rail though. That is what you need to watch for. Of course I don't care about that computer, otherwise I would upgrade the stock PSU. Doing this can end up damaging things.

Things just get smaller and faster and use less power. I recently completed a new build using an older motherboard (Core2Duo 2.4 E6600) and the GT640.. At 2560x1600 resolution, graphics compare well to my other 8800GTX system! The Unigine Heaven benchmark runs mostly smoothly with just some stuttering at that resolution.
