Better than expected for Vista PC, June 22, 2007
This review is from: EVGA e-GeForce 7600GT 256 MB PCIe Video Card (Personal Computers)
I tried this card after first starting out with a very similar card which also was built to the 7600GT "specs". Both had 256MB, but this card had the advantage with "DDR"3" video memory.
Basically, I wanted to find out if THIS card would improve Vista's graphics WEI performance rating, while DirectX 9 is still in widespread use. I already tried a higher priced GeForce 8500GT card that supports DX10, but the gaming graphics performance generally decreased quite significantly.
This card clearly is the winner, and currently the best of all worlds (given a more powerful graphics card is really not an option without upgrading my fairly high end, but relatively compact tower PC's power supply and motherboard - no thanks).
I had to ditch the driver that came with the card, however, and download the latest driver from the EVGA website. Thus, this card is NOT a Plug-n-Play Vista compatible graphics card right out of the box. To make it compatible a driver released by nVidia (Version 158.24) must be downloiaded and installed on a Vista PC.
On a Vista PC, be sure to view the Vista WEI ratings for "System" in the Control Panel (or Performance Information and Tools). Do this both before and after the installation of any hardware upgrade and you will be able to use the system itself to help you evaluate the difference in performance.
BTW< the installation of a "better" graphics card will not improve your PC's overall WEI rating, but the subcategory 3D Aero, Business and Gaming graphics performance should be observed for change.
In my case I was already at a 5.9 for the 3D Aero performance, but changed from 5.4 to 5.5 for the Business/Gaming graphics performance. Not a BIG improvement, but still enough to increase a typical high resolution graphics applications video display image in FPS by aprroximate +2%.
In conclusion, this card gets FOUR stars only because it is not PnP Vista compatible. Some of the other "freebie" utilities and applications that come on the CD-ROM installation disc are not Vista compatible either.
It has a VGA+DVI set of video output connectors, plus a S-video output with a dongle for most commonly used inputs to a TV. I would have preferred dual DVIs, as usually found on higher priced cards. The EVGA "554" version of the product has dual DVIs and actually is an even faster performing "7600G" graphics card, but probably needs to have a beefier system power supply of 400W or greater. This model can get by with a minimum 300W system supply if it has at least 18A on the +12V output.
If good video performance is where you want your hard earned PC upgrade dollars to go, especially for more satisfying gaming applications, this is a worthy product. Just be aware, for do-it-yourselfers, you need to be fairly savvy on video cards and how to install them to work properly on a Vista PC.

Excellent card! Requires +12V @ 18A power from PS!, June 2, 2007
This review is from: EVGA e-GeForce 7600GT 256 MB PCIe Video Card (Personal Computers)
I coupled this card with an MSI P6N SLI Platinum Motherboard and it works flawlessly. I also have it hooked up to a 19" Viewsonic LCD via DVI cable. Running the LCD at native resolution and have had no problems with any graphics or games thus far.
I just noticed that the fan on this card is the loudest one in my case. It's louder than my two Cooler Master case fans (120mm and 80mm) and the Cooler Master RR-LCH-P9E1 92mm UFO CPU fan. In fact, without the video card fan my PC is nearly silent in my home office setting. With this video card installed, I can hear noticeable fan noise. Not horrible, just noticeable. So, if you are building an HTPC, I would suggest getting a fanless card.
Throws a bit of heat out of the top of the card (where the fan exhaust port for the card is). More heat than my EVGA 256-A8-N313-LX GeForce FX5500 256MB AGP card. So, if you have a case that doesn't have a grill or screen on the side of the case (where the PCI cards go) then you may want to make sure that you have adequate fans / ventilation to get rid of the added heat to your case.
There is no PCI 6-pin connector on this card, so you end up utilizing the mobo power.
*****You must make sure that your power supply puts out +12V @ 18A, for this is the minimum power requirement for this card. Anything below that may not work or show instability.
Great card; I highly recommend it.

Great Mid-level Card, June 6, 2007
This review is from: EVGA e-GeForce 7600GT 256 MB PCIe Video Card (Personal Computers)
I wanted to upgrade my graphics card to be able to play some of the new high performance games without the high performance price that you usually need. I immediately saw a difference in my games, especially in Company of Heroes. I also upgraded to 2 MB of memory and the games run flawlessly on the highest settings. Highly Recommended!
