Editorial Reviews

Review

Placing young readers smack-dab at the center of the action-and in control of the plot twists, the Choose Your Own Adventure series found an eager audience when Bantam launched the first of these paperbacks back in 1979. Between that year and 1998, that company released more than 180 books in the series, which reached an in-print tally of more than 250 million copies and were published in 38 languages. Now Chooseco, a publisher based in a Vermont farmhouse, is giving this generation's middle-graders the chance to choose their own adventures, as it reissues the series in updated editions. --Publisher's Weekly Children's Bookshelf --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

More About the Author

R.A. Montgomery is an avid adventurer, first and foremost. Whether in the mountains, or on the sea, or in explorations of the mind, he has found adventure in every aspect of his life. Teaching school, working in the administration of a top university, hiking in the Himalayas, or working in the Peace Corps in Africa, Montgomery has taken making choices seriously. Montgomery says, "There is never a day in which you are not confronted with choice. Some seemingly small choices can determine the path of the rest of your life. CYOA gave me a vehicle for examining all the impacts of choice."

He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1936. One of his first memories is sitting in his high chair and being frightened of Jell-O, which he thought was alive. He attended Hopkins Grammar School, the oldest private school in the country (founded in 1660), and Williston Academy. He got his college degree from Williams in 1958, and did graduate school at Yale and NYU.

Choose Your Own Adventure® books reflect his diverse interests and values. Montgomery states, "More than anything else, everyone should have the freedom to express themselves. Second to that, everyone should take risks and be willing to fail. Picking yourself up off the mat is the central business of life."

Today R.A. Montgomery lives in north central Vermont, where he is CEO of the small publishing house that has re-introduced the CYOA series. He travels frequently to Asia and Europe. Although his technical climbing days are kaput.

5.0 out of 5 stars War With The Evil Power Master, February 20, 2001

I really like this book because there's lots of fighting and action. I like that one robot--I forget his name. Space battles are really exciting. Especially the ones in this book. I really really enjoyed this book!

The only reason I would recommend getting this book is to fill the gap in your Choose your own adventure collection. R.A. Montgomery is real notorious on vagueness when it comes to his storytelling. He'll be real in depth with the plot on one hand and then fast forward with generalizations on the other. I also don't understand why he keeps recycling names of planets and galaxies from his other works like 'Space and Beyond'. I was able to beat the book on my first read. All I really had to do was not be reckless and make 'safe bet' decisions, more specifically: always consult with congress. In the end, it seemed that destroying the 'Power Master's' fleet of minions and breaking through his forcefield was a piece of cake in all of a half a page. I suppose it's all just campy, innocent, 80's sci-fi complete with futuristic 'printouts' of data.
