2.0 out of 5 stars Eh... not so good.
I only give two stars as the book was poorly written and the editing terrible. To add to that, the author never really address recording EVP/ITC. When I went to investigate the website listed in the book, that wasn't working and looks to be no longer up. There are much better books on EVP/ITC available. Check out Tom & Lisa Butler's work, Mark Macy, or better yet, Sarah...

Finally it is here.
A book on Electronic Voice Phenomena that is by a scientist who describes his research and results.
This one of the few replicable forms of paranormal phenomena that is an anathema to the philosophically constrained, ie, Skeptics.
Sadly, even sections of the spiritualist movement are aggressive to this type of research because the results do not always fit into their own neat little world bubble.
Skeptics will avoid this book, and manage to "know there is nothing to it" without examining the results.Of course.
Alec has shown how that the devices he has created , have
managed to achieve some amazing results.
1/The evp is not stray radio pickup
2/It is not white noise that is misconstrued as words.
3/Achieved results in a faraday cage.
If you want to read about cutting edge research, by a real scientist, that has never been explained away, then this is the book for you.
Read it and it may change your world view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, the best book on the subject, March 6, 2005
This review is from: EVP and New Dimensions (Paperback)
An intelligent, serious work about a very important field of research (perhaps the most important). The science is sound, the theory valid, and the writing accessible.

I could not make it through the first chapter of this book. The writing and editing are horrible. It reads like a collection of random thoughts, anecdotes, and lists of details wandering around aimlessly in search of a paragraph.
I flipped through it and gleaned a few pieces of information that were interesting, but to sit and read it from start to finish was impossible.

Topics like EVP attract a lot of pseudo-science and charlatans. That fact makes MacRae's book all the more appealing!

EVP and New Dimensions covers what is known of EVP and also gives a nice historical account of the field. MacRae's background as an engineer and audio specialist, coupled with his research in EVP since the 1970s, gives him a unique voice on the topic. He repudiates past rumors and fraudulent claims, giving EVP real scientific credibility. He also lays out possible theories for the phenomena, bringing a very fascinating bit of theoretical physics into the mix!

An important feature of this book is that it is written for the layman. While he has written papers for the scientific community, this book is meant to be accessible. The style is very conversational, and thus VERY readable! I do agree with previous reviewers that it could benefit from a skillful editor - MacRae occasionally wonders off topic and there are some grammatical/spelling errors. However, that's a minor gripe given the scope of the information.

His lab's website seems to be down which is a shame because he references its research material. Also, this book's companion CD, The Sounds of EVP, can be bought and downloaded from Lulu's website.

All in all, a charming and informative read with forgivable flaws. If you're interested in science of EVP and don't want hocus-pocus, this is a good book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Author in Serious Need of an Editor, January 16, 2008
By
This review is from: EVP and New Dimensions (Paperback)
This was a rough one to get through. I was expecting a thorough explanation of how EVPs were gathered, analyzed, and ideas as to what they may be. I got some of that, in various pieces, but I really wish an editor was involved to take out some of the silly quips the author made throughout the book.

All in all, not the quality I was hoping for.

as a paranormal researcher i found this book to be abig help. while at a hau nted location we run up to 6 recorders in several locations, analog with white noise, digital with enhanced mic, spion listing device. the ash u.k. cd is good for early evp sounds as well. in the paranormal research i found evps, in general to be hard to debunk.if you run a negative ion projecter in a non humid place, dry air is the best for results, i find very good evp, emf, film and infrared video recorders. this book gives a good history and talks about noise ratio e,t.c. also pink noise and other forms of ambient sound. daniel darrow new england apparition
