4.0 out of 5 stars It was the best, January 17, 2008
This review is from: EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB PCIe Video Card (Personal Computers)
I would give this card 5 out of 5 last year. In this price range which I paid around $330, this card has the best performance/dollar ratio. However, recent release 8800GT took away the spotlight. Below is the summary.

8800GT 512mb is no doubt faster than 8800GTS 640mb. I hate to say this since I love my GTS. The fact is simply because GT has higher core/shader clocks & number of shaders.

8800GT is marked cheaper than GTS lines which makes it the best performance/buck ratio winner.

Finally, if you're wondering how GTS 640mb handles Crysis and some hardware consuming games, the answer is it can easily cruise through COD4, Bioshock with high setting but not Crysis. You need SLI 8800GTX to do so.

Conclusion:

This is an amazing card with powerful capacity to handle all the games on today's shelf except Crysis. (It can still give you excellent experience if you know how to adjust settings.)
The card by itself is 5 starts. Put it next to 8800GT makes it 4 starts.

Bought this card to replace my GeForce4 video card. I must say that this card handles all the latest demo very well at full settings. I played Bioshock, Quake wars and Medal of Honor - Airborne (Please note that my processor is the Core2 Quad Q6600 and that the game play depends on your processor too). All the games ran smoothly at full settings. If you do not want to spend too much for your video card, then this is a good card to go for.

Make sure that you have a 16X PCIe slot and a good processor (at least above 3.2Ghz is recommended), else your processor will be the bottleneck.

Other thoughts: I have 2 LCD monitors. Well when my computer boots up only the primary display comes on and the secondary one will remain in sleep mode till the OS starts up. None of my older cards had that behavior. But it is nothing to worry about.

The fan does not run at 100% by default and is very quite. You need to install another utility if you need to increase the fan speed. But as you increase the fan speed, the noise increases too.

It's exactly as described. I've had no issues with it. I was just a bit misled, I hoped putting this in SLI would enable me to play games on 3 screens, unfortunately that's not the case. But overall it's a great product.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Monster games hard!, March 18, 2008
This review is from: EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB PCIe Video Card (Personal Computers)
I had a EVGA 8600 GTS and decided to upgrade to this monster since I had and extra PCI slot on my Sony Vaio mid-tower case and want my PC to be my main gaming device. The install process was a breeze. I thought it would be difficult as the card takes two pci card slot spaces and i wasn't sure it would fit in my case. It only physically connects to the express 16 slot and the extra space does not connect. The card is not only fat due to the two slots but it was also extremely long. It barely fit my case but it was nice and snug with room for the extra power connector. I decided to test it out with COD4.

My 8600 was able to handle COD4 at near 3/4 settings but every once in a while lagged a bit. This card handles the highest settings with ease and there is absolutely no lag which I expected. What I didn't expect was how well It handled the highest resolution setting which took my gaming experience from anolog to gaming full HD! It made such a difference graphic wise! This card handles graphic intensive games with ease, without lock ups or lags. I suppose it's the large memory.

This card will not dissapoint performance wise. I expected no less from this card but I was surprised at the difference when set to high settings. The 8600 lagged but handled COD4 admirably. If you have the money, the space and you are an extreme gamer get this baby but if you are a budget gamer the 8600 GTS is surprisingly good and will do the job very well (at half the price too). Just don't compare the two cause you will never go back to 8600 after experiencing this card.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Deal For Great Vid Card!, February 23, 2008

This card is a steal for the price! Althought its a tad less powerful than its brother (8800 GT), Im still able to crank all my games to the max! Oblivion looks absolutely beautiful!
The card does pump out some fan noise but you should expect it with a fan that is big enough to take up another slot! Yes, do be aware that this will require some space because it is a fairly large card.
I had no problems installing the card and with a new power 600watt power supply it only took an hour to install and hook everything up. Make sure you have the extra power connection for this card because it is hungry for power!
This is a must have if you are looking for great power withen a certain budget.

Nvidia 8800 Graphics Cards are the way to go. The GTS w/640 MB is one card that pumped new life into my games, you will see things that you never knew were there. You can't never go wrong upgrading your Graphics, and the EVGA 8800 GTS 640 MB PCI card is priced right and runs great. Get it before they are all gone.

I was going to go with the 8800gtx, but after reading about it at tomshardware i could see my system would be bottlenecked at the cpu. So I got the evga 8800 gts because of the trade in warranty. I had a xfx 7800 gtx before and was unable to play MOH Airbourne at high settings plus it just plan was jerky playing. This thing smoothed it right out.

I have got very good performance out of this card, even I have an old cpu install I got to run incredible games on my card, my favority Dirt, witch I could run without this Card since that game require shader 3 or 4 that this card is capable. I tested windows vista and got 5.9 out 6 in the performance test for video card. So is good!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Card with drawbacks, December 17, 2007

This review is from: EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB PCIe Video Card (Personal Computers)
Great performing card. With two cards: Runs everything with the exception of Crysis on highest possible settings. Crysis can be put on high but not very high if you want a decent frame rate. Card runs extremely hot, need good airflow. Price is outragous compared to the newer cards that perform faster and are a lot cheaper.

BUY PCIe 2.0 -- Their cheaper and perform better!
